Once again, not free. The game is still for sale, and you still have to pay for it. This is the game now. Just because you already paid for it does not mean it's free.

If you bought the game now you can still access the classic build as we all had. You just select it, and can ignore the 4.0 update.

I don't see many people saying the Witcher 3 RTX patch on PC is fine...most people seem to agree that it has major issues, same with Gotham Knights, same with Callisto Protocol etc...but it's not going to change anything...more games than ever are being released in an unfinished state and will continue to be...no amount of Digital Foundry or other tech videos will get developers to release PC games in pristine condition...always take the release date and add 4-6 months at the very least of patches and driver updates- Horizon Zero Dawn (PC), Dying Light 2, Cyberpunk 2077 etc

which is why I rarely buy games on Day 1 anymore outside of From Software titles...you get better performance and a cheaper price by waiting

Yeah, yeah we get it - the console settings are not equivalent. It sounds like a broken record around here.

Fact of the matter is, someone playing on a $500 console then a $1500+ "gaming pc" will in fact have a better experience on the console.

It doesn't bode well for pc gaming is all. You can be condescending towards the pleabs that don't know how much more awesome the pc settings are or at developers like CDPR that put out trash like this. Just stating the reality of the situation.
 
So I think people need to take a step back here and breathe: It looks like RT performance is not very good. That sucks, but then RT often is just too performance heavy these days. Particularly when bolted on to an older game. Instead have a look at the DX11 Ultra+ mode. How does it perform? How does it stack up compared to the original? If they have offered a graphical uplift over the OG that runs well, I see little to be mad about. You 100% have the option to play the game in DX11 and to not use RT.

Is it disappointing that RT doesn't perform better? Sure, but would you rather they simply leave it off? They could have just done only the DX11 version of the game. Instead, you have a choice, even if the RT choice is one that currently doesn't perform that well. Some disappointment is understandable, we'd always like better graphics and good performance, but I think the rage over it is far overblown. By all accounts the DX11 version looks better than the original and runs very well. That's a win.

You also completely ignore everything, its an old game, with a dx12 wrapper. It may be patched to acceptable, it may not. it still runs, it runs well if you don't use ray tracing, very well if you run it in dx11. (which btw it was designed to run in, and at usually 60fps since high hz monitors where pretty niche when it launched and now I can hit 140)

What does the game being for sale have to do with a free update, yeah botty, if you didn't buy the game, you gotta buy it to get the update.

AGAIN I am not talking about just this game. And people that speak up enough will end up drawing more attention just like giving horrible reviews will typically force at least some kind of response. Sitting around and doing nothing or making excuses for shitty products only gets us more shitty products.

I wasn't saying the game is 'on sale' I said it was 'for sale' as in: this is a product you buy for money.

Entitlement is an overreach. The video game industry pulls in billions of dollars, hundreds of billions of dollars. This isn't a charity play by CDPR, this isn't a goodwill Christmas miracle. This is an encouragement of a second wave of sales. They are a for-profit company trying to make profit. They aren't a plucky happy-go-lucky group of quirky nerds making a cute hobby project to put on the fridge. This is an attempt to make money, and one that presents value to the consumer, for sure, but one that is not immune to criticism. And those criticisms are not entitlement. If I paid money for something, be it 5 years ago or 5 seconds ago, I have a right to judge its value.

It looks better in dx11 than it did originally, it runs in dx12 which it never did before, RT breaks performance and its single core limited because its not a remake, its an update.

Yes its entitlement when you complain that its still for sale, and use that as not being free, as it was never going to be a free game, just a free update.

Pretty sure I didn’t pay for THIS game 7 years ago with all the nice RT features. :rolleyes:

Also most of performance is fixed now. Getting 105 fps in Velen with DLDSR 4K and maxed out everything. Game looks dope. Baron killed himself. Pretty sure that wasn’t the case when I played on console. :LOL:

It's not even close to being fixed yet. The digital foundry video clearly showed that top of the line CPUs are going to drop below 60 in demanding areas and people with much more mainstream CPUs or older high end CPUs will be in the freaking 30s. That's right a 7-year-old game spruced up a bit will bring CPUs that could handle vastly superior looking games with no problems down to shit show performance. Nothing to see here everything works great must be your PC is I'm sure going to be the next comment from so many people.
 
Finally played with the 1.5gb update. At least my GPU util % is up to 75% after previously being 35-50%. this corresponded with a nice increase in performance, as I am getting decent frames (60+) with RT Ultra+. Still disappointed, again, as the game does not look better than it used to with some mods (180fps+ does look alot smoother too).

This would have been the first game I really cared to try RT on, since its such a beautiful game, and have been really let down, overall. Hoping some subsequent patches fix it, otherwise im just rolling it all the way back and hoping my 2022 playthrough with 75 hours isnt bricked.

I was one of the first people to complain about performance. I also didn’t say it is 100% fixed. There is still some stuttering but it is a very playable game now. Wasn’t before the 1.5 GB patch that dropped in a couple of days ago.

It's completely playable at this point for me. The under-utilization sucks, but i'm getting consistent 60+ FPS. I never see over 80% out of my 4080, and CPU utilization is plain pitiful as well.
 
