I was never going to be going on on the 3080, my sights were on the 3070, and who knows I may even wait for the 3070ti if necessary. But it is nice to see how this all plays out, things just aren't quite as black and white.

I am curious though how much the price difference of the cheap vs good capacitors are when bought at manufacturing quantities.
It isnt cheap vs good, its about selecting the right component for the job.
Component quality isnt in question with the poscap (although they arent Panasonic) vs MLCC issue.

edit
I didnt realise who I had replied to, I'm surprised you didnt know this.
You are held in good regard over issues such as this ...

Gigabyte burned me in the early 2000's but my current PC is pretty reliable, running: Gigayte 1660Ti OC & Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming mATX mobo

Edit: RE: CAPs
I remember pre-COV there was a worldwide capacitor shortage, we had trouble acquiring enough at work to get our boards stuffed.

Just an FYI before people start buying ASUS TUF and FE cards thinking they're unaffected:

We may yet find out that power supplies are getting pushed here. Pushed harder than the PS manufacturers ever really imagined they would be. Example: Just yesterday I had a Thermaltake Toughpower 850w, brand new, that a customer provided for me to build their pile of old but new in box x299 parts. It would power on but absolutely would not post. I did a voltage test AND tested it on other systems. It would fire up anything else I had in the shop, but not the 9800x on the Strix X299 board. It just sat there with a 00 no go error code. I opened up a new Corsair 750w Bronze supply and it fired right up. I switched back a forth several times just to make sure I wasn't nuts but it was 100% reproduction.

All supplies are not the same, even when they really should be more than enough either way.

We may yet find out with the 3080/3090 that the combination of both high current draw and needing very clean power may be finding weaknesses in supplies we'd never suspect would be an issue. Even big name brand supplies.

But hey, it's just one more possibility of many.

A driver update or BIOS tweak are just as likely to fix it.

Who knows. I'm still trying to score a 3080.

Honestly, I'm happy I just scored a PS5 pre-order tonight finally.

Here's hoping that a 3080 comes in stock before I just buy a Big Navi card at launch. I'd at least like to test it out for a while.

I’m honestly more excited for my PS5 than a 3080. Maybe AMD could change that with Big Navi.

I think this has good insight for home users, but I don't think it would be particularly relevant for the youtube reviewers who are using new/beast power supplies and exchanging them all the time as they review them.

and here I thought buying a Founders Edition card or an Asus custom one would be safe...I guess I'll be holding off until this issue is sorted out and resolved...seems like more then a simple driver issue

will 3070 cards be effected as well?...or is the lower TDP on the 3070 a factor?

If you want to take a shot at getting one here is a way to place a 3090 PNY in your cart at office depot. Click add to list on the 3090 then select that list it will give you an add to cart option. It will add it and give you a check out with a shipping date.
PNY 3090

They released stock now so there shouldn't be a need for that step. If it goes out of stock you may want to try the above.

Yooooooo, no bot needed. From the discord server I got the info from there was 90 meant for all stores in the US(Max and Depot) but they didnt want this high of a card with this level demand in store.

Ouch, I would have taken that 3080. I just convienced the wife she wouldn't need a 3090 but saw this and my mind ordered without much thought.
I guess I can get out of the Step-up queue when this 3090 arrives. I can return it to Amazon, still sealed.

I am in the step up for a 3090 also from evga.. I spent an hour and 45 mins trying to checkout on release for a 3090 ftw3 ultra and after that failed I f5'd until step up was active.. did the step up within seconds of going live.. someone on the evga forums said their step up to a 3090 already shipped.

Yeah, they have a separate line for tep-ups and retail. They started filling the 3080 line when they shipped the FTW's.

We will need a new thread when the cards people are returning end up as refurbs/ b-stock. I imagibe there will be 3080s available for $400-450 when that time comes. If they/we are lucky NVIDIA will fix it before cards flood back for return.

We thought used 2080 cards got a kick in the nuts, but this debacle will make it worse for that market once new and refurbished supplies peak up.

The bots weren't aware of this one, it was up for about an hour hiding behind the add to list button. Then they released when the channel I was in said we can post out for other people.

I clicked on it 5 minutes after you posted, and the add to cart button was there for me right away, didn't have to add to list or anything like that. Didn't order one though.

Oh we are way too far away from bstock hitting that low of a price. After a refresh maybe not even until the next gen launches. 2080 bstock stayed so high on evga until within the last 6 months.

Come to think of it those cards are going to be a deal then.

But if there is no shortage of components then it absolutely is a matter of cheap vs good. Because why else would a manufacturer use substandard parts unless there was a cost savings to use them? Unless this is nvidia's fault telling manufacturers they can use parts that ultimately are substandard and prone to not working, cost savings almost always is what a manufacturer is going to be focused on as long as it works... which apparently it doesn't very well.

No offense, but that is very simplistic. Cheap versus good maybe a part of it, but availability might also be a factor. I have heard reports of MLCC shortages. It isn't like they are bad capacitors, they just might not be the right tool for the job, and Popscaps might actually have properties that would seem better (on paper), specifically the resistance to thermal shock from the heatup/cool down cycles. Additionally, the FE and Asus models have displayed a similar issue at times, so it isn't completely limited to the capacitors.

You would think internal testing would have rooted this issue out earlier, but it sounds like Nvidia gave the AIB market very little time.

If it cannot be addressed in drivers, I would think you'll see a firmware that limits the boost speed to avoid the issue.

No offense taken, but I literally put the caveat of availability in the first sentence.

Regardless off what the problem(s?) are this launch is definitely looking to have taken a huge 180 from hype to "game breaking flop" lets hope firmware or drivers or some software thing can fix this though, and hopefully not by crippling the card

Sorry, I confused you with someone else who had earlier commented on component "quality", which is why I was surprised who I'd replied to.
Beer and all that :)

Is anyone else running distill IO monitors and notice Nvidia says now in stock more regularly than you'd expect. By the time the page opens up it's gone. EVERYTIME. In fact I've never seen stock at nvidia's site.

Yep, had the same experience. It is changing to "Add to Cart" but I can never get there in time. After about 20 failed attempts I turned it off. I'm starting to lose hope for now.

Same situation here. Just monitoring Newegg and EVGA now since there were too many false positives with Nvidia's site

Most people probably know this but just incase, EVGA Jacob on twitter says they will have MORE stock some time in October. How much, when and which stores? He didnt specify.

I was able to checkout a PNY XLR8 3090 at Office Depot, 8:18AM eastern. Sadly they wouldn't apply my signup coupon. We will see if it ships. Anyone know if the PNY is affected by the cap issue?

PNY is not so far, they are the FE contracted builder and went with 5+1 on the 3080's. No one has done a tear down on the 3090's that I can find yet but I'm guessing they went atleast that and maybe even 4+2. I don't see anecdotal posts of them boosting high either so that may help.

I was hoping I’d see some stock at Bestbuy today but seems silent. I wonder if this cap issue put a hold on a lot of cards.
