PC Gamer has released their new top 100 PC games list for 2018. I found it amusing that personal favorites of mine like Regency Solitaire and Euro Truck Simulator 2 made the cut along with obvious stalwarts like Dark Souls and XCOM 2. Darkest Dungeon deserved the spot that it earned at position 47, but I'm not sure that Killing Floor 2 deserved to be on the list in my opinion. I might just grab Super Mega Baseball 2 whenever it is on sale as I enjoyed the first game in the series.

This list represents what we think are the greatest PC games you can play today. We wanted to celebrate the breadth and variety of PC gaming, and so, for the most part, have restricted ourselves to one game per series. You'll also find a selection of personal picks: games we individually love that didn't quite make the cut. Enjoy! If you're looking for a list of the games that helped shape PC gaming as we know it, try the 50 most important PC games of all time.
 
and the winner is....shocker...Witcher 3...actually I am legit shocked that Dishonored 2 is 2nd on their list...great game which went under the radar...not sure I would list it as my 2nd favorite game of all time but it's good to see it get some love
 
Funny how in the past i copied and pasted stuff about pcgamer.com here and now your posting stuff but its ok I do it for the attention :p LULZ Game On !
 
Was thinking to myself... "Was there even 100 games in 2018 that were good?" and then I realized that it's "That you can play in 2018" so yeah older ones count too, and it kind of says something that these older games are in the top spots.
 
In the midst of my 3rd play through of Witcher 3. Or is it my 4th? I just remember that after the last time I promised to cut myself off until after the next onslaught of games came out in coming months. Then that damned hd texture mod pack came out last month and blew me away. Took a fine wine and made it better. Doesn't hurt that CDprojektRed routinely support SLI and my 1080's are able to play this at 4k/60fps with every setting cranked including things in NV cp. Read on DSOG this morning about a mod that increases the background/secondary animations to 60fps but haven't tried it yet.
 
I own 3 games out of their top 10, 2 of which I have not even started. I'm not saying The witcher 3 is the best game ever it would need better combat for that imo, but top 5 or even top 3 would be well deserved.

Anyways, the list is filled with as much variety as possible making it mostly useless as there are too many games on there that are only there because there is nothing else in that niche, and lot's of better games are absent (blood, duke3d, F.E.A.R., Borderlands 2, Crysis series, Dragon age, swkotor etc..)
 
Nice, while reading it. I had a realization. Valve is Lucas Arts. They amazed us when we didn't have expectations. And now we ask, what are they doing?

#3, and well-deserved. One of the best games ever made. Honestly I think The Witcher 3 is overrated but what are you going to do... (it would still be top 3 or 5 for me here, just saying)

Probably higher-ranked than it should be but it was a great game. I would have liked to see Prey up there.

What i liked on the list was to realize that the authors like games i play for reasons i do not value as much as them.
CK2 is about to beat LoTRO as the game were i invested more hours in my life, mainly because it feels like an endless fountain of problems and challenges to overcome.
 
Yeah I'm not clicking though 14 pages not to see Pillars of Eternity Deadfire #1 or Kingdomecome Deliverance #2 Hunt Showdown #3

Alot of people seem to have opinions of what is the best of games today but none of that shit matters if the their reception isn't right in which they use to digest the game from the start.

A lot of garbage non-games on that list. I think they may need to re-evaluate their hiring policies at PC gamer. After all its not PC Casual.
 
I dunno, although they keep breaking Killing Floor 2 with the updates and introducing new mechanics, nerf this gun and that gun, I still play it with my friends. Still a solid team based wave game, there aren't a lot of quality alternatives. Kinda feel it should have been higher than 98, lotta crap on that list. Wish I had just gone to bed rather than spent the time to skim all those pages.
 
next time someone makes a list like this, please do something different than the bazillion other similar lists and add
  1. links to critical fan made patches and mods for each game
  2. links to get old games running perfectly on current pcs
  3. links to pop media trivia
  4. links to dev interviews, documentaries, insight
then ppl might actually click on the click-bait, cause every serious pc gamer already have a top 50++ quick-reference list in our heads which we can recite immediate on demand

or if they have no budget to publish a useful list just
  1. co-opt youtube / twitch Let's Play
 
I don't understand why a "list represents what we think are the greatest PC games you can play today" only inludes games from the last decade.
 
DragonBall Fighter Z is probably the best fighting game to be released since like marvel vs capcom came out as a actual arcade game. Apparently it's a keyboard/mouse only list.
 
Fallout (4) is way too low. I must show my disdain. I will provide scientific evidence for my belief, backed by unambiguous statistics and moral credibilities. Then I will comment about the author's collective millennial bias, their total failures at objective writing, their certain virginity, and finish by saying their mothers still have not taught them how to properly wipe their ass.

I like these lists for a couple of reasons - first it is fun to see where some of my favorites fall with their opinions, especially when I'm playing a game (like CK2) that doesn't get much exposure. Second, it's fun to see some other games I might be interested in playing. I appreciate that they included older games, and a variety of game genres to the mix, as I tend to pick up older games on GoG, Humble Bundle, Steam Sale, etc., rather than buying new. Mount and Blade: Warband looks interested.

I don't like these lists for a few reasons. Mainly, they are total opinion based, and does not give a good objective view on the game. I also would like some mention of "value" based on what you pay, how much time of entertainment you get, and the quality of entertainment. Like having Sims 4 on the list - the base game is rather devoid of features that came with the base Sims 3, so you have to spend lots of money to get the best value. I personally play Sims 3, and the aforementioned CK2, which both can cost a small fortune in all the add-ons and expansions, but you don't necessarily have to have all of them to really enjoy the game.

All in all I think the list reflects the reason why PC Gamer has become irrelevant.
 
My favorite of all time is Star Control 2 / The Urquan Masters.
I was surprised that Minecraft was not on there.

I felt the same way about Witcher 3. I believe what it is is that some of us become so accustomed to certain input patterns (W, A, S, D, spacebar) and mouse. I tried the same method on Witcher 3, but that did not work for me at all. I tried a gamepad, but the analog controls always wanting pull back to the center drove me crazy

That's why these types of lists are just clickbait. You'll click if the no1 game is one you like, and you'll also click if the no1 game is not your favorite.

What about freespace 2? Surely it demands inclusion, well it's one of my favourites anyways :)

That said, I expect Cyberpunk 2077 to usurp that throne when it comes out.
 
The wife loves Regency Solitaire... it was her #1 go-to game for several months until she discovered that Steam tracked her gaming time, then, back to Hoyle Card games

I just clicked to see what their opinion was. Witcher 3 being #1 was an opinion I agree with.
