Yea that's the part that concerns me about their focus on streaming......12 hr work days, no thanks. You can't go on vacation because you are scared you will lose to many subs.....wow

I'm not sure why this is a problem. He's essentially a small business owner where he and his wife (that we know of) are the "employees", using Twitch and Youtube as a platform. If he was a physical store, him being online is essentially his operating hours. If he's closed, people will go to other stores.

When you are running a business, time is money. It's not just smart and prudent to know how much money you're losing by "being closed," frankly it's required if you want to make a living running your own business. You don't get a salary with regular deposits....you make what people pay you.

But it seems you get that $10M in your bank account (whatever's left after Uncle Sam and friends takes their half or more) and a sweet home and comfy retirement isn't enough. Now you have your sights set on a garage full of super cars and that infinity pool overlooking the ocean... and maybe on both coasts, and heck why not Australia too.

Some people don't take upkeep into the cost. 10m is plenty to live on if your smart.

Depends on what you consider a decent retirement. When you take in possible inflation, unstable economy, unstable society, you may need more money in the end. Especially if you want to live out the rest of your days in relative luxury as opposed to be stringy.

Also, particularly in this case, he has a limited window he can maximize his profits. If he chose to take some time off now, he may never get the same kind of opportunity again. This is likely why they haven't even taken a vacation in 8 years.

On 10mil i would have long since retired to a beach somewhere. I'm just not wired like that. I'm the top 15-20% of the US pay wise and I feel rich, but I lived in abject, like kids at school would recognize their hand me downs, poverty as a kid. I still get excited when I find a quarter so if I ever get around to saving a million dollars thats it I'm set for life.

Maybe its because Im an introvert but streaming still seems like work to me also. I'd rather do my job(new technologies engineer). I watch a stream here and there for technical advice but the amount sort of interaction and pandering they gotta do would feel like slavery to me.

No offense, because obviously I no idea what anyone in the thread earns (and not aimed at you in particular)... but in this thread we have people who will never earn $10M in their lifetimes talking about inflation and the need for Ninja to earn more money.

It's funny how that works. Having a family and kids can change that, but still if you're this guy and you've built this and it's your passion and purpose how could you stop? Agree in some ways, but don't think it is as black and white as you make it to be.

Its never as black and white as its seems that is why I agreed with his point.

And agree with yours as well.

Sometimes life just happens and you roll with the punches.

That's greed talking. There are much more important things then money. Greed will swallow you whole if you let it.

As the old saying goes, you've got to, "Make hay while the sun shines."
There is also a saying "You're a slave to work".
I guess i'm just saying I'm not going to kill myself and worry about how much I missed out on. If he was smart he would start to get his money working harder for him then he could start to enjoy his life outside of video games.
Maybe that the old soul inside me talking but if I made 10 million bucks in 1 year i'd definitely be looking to get that money to grow outside of me laboring for it.

Same argument often made about athletes vs. scholars, and can't remember the movie but there's one quote (probably butchered) that sums it up "When has a stadium ever filled up with people wanting to watch someone do a math problem?"

I know I am in the minority, but I'd rather watch a complex math problem be solved that could do some good in this world than watch someone with an IQ of 80 catch a ball.

Very interesting read:

It's also funny how the motivation changes.

I'm sitting here thinking if I'd made close to $10M last year then I'd be done.. forever. Anything from this point would be for the enjoyment of life.

But it seems you get that $10M in your bank account (whatever's left after Uncle Sam and friends takes their half or more) and a sweet home and comfy retirement isn't enough. Yeah the thing is, if you earn $10mil in a year and still have the will to do it, why not for a couple more years?
As someone mentioned ealier, this ain't gonna last. Might as well earn $30mil instead of $10mil and then call it quits.

Which is why I said “if I had made” and not “Ninja should”.

I’m thinking about what I do because I can’t put myself in his shoes. The whole people watching others play games thing is absurd to me, let alone paying for it.

Exactly. Ninja hit the jackpot with what he's doing now. There's no possible way to ensure it will last. So you ride that out until you either can't stand to any more or it all goes to shit, then you retire comfortably.

I am really not sure what your reply is referencing here? What does what other people make have to do with my comment at all? I mean this is the basic opening for any conversation with a retirement planner. What are your expectations for when you retire? What do you consider comfortable living? You don't need to make 10 million to understand how money works and look at the stock market and know you aren't going to see the same returns as 20 years ago.

Also it does not address the most important part of my comment in that they only have a limited window where they know they can make this much money. If they walked away now or slowed down, there is no guarantee they would ever be able to recoop. That is a serious consideration.

The point is that someone who banked $10M and handles his money right doesn't have to worry about inflation as a threat, even after taxes and such. Yes I understand how the world works, and when you have that much cash at that young age.. you really don't have to worry about anything at all unless you are stupid with your money. You made a point about unstable society and such. If that's going to tank someone that earned $10M at any point in their life then I guess the other 99.999999% of the world is just fucked.

I also said that the comment didn't really apply to you in particular, which might be why you are so confused? Regardless, I'm sure there's some very comfortable middle ground between blowing $10M on hookers and living a stingy life.

I agree, watching other people play is completely absurd. I never understood the people who follow PewDieDie. Frankie did have some interesting DayZ episodes, but I did not watch many of them. Watched it mostly because he was very good at making DayZ look scary.
I never heard of this Ninja guy until now. But hey, it's better to be on the $10mil receiving side than on the "$25/month watch some other guy playwhile getting rich" side ;)

My first though: All that money and you can't enjoy life? Fuck that. You live once. Go take that money and travel the world and open up another business that allows you to live life. Sometimes I look at people and scratch my head. If he made 10 millions tell your fans you are taking 6 months off to enjoy the world. Peace out. If they are not there who cares. go open up another business where you can enjoy life.

Second: He makes that much because all these kids are crazy about fotnite lol. Frickin every kid is high on fortnite, its pretty fucking nuts. So when it comes to games the kids now just sit there and watch. My nephews were crazy about it but lately they are less crazy. May be fortnite craze will die out. Seriously my nephew at one point wanted to do nothing but spend money on stupid shit on fortnite.

same here. First I heard of him. But I am sure alot of his scribers are kids in high school and middle school.

I also wanted to add some people like Ninja, but i like the youtubers who don't waste any screen with their faces like H2O Delirious and Ohmwrecker.
While i get this (and mostly agree), streamers who show themselves on average do way better. Especially in games that don't sell themselves at this point (LOL, Fortnite).

<grumpy old man time>

1.) There is something odd about a grown-ass adult spending so much time playing a game that mainly appeals to the 10 - 13 year old demographic.

2.) It is nuts that anyone wants to watch someone else play a video game online, rather than just play themselves.

3.) It is nuts that anyone is enough of an attention whore to want to share their gaming experience with others over a live stream.

4.) It is nuts that Youtube/Twitch/etc. are willing to share ad revenue with these clowns. Youtube was much better before they shared their ad revenue with anyone.

I wish everyone would just stop being attention whores and just enjoy their goddamned games for what they are.

</grumpy old man time>

IDK about 3. With the money people are making, I can't blame anyone for trying. I'm tempted to try...

I just like being able to watch the whole screen. I also refuse to watch women streamers who only have like a quarter of the screen designated to the game.

Nothing wrong with that if it’s a hot woman! Lol
