How did you guys find the panel uniformity on dark screens? I had the UN40JU6700 and it was a really nice monitor; however, on dark screens it almost looked like there was a big W on the screen in terms of darkness with the rest being bright.

This 6700 series was an edge-lit display. I know some of the higher series were full-array and I think if you are going to be using it as a monitor, you should definitely pay the extra for a full array version vs. the edge-lit version.

EDIT: Looks like the 7000 series is the lowest series with the full-array. At $599 for a 40", it's definitely worth the premium.

Does anyone own one of theses tvs (UN60KU6270 60) OP linbks to? Genuinely interested in picking one up. Totally understqnd they have entry level type specs but would be nice to have one of these to replace the ancient 37" Westy we have in the game room.

Why use a screen that large for gaming? Is seems so large you really have to look around to see things. I mean I like a large monitor, but it seems, to me, it's gets so large you have to actually swivel your head and move your eyeballs to notice things. (wow that seems lazy the way I put it) Mind you, it just seems like a lot of extra work to game rather than having a smaller screen with everything withing eye movement/peripheral vision.

A lot of us have been using big screens for gaming for years and years. Pretty much started with the Westy back in 2001 or 2002.

4k content is way way too small on anything other than a 40" + screen. Also people like to be immersed when gaming. It's an experience a brogamer on a 24" monitor is never going to get.

I like it. While it took some getting used to on the desktop, in games it never felt unnatural at all. It just sucked me in and became more "immersive" (to use a industry buzzword) with all the added peripheral vision.

That being said, I came from a 30" 2560x1600 Dell U3011, so I was already accustomed to large:ish screens.

All that said, I would have preferred mine slightly smaller. 48" is great, but 42-44" somewhere would likely have hit the sweet spot for me.

Mic drop. I have the same setup as Zarathustra[H], minus the side monitors, and I fvcking love it. So much so that I recently ordered one of the 40" models for work (arrived today - yay!).

I had two of the Westy 37" monitors...those were glorious and yeah, started it all for me. I used several smaller monitors after that, because I outgrew 1080p, but none were as impressive from an immersion standpoint.
 
Just be aware that these sets can only accept HDR signals, but are not capable of displaying it.

HDR done well makes a far greater impact in image quality then the 4k resolution does. So I recommend either spending more on a KS8000 set, or wait until next year and the more mid range options should have 10 bit panels and higher brightness to display HDR.

I ordered one of these yesterday afternoon and went with expedited (1-2 business day) shipping for an additional $37 or so. I'm in DE so no sales tax, so why not. Unfortunatly it is still stuck in "processing" (whatever that means) although I called and customer support said they did what they could to move it along. Hope to get it by tomorrow (shipping from MD, so fingers crossed). I don't really watch much live TV anyhow.

*Edit* - expect delivery by 3pm Friday!

What exactly is HDR and how does 10 bit relate to it? I'm slightly intrigued to get a large monitor like after hearing some others thoughts on it. I currently have a 4k 28" monitor and I want to get rid of it b/c everything is too small. I can't even believe they made 4k monitors this small.

I'm not as familiar with using TV panels for a monitor though.
 
i bought a 60 for my parents. it was supposed to be in today, but fedex says itll be in tomorrow now. should be a nice upgrade over the old 36" crt
 
Not bad, maybe when my 46" LCD Samsung dies replacing it won't hurt the wallet too much. As it is it's had a couple green/red lines on one side when you turn the TV on and after a while they fade out, but still can be annoying.
 
Wow - my 40" arrived and it is gorgeous. I already had a 28" Asus 4K but this is over the top. It is amazing - I've been reading/following rtings.com for a while. This model (Samsung UN40KU6290) doesn't even make the lists but I'm totally happy, especially for $289.

You and me both, bro. I remember paying $1999 after they were reduced from $3500 and being glad to do so. Now you can pick up the 2016 KS series for significantly less than we paid...BUT, we've also been enjoying ours longer.

I like the more vivid colors and the better motion handling capabilities of the SUHD sets, but as that doesn't really matter to me at work I couldn't help but jump on the KU6290 for $300. It's still way better than the dual 24" 1080p setup that I've been using for the past few years!

Had a panicky moment when plugged the 4K into Primary PC (I tested it first with another PC ). 4K was recognized but then no picture while 3 existing monitors started flickering like mad. Tried a few different arrangements and then called EVGA. While on the phone they confirmed it should work with SLIU 1080s. Then I saw elsewhere someone needed an HDMI 2.0 cable for something like this. I went back to original HDMI cable I used for testing with the other PC and everything worked!

