Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is still out there telling everyone that Facebook doesn't sell user information, because they just share it with advertisers. However, when the question came up about not sharing data the COO stated Facebook depends on that data as part of the business model and to opt-out would cost the user a subscription fee. For once someone at Facebook is shooting straight and this is the first time I'm aware of any conversation that mentions opting out of data sharing. I can't help but wonder if this is a trial balloon to see if this is something that might save their bacon.
As Sandberg told Today: “Our service depends on your data, [so] we don’t have an opt-out at the highest level. That would be a paid product.”
