Due to SNTsystems' Sick Rig 001 and its wide popularity, I have decided upon posting a worklog of its successor which is to be a more precise copy of the first.

Direct from my distributor and out of its carton. I have to turn this Lian-Li PC6070b.....

into this.....

More completed pictures of Sick Rig 001 and its hardware can be found at SNTsystems

are you going to use the same parts? man i cant wait for this to be done.

I'll pulled everything from the case just for the sake of showing everybody what Lian-Li packages with this mid-tower. You'll notice that the side panels are covered in Sound and Vibration dampening material, what you cant see in this pic is that the upper most panel is also covered with this same stuff. Lian-Li really built a great case for those who havent already read through reviews, its a great candidate for a cool running and quiet rig.

This case is serving the needs of a customer of mine, as far as I know he will be packaging many of the same components as the original. Expect 002 to look better than its predecessor. This mod shouldnt take me long to finish but I do want to make sure its up to par with the rest of my work.

Looks good Dan, some day when I actually have a job I'm going to have to get you do some mods for me :D

i love the LL's except for the crappy front fan design with bottom intakes for 2 80's.. wtf is up with that..

Those "crappy" fan locations will be cut for installation of an Aquatube. Otherwise those 2 fans are great for cooling the HDD rack that is located just behind them.

-Dan

The first thing to get done is to cut out that restrictive rear fan grill.

3.jpg

I couldnt find my old goggles so I had to make due with my Airsoft gas mask, oh darn. :D

4.jpg

After the short Dremel work.....

5.jpg

After the long hand sanding session with 120, 800 and 1000 grit sandpaper.

6.jpg

As you can see from the above pics I make sure that I protect the aluminum finish of the case with masking tape just in case the cut-off wheel slips. Slips are rare but they ruin a project if they occur and are hard to cover up.

Next step is to create another 80mm fan hole just below the stock location on the motherboard tray.

Is that the case you had at quakecon? If so I dont rember that side pannel, was it ever on there? But Man I loved those uv fans you had, where did you get those. lol sorry for all the questions.

JEEVES

That was indeed the case I had at QuakeCon, you may have only seen the case with the side panel off because I loved looking in on everything for so much of my stay there. :D

Those fans are the Aerocool Chameleons, I got them from SVC and I've been very happy with them. The case temps never change enough to make great use of the temperature dependent color changing feature but they look sweet anyways.

Well, I couldnt find my old 80mm fan frame that I used as a template for my hole cuts so I had to make another.

Now I get to use that fan frame yet again as a guide for the fan mounting holes. I used Elmer's Spray Adhesive to keep the template in place while I set up the handheld drill with my carbide bit.

The holes came out fine and I'll do the cleanup work tomorrow after cutting the 80mm hole.
Now Im all ready to start cutting with the drill press tomorrow.

And while Im at it I might as well start the side panel window mod since I'll need the press for that too.

'Till tomorrow! :)

It came out real nice. I might get some more work done this weekend if I can find some time between moving SNT to a new server and working on another customer's project. :)

I absolutely love my drill bits, they cut all metals on contact without the aid of oil.

Skill saws do easy work with aluminum.

23.jpg

25.jpg

Now for the install of the most popular radiator grill. :D

26.jpg

27.jpg

Everything nice and tight and ready to cool.

28.jpg

That's it for now but I'll have some more work done over the next few days.

-Dan

The usual masking tape.
29.jpg

I also clear the back of most of its sound mat ahead of time so it doesnt get gumed up in the hole saws.
30.jpg

Now to the cutting. :D

I completely cleaned up the rear of the side panel of the sound mat so I can install the window in the very near future. I'm also all about attention to detail, creating a window to fit these cutouts could be simple (squared) but I like to follow the design I have before me.
37.jpg

The polycarb window will fit this area perfectly and a hot glue bead along the edges will eventually secure it in place.

I like! I like! :D

Wow, this is gonna be awesome. I love your mods, Dan, and can't wait to see more. G0 AC!!! W00t!

i dont quite understand the pattern, is it for function or for looks? the holes on the side that is

It called sticking to a design concept (less is more). The porthole design was originally intended for a product of SNTmods, its still not released since Im waiting on another product for it to work with. As you can see Im still showing off the main components that "big" windows always show. I personally think "big" windows take away from the class of the case, thus my designs. :D

-Dan

Dan, I know there are a lot of people who bring up the tubing issue and all the old arguments, but I want none of that. I just wanted to say that I LOVE your work there and I really love the way the products look. I just wish I could afford to send you some money for some of that sweet pimp gear! I am still trying to fit some Aqua stuff in my first time liquid cooling mod.
:D Nice Job!

Dan, will the 2 fan radiator grill ever come back in stock?

They will be available again on Monday but the ones Im getting may be sold out by the end of the day. Next time I will be sure to get more ordered just in case I cant keep any past the first day.

-Dan

Im sorry for the lack of updates, I have been waiting on the arrival of a new band saw blade so I can have the window cut out cleanly. Besides that I just need to work on the Aquatube mount and window hole cuts up front and down below.

-Dan

Okay, I havent posted in more than 2 weeks but I have finally completed the last leg of the mods. I have had a lot of work during these past weeks and too much stress caused by UPS. Anyways, here are the pictures.

Aquatube front, center and down below flush mount sketch.

40.jpg

41.jpg

42.jpg

After cleanup and an Aquatube demo.

43.jpg

And while Im in the general area I decided to mask and sketch the cuts needed for the Aquatube to completely clear behind the front panel. I'll come back and cut it later.

44.jpg

And now the odd shaped Polycarb window, much easier to work with when compared to Plexiglas.

45.jpg

46.jpg

This is the basic shape of the window as it is installed to the reverse of the side panel. I have to take it to the disk sander to get it perfectly circular so it can fit in the predesignated spot. I didnt have anybody else around at this time to take a picture but I think you can use your imagination.

47.jpg

I finally went back and Dremeled the rear most front panel for the clearance needed by the Aquatube. Everything is very smooth to the touch.

48.jpg

Sketch for the Aquatube "window" in the front door.

49.jpg

50.jpg

There you have it, perfectly centered to eventually show off all the action.

51.jpg

And then I have no more work to do but to ship it to my customer, he might decide to pick up this worklog where I leave off. And on to another project, currently unnamed. :)