I just installed this and it doesn't run smoothly even with frame generation enabled. It constantly hitches when moving around. I also have an issue where I can't save my progress if I create a new game. I see all my old saves going back to 2015 (with different build versions) but it won't let me save my new playthrough.

I played with this update on my Series X for about 5 hours, and the experience was markedly worse than on PC. The latency feels twice as bad as on PC, especially in ray tracing mode. Ray tracing mode runs less than 30 FPS most of the time and is a blurry mess due to the low rendering resolution. Performance mode frequently has frame rate drops probably into the 40s, and control regularly becomes unresponsive every 4-5 minutes for half a second. I have none of those issue on the PC version with this update. The PC version has its own issues, but nothing compared to the console version.

See above. I game on my consoles about as much as my PC and I can definitively say that the console experience is in no way even close to as good as the PC experience.

No shader compilation stutters, but frame rate issues abound. If you think you're getting a smooth experience on today's consoles you are sadly mistaken.

Yeah, forgot to mention the loading times. I wonder if they didn't update the loading process with this update on consoles since it's just as slow as before even installed on the internal SSD. It loads in seconds for me on my PC. The game crashed twice on me on my Series X.

In the video he says that it's faster now than the last gen. I have it time stamped.
It seems to crash frequently on both consoles now, plus a lot more input lag with the RT mode enabled. Up to 65ms on the PS5 vs performance mode smh.

It does and does not look at good as v1.32.

Patch 4
- Removed HBAO+ entirely. Leaving just SSAO, which looks worse
- AA methods are all worse. All the temporal AA methods are over soft when at native or upscaling (TAAU,FSR2 and DLSS) & the FXAA does a worse job than before. DLSS is the least blurry, but it's still very soft.
- Textureing ends up softer if anything but FXAA is used. Because the temporals methods all look soft, to the extent of almost blurry, all that extra texture detail is generally lost unless up close enough to overcome the levels image softness.
- Runs worse at the same settings.

Can still all be fixed of course. But not exactly as awesome as we all hoped.

If you’re playing it without any raytracing features I’d agree, but again, no one is forcing you to use it. You can rollback to the old version if you want.

Sure.

Wrinkle to that.. make sure to backup your v1.32 save files before trying v4.0. Because once you jump to v4.0 it will convert those and you can't go back.

I've been waiting for the RT patch for a while now, finally gave it a try. Played the intro with Ultra RT settings minus post processing and was using DLSS Quality at 4k, it ran in the 70's but seemed to have a bit of micro-stutter. As soon as I got to White Orchard it crashed. Guess it still needs a few more patches.
 
I turned off frame generation. With it on, I was getting constant stutters, whereas with it off, the game runs fairly smoothly, even though it gets far fewer frames per second. Also, the game just feels far more responsive with frame generation off.

But as other people have mentioned above, once you play something like Elden Ring, playing The Witcher 3 is painful. I've been playing Death March mode, and dying quite a lot. One major reason though is that the game has a tendency to auto target, and switch targets often, and selecting the target does nothing for this. Then it decides to rotate the camera to awful positions quite a lot.
 
I played around a bit and got sucked in for a while.
The framerate in Novigrad is downright abysmal, barely above 30 on my setup, but everywhere else is actually pretty damn good at 60+. The game is definitely CPU limited in Novigrad, even with my 5950X. I was only using about 60-70% GPU.

Curious how a 5800X3D or 13900k performs.
 
latest update I am gettnig a good 70-80fps and everything looking okay except my 5900x is now at 90c

You are not getting 70 fps in the very cpu limited areas. Not even the fastest cpus out there are able to hold 60 fps in those spots.
 
I finally got round to remembering to record a video of what my frametime graph looks like in terms of stutters, wish I remembered to do the same before the hot fix patches as it was much worse visually on the graph before, but still evident now, though not as noticed in actual gameplay in most cases. In some cases it is a prolonged stutter where it appears the engine is loading shader stuff when it shouldn't be so points to lack of optimisation. One such area is the quest where you find the black horse and other bits for the possessed tree. Running around that area there are numerous times where the frametime graph has intermittent seconds of high activity then back down to the 10-17ms range.

The other good news is that in Novigrad now my fps is around 42fps at the lowest, previously I was seeing 30fps or so with max NPC density set and the same settings with RT on. So the hotfix has sorted that out, but still SHOULD be better but we have to do with CPU limited nature of the engine currently until they sort that out too.

As it stands, the game is now completely playable after the hotfix with RT enabled, Ultra+ and 3440x1440, at least on a 3080 Ti anyway lol.

you literally post the same thing in every gaming thread...anyone who gets different results than you is lying...if a game is running fine for you then according to you no one can have any issues...if you are having issues then everyone must have the same exact issues otherwise they are lying...and you will always point to Digital Foundry as your backup
 
I'd really like to see a decent CPU test. Haven't seen anyone do one yet. In particular would be nice to see if the 5800x3d with the cache helps here, or if the 5900/5950x are doing better because of their better clock speeds, etc.
