Windows 10 vs. Ubuntu Linux Gaming Performance With NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060/1080

When I grew up plenty of people had Amiga's but they were primarily A500's and a lucky few with A1200's, all hooked up to TV's, not a monitor user in sight :p

A bit off topic, but I've got a pristine A500 and A1200 both expanded with accelerators, Indivisions and CF HDD's running WB 3.1 and Scalos desktop - Awesome machines!

I still wish I had my Amiga 500 with the 68030 upgrade and 4MB of ram.
Lol, that is what I did to mine, in addition to a flicker fixer (don't recall the actual name) that fit inside, I think it plugged into the Denise chip. It was one crowded A500. Then on the side expansion was a Supra hard drive enclosure with 2 more megs of fast ram which was a SCSI interface which I had another hard drive hooked up also externally. Talking about learning SFF, gaming rig, tweaking at an earlier age - the Amiga 500 was it.

Also I had an A1200, 6830 as well, 16mb of ram. Another fun machine. By then OS2 was out and the move to the PC started.

Both my Amiga's run overclocked 68030's @ 40Mhz with 128mb of fast ram, good fun. My favourite though is my pristine C64 breadbin with 1541 Ultimate II+ and real matching 1541 FDD in equally pristine condition.

You could say I'm a bit of a Commodore nut.

Not hugely irrelevant when it comes to gaming and the reason why I don't run Linux as a desktop host is because I can't without losing access to tons of software of which games are only a part.

Not really, you always make it out to be a vastly bigger issue than it really is. As stated, not surprising as you only know Windows so it's not your fault.

You're entitled to your opinion, that doesn't make it right, but I'm simply through reasoning with you Heatlesssun. I run a GTX 670FTW with dual 1080p monitors and I haven't experienced a performance issue at 1080p yet, frame rates are always above 60fps.

It's not an opinion that the GTX 1080 is targeted for more than 1080p gaming. It's a waste of money for that purpose. Any serious and professional review of a part like the 1080 or better isn't going to waste its time with only 1080p benchmarks.

Problem is, you are assuming he only knows Windows. Can you quote me anywhere that he said he only knows Windows?

What does application support have to do with knowing Linux or Windows? This has nothing to do with knowing any particular OS beyond what applications are supported and that's easy enough to research, I've probably done a LOT more of that kind of research than you have because I understand that this is a big issue and has been for the nearly 20 years this debate has been going on.

And these particular benchmarks came from a Linux expert, that's pretty much saying "Linux gaming, even when there are native games, not so great on the performance side." If a PC gamer who was considering moving to Linux came across that review, there's little in this particular review that would be encouraging.

This review used a 1060 and a 1080. While a 1060 is an ok fit for 1080p there's no reason to buy a GTX 1080 for 1080p gaming, that's beyond overkill and a waste of money.

I think a GTX 1080 would hold value for those at 1080P with a 144 hz monitor. Pushing 100+ FPS in some games can require a lot of horsepower especially in linux.

That's a reasonable point especially for a competitive online player. But if one is trying to maximize gaming framerates they wouldn't use Linux for that purpose anyway. And 1080p still isn't the target audience for this type of card. I'm pretty sure that most people with this type of GPU or GPUs or better is using higher resolutions and/or VR more.

I'd agree with that. I know I don't support Linux for pure performance reasons but because it conforms with my beliefs and gives me the freedoms I desire. Hopefully as more games come onto Linux the performance gets better.

I'd also agree that as a Linux gamer using 144 hz i'm a niche of a niche of a niche.

Who's using a 1080 @ 1080p? The review's specifically using a 1060/1080 @ 4k. Deus Ex is run @ 1080p as it's obviously a poor port, but the testing is specifically biased towards 4k performance figures.

I use a soon to be updated GTX 670 FTW @ 1080p and don't have a single issue with performance.

I've made my statements, not interested in discussing them any further and creating yet another Windows vs Linux thread.

The tests for Metro Last Light and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided were in 1080P, the rest were 4K. Overall 6 games in 4K vs 2 in 1080P.
