It does not look like a connector to me either.
Grounding is never a bad thing.
It looks like a piece of metal foil that might be extending to the other side of the caddy to provide grounding or emi shielding.
 
its to apply pressure to the caddy so it doesnt flop around, maybe. whats the model of the laptop?
