Ryzen 2700X or Xeon 2136 Home VM Lab

Looking to rebuild my compute nodes for my home lab. The two CPUs have similar scores on CPUBenchmark with the Xeon having a higher IPC and the Ryzen having two additional cores. I plan to purchase two and load them up initially with 32GB of RAM.

What should I look for in a VM host, higher IPC or can that be offset with having more cores and possibly a lower wait time?

For a VM host, my general preference is for additional cores unless it's going to be running a guest that craves IPC.

Also unless you know your memory needs I would go with 128 gig of ram on your hosts if you can swing it.

I won't be doing anything permanent or complex setups that need that much RAM. Im actually looking at just half populating the systems at 32GB expecting that to really be too much as is, lol.

My experience with VM hosting... all be it in a enterprise environment is you will want that ram. But you know your use case far better than I do!

That's interesting, in the enterprise I work at, we have more RAM than we know what to do with and not enough CPU...but that's mostly a result of working in the public sector I think.

Perhaps. We over build a but for compute. 36 core hosts with 512gb ram. But it does well. Our expensive piece is the storage and of course... Licensing. We get our hosts for under 18k a pop at that size. I've seen some 88 core 2tb hosts... But that's overkill and too many eggs in one basket for my group.