Isn't there a term for logically replacing one thing at a time in any given broken system to see where the break is? It took me about 20 minutes to realize I'd changed something in addition to the PC. DOH! My dad the engineer would have face-palmed me if he were still here.

Not sure about the 4:4:4. Have to google that to see what it is.

This TV is so nice I think I'm gonna risk the wrath of the wife and buy another one for the family room, even though she already said no. This model will just barely fit into our cabinet, but would replace an aging and fairly crappy 39" Vizio 1080. I can use the Vizio at the office (tax-break?) or, if she really gets mad, just return the second Samsung to Costco. I'm in DE for work during the week so no sales tax - hmmmm...

I have to admit I just don't understand how you are okay sitting so close to a monitor that large. What is the appeal from having to move your head so far left and right to see what's going on on the far corners of the screen?

I find the added peripheral vision really adds to the in-game experience. I know we make fun of the marketing buzzword that is "immersion", but it really does make the experience more immersive.

No, but a passive viewing experience is different from an active one where you control the camera, at least in my opinion. It felt a little odd at first, but within only a half an hour of gaming I was fully accustomed to it and like it.

I have a pretty deep desk to, which means I sit about 2.5ft (~75cm) away, which I understand is a little further than some do.

For what it's worth, I stepped my way up to where I am now over the years.

2001 - Iiyama Visionmaster Pro 510 22" 4:3 CRT
2005 - Dell 2405FPW 24" 16:10 1920x1200 flatpanel
2010 - Dell U3011 30" 16:10 2560x1600 flatpanel
2015 - Current 48" JS9000.

Each time I had the same experience starting with the 22" CRT in 2001. They all felt weird and overwhelmingly large for 30 minutes, and then I started to love them.

Every time.

Also, every time I suddenly found my GPU to be underwhelming when it started to struggle with my new higher resolution :p

Hopefully I'll stay at 4k for a while.

In for a 60" Samsung - had two left at Walmart locally. I've been looking for a decently-priced upgrade to my current TV (42" Vizio, ~10 years old now) and I think this fits the bill.

They actually make 4k 24" monitors and I think some laptops come with 13" 4k screens IIRC....I think Dell had one?
 
So I picked up the 60" Samsung 4K - gorgeous TV, 4K Netflix stuff blew me away...reminds me of when I first saw 1080 HD.

One issue I ran into is that this TV (and all Samsungs apparently?) will not pass through DTS/Dolby from my HTPC...probably need to upgrade to an A/V receiver that has HDMI. Also, supposedly not many video cards have HDMI 2.0, though my GT 640 seems to do 4K @ 60 Hz (at a lower color depth supposedly?) so that might be another upgrade. Anyone have any experience with these? Or do I go down the rabbit hole of upgrades...

I have a 15" Laptop with a 4K and love it. Also have a 27"

Now I want a 40-42 4k for my game rig.

Thanks for the assist...I would love to learn more about this stuff anyway, though I think in the end I will probably just replace the receiver (it's coming up on probably 10 years old like my old TV was) and that should get me what I need. But I would still love to hear from an expert if that's the right way to go.

Also, wanted to throw out that info about the lack of 5.1 passthrough on the TV in case someone else was not aware, as I wasn't (I previously had a Vizio and it worked fine, assumed all TVs would do it).

Agreed 100%. I've been using 37-40's for years, and at 1080p they're certainly not ideal. But 4k is simply stunning. I swore i wouldn't go above 40 for a monitor, but i bit on the Sammy KS8000 49 inch(48.5)and was worried it was simply too large, but personally i couldn't be more pleased with 49 inches of quantum dot 4k goodness.

And OMG, i loved my old Westy 37 inch ! That was my first real large monitor that ruined me. I was too spoiled to ever go back to small monitors again. I absolutely adored that thing! Good memories!

I bought a 43" vizio to use as a computer monitor and i really liked it -- the color quality sucks and on my desk 43" feels a tiny bit to big. I think 37-40 would be perfect though. Its certainly more immersive when it fills your vision.

I've owned 2 Vizio's and they just didn't quite meet expectations. I like Vizio as a company, but in my experience they don't quite live up to Sony or Samsung when it comes to image quality in most cases.

oh im not debating that, i was commenting on the size or using tv as a monitor. I had a Vizio p50 4k that had a sharp picture, but i returned it and later regretted it. This E43, was $250 a few years ago and served its purpose.

Wurd.

I wanted their new 2016 P series, but it had some latency issues, among others, but apparently they've tightened most of that up via firmware revisions. Apparently it's a fantastic set for gaming and movies now. It's an impressive looking set.
