Oculus VR headsets will soon require Facebook accounts
Starting in October, new Oculus VR headset owners will need a Facebook account if they want to use their device..."Everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account," the company wrote in a blog post...Existing Oculus headset owners will be able to keep using their standalone Oculus accounts for now, which are just tied to an email address...Come 2023, however, their accounts will no longer be supported and they will lose "full functionality"...
Well, at least it will only affect "new" Oculus VR users... I sold my Rift several months ago after upgrading to an Index. Appears now that I won't be keeping my Quest either past 2023 (or buying any other Oculus product going forward now.)
Wonder if people could get a refund based off of this, since they straight out lied...if they ever implement it on existing ones...Lol nice find.
So basically they lied massively?

Well, I sure picked a good time to get a Valve Index and sell off my Rift CV1 setup...
My existing account should be good until 2023, at the very least, but I'll have to think real hard about how I'm going to keep playing the exclusive software I have tied to that account that simply doesn't have any SteamVR-native releases.
Yeah, unlike most people, I have one hell of an aversion to Facebook, even if the Marketplace is apparently much better for finding cheap used cars than craigslist is at this point and that one friend of mine insists there's good Amiga-related groups that don't also post on EAB and other such forums. I'm not making an account there for as long as I can help it.
Yore!You're *.
Please some other folks like Valve release a Quest killer. I did just purchase one for a family member (for xmas) but I'd pay $100 more for a non-FB version, that can be played 100% offline with no "account" crap, I'm sick of all these accounts for every little thing in life tracking our every move. Soon toilet paper rolls will require a "login" ffs
In a statement provided to Heise Online, the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (HCDPFI) said, in part:
"The obligation to create a Facebook account [to access an Oculus headset] is legally extremely questionable, at least for those who have already bought a headset. Whether this also applies to new customers is definitely open to discussion. That should largely depend on the design of the contract, which we do not have."
They know they have a lot to make up for.
I don't.We all do.
German courts have repeatedly struck down land grabs by US companies; this could well be the latest, and it's hard not to conclude that Germany is in many ways the only country that can currently claim to be the leader of the free world.

New to VR so have a question for you because I can see your very informed on this matter.Well, at least it will only affect "new" Oculus VR users... If I go and get a Quest 2 tonight to hook up to my PC and play American Truck Simulator I need to have a Facebook account to even use the head set? I will be only using them for this game and this game alone via the link cable I could care less about the stand alone programs. Thanks for your help with this.
Unfortunately yes. It is part of the account creating process for the Quest 2. And you need to install Oculus Rift software too. Oculus devices cannot run straight from the SteamVR without Rift software running in background.
Thanks for the information..... I think this puts VR out of reach for me then. I can’t justify the cost for the one game I would play but it’s supposed to be great! I do have a old fake account I made about 12 years ago but that could bite me in the *ss from what I’m reading. May have to think about this some more.....
I have $150 in gift cards from work so it would be less... just not likening the way this is looking as far as tracking.... but + 100 to get out of it for this game seems to much. You can just make one and treat it like a steam account and never actually go to the Facebook website. That's basically what I do.
$300 is a lot to dedicate to one game though.
