I'll have to admit right up front that I don't use Instagram and don't really feel any need to. With that said I'm amazed that a person can make the kind of money they do on a social media platform just posting something. I looked at the rich list and didn't recognize many of them and the ones I did surprised me with their posting fee. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it's obvious someone likes what they say or they wouldn't make that kind of cash. Viva la capitalism! Check out the listing here if interested.

While in some strange way it makes sense that brands would want to pay celebrities and soccer stars exorbitant fees to casually mention their love of some weird tooth whitener on Instagram, it’s the average joes-turned-influencers that make you re-think all your life choices.
 
They're on the decline for some brands, if I recall. It was a marketing fad to throw money at people with built-in audiences (those that have X amount of followers of Y demographic). Called "social influencers."

Some brands have realized that the return is not what it should be for the price.

They could be just normal people that started getting followers organically (posting unique / interesting content that is shared by others). Or they used tricks to grow their follower base (bots or social engineering).

One social trick is to follow as many people as possible, the psychology behind it is that humans tend to like to reciprocate and simply following that person back is an easy way to do so. You then unfollow those people after a little while, since they likely won't notice it - you do that so that your "following/followers" ratio is where it needs to be (e.g. if you follow more people than follow you, it looks bad to the system).

There are programs that will do this for you in a way that doesn't trip the spam guards.

I get how you make money on youtube (not that a lot do who try) but I'm not clear on Instagram as I don't use it. Basically a company contacts you and you say sure I'll mention or wear your product in a photo and they give you XX amount of cash? So for Jenner to mention your product you have to pay her a million dollars?

There are also companies whose business is to create a following for you. Just saw a new Twitch streamer the other day who literally started that day with no previous social media following and had 500 followers in Instagram already with 2 posts.

Maybe. If the number of followers are actual people and not shill accounts then the cost of about a penny a viewer seems like cheap advertising.

Yeah, we discussed those years ago in a marketing class. You pay per follower in bulk. They're either bot created accounts / click farms in India, or they're accounts that have been purchased for the purpose of it.

It's risky as YouTube / etc. will do an account purge and suddenly you'll lose a ton of followers. They also have to be careful now and make the following look organic, as you'll get your account locked if they just add them all at once.

Ala, you're a hot chick that posts hot photos, chances are a good amount of your audience will be dudes just strolling for bikini shots and ignoring any product placements.

If I'm not mistaken Instagram cracked down on pay-per-post schemes a couple years ago. The trick for the thots now is to make it look organic while still somehow making the product front-and-center.
 
It's all going tits up once the advertising bubble bursts. This is all paid in marketing dollars.

You know the story behind that? Knopfler overheard some guy in a store saying some of that stuff.
 
I saw an article someplace recently about resorts being inundated with requests from Instagram "influencers" requesting free, all expense paid packages just for showing up and posting on Instagram. So many that some resorts had to hire people just to screen the requests.
 
This is the world of narcissism. "Look at me and how I can make money for you and me!"....just pay me to be seen with it and you will sell more products because someone saw me with your stuff.......
Its disgusting really....
