Current Position: Network Engineering Team Lead
Hours: 9-5, though Im just collecting a pay check right now....2 more weeks left
Lunch - 1.5-2 hrs normally
Compensation: very good salary, 401k 100% matched up to 6%, profit sharing + 10% bonus.

Future Position: Network consulting engineer
Hours - not sure, 8-3 maybe?
Lunch - Not long
Compensation: mediocre salary, 401k 100% matched up to 6%, stock options, bonuses and raises based on performance

You may ask why im taking a pay cut, career decision basically. This will open up more doors for me, plus they pay for everything education related I could ever want(including masters and PhD).

Also, Im curious as to where these salary ranges that some of the people in this thread consider poor lie? Also, how old are most of you guys? I just turned 24.

Title: Campus Systems Administrator
'm 22 and will be able to retire at 35.
um..... wtf:rolleyes: no way. Simply put, by todays standards you cannot retire happily at age 65 without at least 1MIL... and thats 30 years from the date that you claim you're going to retire.....

Um, yes way partner. Besides, you misunderstand "retirement" from a government job.
Once I "retire" I get a pension which is the average of 3 years of my highest pay during my entire career.

Then, I am free to start another career while still getting a pension from the government.

Also, I didn't say I was going to sit on my ass and do nothing for the next 30 years. I meant I was retiring from THAT job.

Current Position: Computer/Technology Support
Hours: 8-4 during school year, 9-3 during summer, occasional after-hours
Lunch: 1hr but infrequent
Compensation: acceptable salary, great benefits, awesome time-off

First things first, I fully understand government retirement as I am a DoD contractor, so I hear about the [shit] pension they get all the time.(both plans)

Second, the context of your post leads one to believe that you are going to retire from working indefinitely, hence the reason I called BS. No worries though mate, sounds like a pretty sweet deal though. Your pension sounds much better than what the DoD guys get btw.

Title: Systems Administrator
Hours: 8 - 5
Lunch: allowed 1 hour. Most of the time I leave 10 minutes early. On Wed. the lunch club I hang with goes for 1.5 hr lunch.
Compensation: It is acceptable salary.

I could make more but I am nice and relaxed here. Jeans and a long sleeve demin shirt (to cover the tattoo). 152 hours vacation/yr. Only 9 minutes away from home. Company pays for medical, dental and long term disability.

Title: Networked Systems and Security Design and Analysis Contractor
Hours: Whatever I am awake during the length of a contract (Normally a couple of weeks to a month)
Lunch: Normally eat during meetings with the IT department of the company I'm working for at the time, or whenever I'm not building a system
Compensation: Negotiated per contract. Always a check upfront, another at completion of contract.

Currently I'm attending school to complete my degree in Networking Security and Robotics and Embedded systems. Im taking the NS degree so I can get the NSA Certificate in Information assurance. Will be nice to be able to put on my resume.

Title: IT Director
Hours: 7-5
Lunch: 1 or so at lunch except when management wants to go out for an extended happy hour
Compensation: good F'in money and paid benefits for me and the family

Title: IT Officer
Hours: 8:00-5:00, but people can call my cell from roughly 7:30am to 6:00pm
Lunch: 1 hour
Compensation: Salary, plus kick ass ESOP plan, and a good sized bonus.

I'm not required to answer my phone outside of my normal hours, but if I'm not busy I don't mind taking a support call or two from home. (Remote access for the win!) The hours are also pretty flexible and while I don't get overtime, I do collect additional vacation time for anything after hours.

Title: Campus Systems Administrator
Hours: 7:30AM to 4PM
Lunch: 30 minutes
Compensation: Hourly
Benefits: Paid spring break, christmas break, etc. 10% contrib to 403b with 100% employee match from day one. I'm 22 and will be able to retire at 35.

I work for a public school district so the hours change drastically during the summer when the kids leave. We usually work 60-70 hour weeks all summer to fix and do things that we can't do when school is in session. (Reimaging, rewire IDF's, inventory, etc) This last summer we opened 2 brand new schools and installed about 200 ceiling mounted projectors in about 5 different schools. I personally did 150 of those 200. The hours suck during the summer, but during the school year the job is cake.

Sounds very similar to what I do. Busy during the summer and cruise control during the school year. I just spent a lot of time over my Christmas break installing a new OES2 server with a 8 TB SAN and setup iFolder and NetStorage.

Title: Helpdesk Supervisor
Hours: 8:30-5:00
Real Hours: Normally 8:30-5:00, though once every 5 weeks I'm oncall for 24x7 for a week, plus whatever OT the boss can guilt my team and I into...
Lunch: 30 minutes to 1 hour
Compensation: Salary that stinks, $100 extra for the week I'm oncall.

I work for an airline and they pay absolute trash because they think the flight benefits make up for it, plus they feel they own you and think you should spend tons of extra time working.

As an aside, I think what most places expect for overtime is nothing short of idiotic. The job before this, I worked overtime once or twice a year. The place I'm at now wants us to work overtime as much as possible for no reason I can see.

Ditto for me.

The reason I have to work overtime is my "get it done yesterday" boss always drops something into your lap with barely any notice. I tend to like weekends... And am personally getting sick of all this overtime with no compensation (The stupid thing is they bitch when you come in 10 minutes late... nevermind you just worked 20 extra hours over the weekend!). We'll see what kind of increase I get after 1 year with this company (coming up shortly). If it isn't enough to deal with the junk I deal with, I leave.

I'm working for the CS department at my university, keeping the servers and classroom labs and faculty machines happy. They'll pay for grad school, too, which is definitely a plus.
