What is apple doing with its wearables?

I saw September 14 apple event, its been 7 years and apple hasn't done much with the design language of apple watch.
I am not here to criticize what apple is doing, I am here to express my opinion.

No doubt Apple watches are the #1 selling smartwatches in the world or perhaps #1 wristwatch in the world.
But let the wrist watch be a wrist watch, don't make it a micro iPhone. With series 7 they increased the size of display, keeping the same design language since the first generation.
I am not saying what they did was wrong, but what difference will a slightly larger display matter? No one will use smartwatch for web browsing, gaming or watching video, in fact i find texting in the watch odd.
For all those purposes we have the smartphone.

What they could have done was, something what Samsung did with its Galaxy Gear classic, rotating bezel, that watch looks more sturdy .
I own a golden Series 6, with stainless steel chassis. I love my watch. But what I feel is Samsung did a much better job with this Galaxy Gear classic

Apple has the money, they have the creative artists, they can think of implementing things like battery charged by solar light or they can give add hybrid functionality.
So what will the next generation apple watch will be? A slightly bigger display? A watch with a camera? We don't need all that in a wrist watch. Let the wrist watch be a wrist watch.

I had the first Apple Watch (not series 1, the first-generation original watch) and then upgraded to the series 4 which I still wear today.
As for size, improving the size of the display is great if it can be done while increasing the size of the watch casing itself as little as possible (ideally, none). I have a 40mm series 4, and my wrists are fairly small. So maximizing screen size to fit a currently existing case size would make a lot of sense to me. It just makes things easier to read and view from a glance.
Honestly, I don't do much with my watch except check weather, read notifications (I almost always reply from my phone), and use the activity trackers. If you don't have AirPods or other compatible wireless headphones, I think it really limits what you can do with the watch.
I haven't been impressed by any of the newer series watches since the 4, and that's why I've stuck with it. I love my watch and it does everything I need it to, so I'm content. I suppose it really comes down to personal use and preference, what's important and what's not.
I will say, I hope the day comes that Apple gives us a truly round watch - I always have liked the real round dials compared to the quasi-square shape. The 4 helped with this somewhat - for me, the original through series 3 just looked way too much like a cube.

I grew up with Databanks and Calculator watches so I kinda like the squarish shape.

I never had complain with Square Shape. But Apple can add variety. Example Nike version give square shape because it s sports watch. But to the classic models give more of an elegant look that a person can wear in functions, meetings and parties, more like a status symbol.

Before apple watch, the last time I had a wrist watch was Casio tough solar. It was a sports watch, tough and sturdy, I liked it but never looked good on my wrist, for formal events, functions, weddings and so on. When that watch reached its end of the life. I decided that I will never buy a wrist watch, until its technology evolves to add smart features.

For 9 years I was without a smartwatch, in 2019 I bought Apple Watch series 2, an aluminium model, black color I liked it, though but never felt like a status symbol. This golden stainless series 6 with Milanese loop does looks like lavish. But my suggestion is apple should add variety and shapes to its wearable. Nike edition for sports and health use. Classic model to give a lavish lush look on your wrist, without compromising health features, but not full sports features.

the only problem I see with having 2 shapes is app compatibility, you will either have to make 2 versions of the app or create an app that doesn't use the corners of the display so nothing is cut-off when displayed on a round screen.

You have a good point. From my understanding, iOS and WatchOS apps uses vector graphic. So i hope apple a trillion $ company, with it's developer team can figure out a way for the apps to change shape depending on the device. Actually I've seen that Watch OS app, doesn't have a shape or border. Example heart rate monitor app, the ECG app, stop watch app doesn't have any shape or a defined border

I only use it for the health features and fitness tracking. I wear it at night for tracking blood O2. During the day I just wear my Rolex.

For all the wrong reasons, apple products are considered status symbol. So i thought when they created their wearable this must be in their mind too, besides health and fitness. Killing classic timepieces.

You can call me crazy. But we don't live in 1970s, technology changes the way we live.
1. Smartphones are responsible for the death of alarm clock.
2. With smartwatches and Apple leading the way, the age of classic time peace wearable is over, unless someone wants to decorate his museum . Those regal Swiss names costing upto 100K $ will become a thing of past, they have to transform into a smartwatch.

The only thing that i dislike about the smartwatches is, their life expectancy, these gadgets should be build to last for decades, if not one whole life
