YouTube and Reddit Banning Firearms Related Content

Both YouTube and Reddit have decided to jump into the politically charged waters of gun control. YouTube is (WARNING auto play video) banning videos that relate to the selling of guns and some accessories like bump stocks as well as videos that show how to assemble firearms. Reddit has lumped gun sales subreddits into the same class as drugs, sex work, and stolen goods and have banned those boards. All I can do about this is shake my head. Why do these entities go out of their way to alienate a large portion of their user-base for political reasons? Thanks cageymaru.


YouTube will ban videos that promote or link to websites selling firearms and accessories, including bump stocks, which allow a semi-automatic rifle to fire faster. Additionally, YouTube said it will prohibit videos with instructions on how to assemble firearms.

The San Francisco-based site, which is structured around user-created boards termed “subreddits,” updated their community guidelines to bar the use of Reddit “to solicit or facilitate any transaction or gift” that involves a host of items ranging from firearms to drugs, sex work, and stolen goods.

I don't see how reddit did anything wrong. YT on the other hand, is really getting worse with every move they make.
 
Because anyone who doesn't tow the line with mainstream media's narrative is labeled a Trump-loving, sexist, bigoted, mysogynist and is threatened with boycotts, protests, and tons of bad press. The 2nd Amendment is the one under attack, but it's the 1st Amendment which is in even worse peril here in the US.
 
Soon they will toss out the 2nd amendment and take our guns away. Next will be freedom of speech and Martial law will be the norm. Stupid liberals and snow flakes are winning.
 
Reddit also grouped Airsoft into actual firearms as well. Completely removed the subreddit for buying used airsoft guns and so far the other subreddits for Airsoft are still up. Guess they don't like people selling anything that looks scary now.

Please explain how this is a First Amendment issue.

I have used youtube for teardown and assembly videos for each new firearm I have purchased. And often I like to watch videos about it before making a purchase. Used youtube to help assemble my ar15 from parts.

It is within their right to handle their business however they see fit. This will be a revenue dip for them, I will now be using full30 much more.

FYI: When I typed "youtube" into google, the top result was "youtube alternative".

So how far will people protest? Ditching the phones yet? :p
 
I'm guessing they are worried about liability.

Because, if they are trying to appease people politically, they have nothing to gain from this move. Thrill some in favor of gun control, but piss off some on the other side of the issue.

There are laws on the books protecting gun manufacturers from liability lawsuits, but no such laws when it comes to websites.

Picture this. Some kid buys an AR-15 kit from 80% Arms, and follows the video on youtube to properly assemble it into good working order. The kid can do this without ID or background checks because these are technically not working firearms.

Now said kid proceeds to shoot up his school. After the shooting police search his computer or phone and in his browsing history find visits to assembly instructions on youtube.

Who do you think the parents of victims are going to sue? The little 80% Arms company, or the multi billion dollar internet giant?

Looks like classic CYA to me.

If it was CYA they wouldn't have videos of 14 year old girls showing how to shave their vagina with millions of views that could be construed as child porn. They've been systematically demonetizing, banning, and removing any content that isn't left of Marx for months now and guns are just the next step.

Is it something the government is forcing people/companies to do, or is it a choice being made by said people/companies?
 
all these companies bending over backwards to appease snowflakes, what are they going to do when the see these changes dont stop bad people from doing bad things, and theyve lost/pissed off their customers at the same time?

next theyll be banning car videos the next time someone gets killed by one

Lots of stuff exists on youtube that you probably wouldn't expect. If it fits their agenda they leave it, if it doesn't it goes even if its completely innocent. They've been highly political since Google bought them out (the same way that google very carefully grooms and censors your search results on many topics).
 
Came here for the crybabies whining about the first amendment when it doesn't apply here, didn't leave disappointed.

Feel free to close your reddit and youtube accounts and start your own forums and video hosting sites.

I do. The issue is that as more and more entities decide what can or cannot be discussed, we run out of places to talk about certain things. This is suppression and, even if the government isn't enacting a law forbidding the speech itself, they're still enabling it. Pushing a topic underground doesn't solve anything.

But that doesnt make it a first amendment issue.
 
Both are their platforms, and they can do what they want. It does seem cowardly, though, and will make both platforms less useful.

This isn't a first amendment issue. The government is not censoring speech. The first amendment has to be the most misunderstood law on the books.

Straw man much? Firearms and motor vehicles aren't remotely similar. I'm not going to wade into whether reddit and youtube are making the smartest business move, but it's one they have every right to make. Furthermore, as Zarathustra pointed out, this is likely to protect against law suits.
