Years ago, it was recommended to set the booktype for +R media, so that the reading device would think it was DVD-ROM" media, thus improving compatibility.
Even now, I find myself setting the booktype when possible. With current DVD players and drives, is there really any need since the majority has no issues with -R or +R discs?
