Well this is my first worklog and my first real mod other than the usual windows, blowholes, cathodes and LEDs. The idea for this mod came from the necessity to play my movies that I have “obtained” since I have moved my main rig out of the living room. I do have 2.4 GHz audio/video senders but I also have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone which interferes with the signal.

I’m really looking for feedback on this so please tell me what you think and be honest because I cannot get better if I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

The box itself is going to be cubelike with the dimensions of 12”w x 8”h x 12”d. It is going to be black with blue and another color LEDs, blue for the power and green, red, or white for the ide activity I haven’t quite decided yet. I want to put in a rolling mobo tray that locks into place with a spring clip. And this is going to be my first time at using BONDO.

Well first off here is an image of what I had planned to do.

Here we go….

This is what I got done tonight.

This is the metal bender that I will be using for this build. Luckily they are putting new siding on my appartment building so this build is gonna cost me next to nothing because I am just using extras from the skirting.

Aluminum sheeting is what I am going to be using for the case.

Since I haven't used a bender like this before I decided to do a test bend with a spare chunk of aluminum.

I have my first piece of metal marked and scored and ready to begin bending.

Here is the first piece all bent. It is the top and sides of the box.

Now I will skip ahead to the end of the bending because if you seen one bend you have seen them all. ;)

This is a mockup of all the casing.

and here is the mockup with the mobo tray out.

And the final work I got done today was the mounting of the mobo to the tray.

So what do you think so far?

Yeah i'm thinking about making the mobo try out of lexan, I was just going to add braces on the aluminum one but lexan will solve my drive mounting issues.

He could stiffen up that tray by putting a small fold along the edge, perpendicular to his main fold. It would require a small amount of cutting work in the main fold to allow for a strengthening fold, but it shouldn't be all that difficult.

Cool, I just started working on my HTPC case (check sig for link) too.

I would have got a cheap case and take that apart to get the I/O/PCI card backing/ motherboard tray and used that though. I need to get a cheap bender and some sheets. :)

Actually that is why I left 1cm around the edge to do just that. Great minds think alike.

Well i've decided to just go with plexi cause it is cheaper than lexan but the glass place is closed for the weekend. I'll try to get in there monday and maybe get some work done on it monday night.

Cool, but seems really flimsy...

By itself it is but when I put them both together into one complete shell it is quite sturdy. And it will be even more so when I get the plexi mobo tray done. But thanks for the worries tho.

Well I went to the glass shop yesterday and damn plexi here is $4.95 a sq/ft and to top it all off they couldn't cut yesterday cause only a woman was working and she was like 4ft tall and said that she couldn't lift a sheet to cut my 4 sq/ft i need so someone will cut it today for me.

would lowes/home depot have the stuff you need? it may be cheaper there. looks interesting otherwise though.
