The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt: Official Thread

there are probably contractual obligations. from the preorder page

I couldn't care less about their contractual obligations, anyone savvy enough to buy digitally online knows they can buy the game cheaper elsewhere, they are just cutting their noses off to spite their face because a sale they would have otherwise received from me or others is going to instead go to another digital retailer. The credit they offer to offset the price gouge is an insulting consolation.

I'm not convinced that the price gouge is 100% GOG's call. If the game is being published by Namco or someone else then the digital price hike is probably a condition of the agreement.

As far as I am aware, GOG is a subsidiary of CDProjekt....at the very least they are related businesses. I am sure that it is within GOG and CDProjekts power to negotiate the terms upon which they can sell their game on their own digital platform.

And even if they can't, as a consumer it really is not my problem, I was prepared to pay a reasonable pre-order price (despite my general rule of no pre-orders) to GOG so that CDProjekt received most of the proceeds of the sale even though I have no doubt that I could easily obtain it even cheaper than $53.99 USD from other sources.

Instead they have decided to gouge and as a result destroy a lot of goodwill and respect they used to garner from me. I'll still buy the game, just not from GOG or anywhere near their ludicrous asking price of $80 AUD.

The books are worth a read for game fans, btw. 'Sword of Destiny' hasn't been officially translated/published into english, but fan-translated copies are , hrm, available.

Sure they could, but then they couldn't sell their game anywhere else because all those other retailers would insist on price parity.

Now, I would welcome them to take that step, but I'm sure it'd be loss scenario overall, your "goodwill" notwithstanding.

If you want to direct your hate somewhere, I suggest you direct it at the big importers and retailers that somehow still have this 'online' business in an iron grip.

The same thing happened with TW2, it came across as not being CDProjekt's fault. Originally they released TW2 for the sae price globally on GOG, then they were told by the international publisher it had to be different depending on region, so they included regional pricing... but they left it so YOU could choose your region. This also affected the content of the game, because it was actually censored in Australia. After some disputes with the publisher they were forced to region lock it based on IP so that you couldn't just lie about your region to get it cheaper.

It's a shame they aren't making the same effort this time, but based on CDProjekt's history I'm not going to jump on them for it as it may have been something they couldn't avoid.

This is something you should be able to circumvent with Tor or a VPN, correct?
Eff having to buy an upcharged AND censored version.

You can't stop the signal, Mal.

It looks like steam is honoring the same discounts for W1 and 2 owners.

Nice. Gonna preorder later. I like all my games in one place.

I *think * Valve is eating the discount cost because it wouldn't make sense for CDPR to have discounted it on Steam while they're trying to launch GOG Galaxy and discount it there too.

valve does not set pricing for anything. they do review and suggest promotions, otherwise it is up to the publisher

.

Generally, me too, but I bought at gog before steam had theirs up. I wonder if I can register it there later.

That's been my belief too, but I wonder if there aren't exceptions. Is CD:project Red really that altruistic that they would offer the same preorder discount on a competing platform at a time they're trying to garner interest in their own (Galaxy), or did Valve offer to let them make it available for the same discount and Valve would eat the difference.

So I'm not sure why they didn't just leave it full price on Steam at least for now, and it seems like something happened behind the scenes. Not that I'm complaining of course.

An insulting consolatoin?

The majority of the major digital retailers, the LEGIT ones (not the cheap ass cd-key resellers you are probably talking about) do this.

Mainly because of contracts with brick and mortar stores in different countries and regional publishers.

Most places, like Steam and Origin, do not even OFFER to give yout hings because of it.

I don't understand why games that haven't been released go on sale... Hope this game actually looks like the trailer sick of companies showing amazing trailers and the game looks nothing like it when released..

Yes it is an insulting consolation because I and many others really are not interested in receiving credits to buy games I already own or played decades ago.

The majority of the major digital retailers, the LEGIT ones (not the cheap ass cd-key resellers you are probably talking about) do this.

The are also plenty of LEGIT ones that don't do this, apart from the fact that I can quite easily and LEGALLY import a physical copy at non-rip off prices. And as much as you and others will pillory the non-legit key sellers, the fact of the matter is that they are still competitors that plenty of people will buy keys from to avoid being ripped off.

Mainly because of contracts with brick and mortar stores in different countries and regional publishers.

Weak pathetic excuse considering the anemic and virtually non-existent libraries of PC games sold at most brick and mortar stores in my country.

Most places, like Steam and Origin, do not even OFFER to give yout hings because of it.

Haha, guess what....I can currently buy Witcher 3 on steam at non-rip off prices! Oh well, might as well do that. The irony.

Do it already, and quit your bitching. Seriously. wtf? You need our approval or something?

Don't like my posts then don't read or respond to them. Quit your bitching about bitching

Seriously. wtf? Have you never been on an internet forum before!?

Don't worry... I find pointless arguments over $5 to be useless anyway... you won't be grabbing any more of my attention ever again.

Aaawww, but my self esteem is so dependent on your attention and approval. How will I be able to continue without them?!

Oh well, maybe if I am no longer the focus of your attention you can instead work on improving your reading comprehension seeing as the argument is over $30, not $5.

I just don't understand why you're so angry about this. They're contractually obligated to sell new games at the MSRP of whatever region you're in or else B&M stores can sue them or stop carrying their items entirely. They're not intentionally trying to rip you off.

If you have a problem with that, take it up with your local retail stores, not GOG.

I do have a problem with that, and the way I deal with it is I give neither GOG or local retail stores the sale. Steam wins again. Not much more to say about the matter now.

sidenote, does anyone know if Baptism of Fire is ever going to be in hardcover English?

CDP's negotiating power would be severely hampered by the fact it's selling a full-priced AAA game with no DRM.

Exactly!
I still got to play TW2, and I am looking forward to buying TW3 for $7.50 as well. I really don't get why people insist on paying $50 for a game. It not like I can't afford it, but I have to work for my money and if I can save $40+ then why wouldn't I. Boggles my mind.

Because some people have been waiting since it was announced to be able to play it and want it on Day 1. Not that complicated of a concept.

The early part of the first Witcher literally throws every mechanic at you in the first few minutes so it's overwhelming. Even things like dodging, which barely does anything except look fancy and escape corners. They also fail to mention that you can toggle the stances by hitting the same button, which streamlines combat a LOT. Leveling up and spells? Yup, they throw the concepts at you but only barely touch on the details. I've given up on the Witcher 3-4 times and one day I finally promised myself I'd keep going...and I ended up marathoning the whole game in just a few days. It took 4 years to make me do it, but I'm glad I did. Once you finally make it to town, the game becomes pretty epic.

The guys at CDProjekt do many many things well, but pacing and introduction to game mechanics aren't among them.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought this.

why buy it through steam?

Every time there is an update you have to re-download he whole game :<?

Made that mistake with TW2, going with GoG for the third.

Gameplay footage looks ridiculous. I felt sad that they were standing in front of an XBOX logo :(

I don't get why the audience hardly clapped? Then they REALLY clapped for things like Battlefield Hardline, CoD, etc....

Lowest common denominator....the masses eat up those kind of games while more original titles get left in the dust.

Because its not really a mass market game from one of the big four (EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Bethesda). Ask any random idiot in Gamestop - or their employees for that matter - if they've ever heard of The Witcher, and you'll get a dead bulkhead stare.

Once the game comes out and its epic I think word will travel fast, even among CoD bros.

You'd think that with an audience that is in the industry itself would be a bit more clue-y (and respectful)

That new IGN gameplay looked great, the little details and things going on around the city.

I can't wait to see more, like the boat sailing, mounted combat, etc.
