just checked rifts for sale on reddit/[H]/ebay - just a week ago everyone was asking for $1000+

now i'm seeing them top out around $800 and a lot going for just the $600 the unit originally sold for in the first place - did the last round of bad press (revive) hit that hard?

Quite possibly the units are just now readily available through retail channels and the bulk of "early adopters" willing to pay stupidly high prices already have their units in-hand.

they aren't - both the vive and cv1 are a few months behind on shipping ... and the only brick and mortar store where you can get a cv1 is best buy, they usually get 1-3 in stock which are rapidly snapped up...

Very good point, I stand corrected.

I'm going with the fact that the people with deep pockets already bought them at the high prices as soon as they could. Since it has been out for a couple months and more and more people are getting them, they do finally seem to be going for $800 or less. I haven't seen any go for in the $600 range yet, but I have started seeing a good few with a buy it now price of $800.

I'm guessing that it could be partially due to all the negative attention Oculus and Facebook have been getting since launch, but if I really had to guess I'd say that it's likely due to how well the Vive is doing. Last I saw, HTC is now shipping units as soon as orders are coming in. They're not having the shortages that they were initially after launch... not sure if Oculus had gotten this straightened out yet or not.

So with that said, why in the world would anyone pay 800-1K for a rift when they can get a much more feature rich device for the same price or less? Granted, the Vive hasn't gotten the mainstream attention that the Rift has, so many people don't even know it exists, but I don't think they're selling these devices to the mainstream

on paper the vive appears to be significantly better, mainly with the inclusion of room scale vr and the packed in controllers
but having used them both the rift is lighter and fits better, about 20 minutes in i was pretty much lost in ED enjoying myself, with the vive i kept adjusting and i always felt the unit sitting there despite how engrossing the content was

before i'd tried them i was 100% team vive, now that has shifted to getting a rift (i'm waiting for the 1070 to drop) - so i get the oculus walled garden stuff but also whatever else is available via steam (just gotta wait on the touch controllers...)

The Rift just gave me nausea, too much light bleed and the focus was bad. I don't know if I just had a crappy demo assistant at best buy but she couldn't get the rift to look right for me. The Galaxy Gear headset felt better quality than the Rift which honestly felt like cardboard.

I haven't tried the rift, but if it's anything like the vive, getting it positioned on your face properly is crucial to getting a good experience. From what I've read/heard from others is that they're pretty close... with the rift having a slightly larger 'sweet spot'. I'm guessing you may have just not of had it on correctly (or not adjusted properly). Also, the closer the lenses are to your face, the larger the sweet spot!

I modified one of my Vive pads (cut it down a bit) and it's amazing what it did for image clarity

Im using mine without the foam.

I cut a layer of fine fabric and put it in the velcro.

The best sweet spot ever.

Doesn't it get uncomfortable after a little while?

Even my cut down pad starts to annoy me after an hour or so. I was actually thinking about removing all of the foam from the plastic strip and applying new foam from a hobby store but haven't had the ambition yet lol But I imagine some denser foam would work great. It could be a lot thinner while still providing some good padding.

The Vive is starting to get cought up. There's some people ordering recently that have gotten shipment notices within a week. The scalper prices on Vive are going to drop precipitously in the next week or so, I'm guessing.

I ordered my vive a month after they had the pre-order and got it like a month later, I'd say they are way more on their game. People just realized how awesome hand controller are

I just keep hoping that supply is quickly sold out for quite some time, this will ensure that VR isn't seen as a fad and will flourish!
