AMD senior R&D engineer Dihara Wijetunga revealed he is working on a fully path traced version of RTCW. It is still very early in development, but he posted a Twitter thread showing screenshots of his progress. It is based on the source port iortcw with a custome DirectX 12 backend.

This is awesome. Have you heard any updates? Also thread necro.

I was just playing through Quake II RTX.

Last thing he said was it's a "long way off." I'm sure he doesn't have a whole lot of time to work on it between his job hours.

Why does the original look better in every screenshot?
It's still early in development. Looks like the torches are not emitting light in most screenshots, light accumulation obviously need work, and surface properties need to be added and/or tweaked.

I don't think it does.

Even so, I don't understand why anyone wastes time and effort on this stuff. After you've overhauled the lighting, the game still has primitive assets rendered two decades ago that still look like they were rendered two decades ago.
Right, it's like the same thing as seeing old ass games like quake with high res texture mods. Gigabytes of textures slapped onto very primitive low poly models. It seems out of place to me, and just doesn't look right.

It’s because the old games have actual fun gameplay and not just engagement-engineered dopamine loops. Also it’s a fun technical challenge for the right person.
