Hello there,

I plan on building a nested setup using VMware Workstation with ESxi 6.5 on a Windows 7 system that I will also use for my day-to-day needs (programming, gaming, multimedia etc). The setup will be used for labbing Cisco Unified Communications and also for studying for the VCP and RHCE when I will have the time.

CPU: Xeon E5-2620 6 cores
RAM: 128GB DDR4 1600MHz Quad
MB: ASRock X99 Extreme4/3.1 OR ASRock X99 TAICHI
RAM: Samsung 2400MHz 128GB M39A2G40EB1 - CRC0Q
Storage: Samsung Enterprise 450GB SSD + Samsung 850 Pro SSD for the OS
Case: Fractal Design Define R5
PSU: Seasonic M12I-620 EVO Edition Bronze
GPU: GTX960

I already have the CPU and it forces me to go for the Extreme4/3.1 MB as it can support 1600Mhz RAM but that motherboard is getting rarer to find so I am considering purchasing the TAICHI. As far as I remember, it would be ok if the RAM has a higher frequency than what the the CPU supports, as it would be clocked to 1600MHz by the Xeon, is this correct? And if I could not find the Extreme4/3.1 anymore, the TAICHI would also go along with the Xeon as far as I know.

Does anyone have any experience with a similar setup? I want to make sure that I chose the proper components and avoid any incompatibilities.

I plan on running around 12 VMs with this setup for my CCNP Collaboration. Would this be enough? I will be upgrading the CPU down the line if more power is needed.

Should you need any other information from my side, please feel free to ask.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Cheers!
