Walmart Teams with Oculus and STRIVR to Provide Interactive Training for Employees

Walmart has teamed with STRIVR and Oculus to provide over 45 interactive VR training modules for employees. Employees are put through 'What If' situations in virtual reality that are hard to replicate elsewhere. 70% of the Oculus Rift trained employees scored higher than employees trained with materials and techniques. 30% of Rift trained employees found the interactive training superior to conventional methods. Walmart is going to purchase 17,000 Oculus Go VR units to train its 1 million employees in 4,500 stores across the U.S..

"VR training provides a safe space for associates to experience situations that are nearly impossible to replicate," McKeel says. "The training is experiential, memorable, and fast. For example, associates in stores receiving our new Pickup Towers -- think vending machines for online orders -- used VR training to learn how to use it in about 10 minutes."

They probably put you behind a virtual cashier station as "The People Of Walmart" montages scroll by...its probably crisis training.....see if you lose your shit when the 500lb dominatrix ponies up to the checkout with 2 boxes of laxitives and a bottle of Scope....

What training? A fuckin monkey could do that job. I have NEVER been approached by an employee at Walmart that asked me if I was finding everything ok or if I needed help.

You probably got your money's worth. They're not paid anything, treated well, rewarded for good performance - none of that.

That's a corporate culture decision.

What a load of crap. This is a grift.

1. Company that is desperate for exposure and money goes to Wal Mart executive, who is probably old and out-of-touch but heard the term "VR" and thought it sounded cool.
2. Slick salesmen sells Wal Mart a multimillion dollar contract to use VR devices in training. Gives the dumb executive a cool demo that blows his mind.
3. Wal Mart executive issues company wide order to use these devices for "training" but makes no specific examples as to how or why it can benefit them.
4. Middle management shits their pants trying to figure out the best way to implement to make bossman happy. They fail.
5. Shit rolls downhill and now it falls to district and store managers to make use of them. Being that they work in the reality of the trenches, they see no viable use for them and only do the bare minimum to make their superiors happy.
6. A few headsets trickle down to stores, some are pilfered along the chain, a few get used and are broken, no actual training is performed on them. The whole thing is forgotten, the end.

I think it's great for education and in this case it's probably better than on-the-job training by a string of clueless dumb dumbs.

I'd be scared to approach you too

Wait.. You need training to tell people to go to the self checkout lane? Because I don't know about your Wal-mart.. but mine is BARE of employees.

There's lean - and there's simply under-staffed. I believe it's over the border into the latter these days.
