Oculus + Touch for 1 week while my buddy is on vacation

I just brought it home and looked at Steam before even opening the box.
My first task will be to update my vid card drivers & swap cables to free up an HDMI port.

My 1st question - can I just install Steam VR (+ Steam 360 video player?) or do I need to register w/ Oculus to DL their drivers (I assume this is the case)?

My 2nd question is - what games do I already have that work w/ Oculus?

My Steam Library menu has a VR item & only 3 of my games show up there.
DCS World (flight sim)
Project Cars
Elite Dangerous

I checked Steams VR store & several other of my current games are listed as supporting VR - but when I filter by Oculus, most of them go away, so maybe that filter just sucks - or are games VIVE / Oculus specific?

You must install the oculus home software and do the setup first, even when your running steamVR it has to run through the oculus program first then gets translated to OpenVR/SteamVR. But you should do it just for the game library of the oculus home anyways. The rift comes with many awesome free games the most notable being robo recall. And some rift exclusives such as lone echo are worth it to, as for games that don't mention rift support they will work. Developers only put rift support if it was built to include the rift sdk but will still work without. So far there isn't 1 vive game that doesn't work with the rift, the biggest big being the controls don't always map the best to the touch controllers but that's a game by game basis and it some cases can be remapped.

Your space is fine, oculus recommends a min space of 3ftx3ft so as long a son your bigger than that you can do full 360 games with the touch.

Specs look fine, past the recommended req. For rift games the only thing holding you back is windows 7. A few games are windows 10 only (such as minecraft VR)

What about the games I listed that show they have VR support? COD, Ghost Recon, etc.

Is it just goggles replacing my monitor to enable head tracking vs. being "immersed" in a 3d world & needing to raise your arms to shoot rifles, dual wield pistols, open doors, drive jeeps, etc.?

Where do you see VR support for those games? Only Assetto Corsa and iRacing have native support, I believe. FSX has FlyInside which gives you close to native VR support, but it's only free for 15 minutes at a time.
 
Sorry, I went to Steams VR store & clicked various filters on & off - VR Only, VR Supported, Oculus, etc.

At some point, I saw a tab for BEST SELLERS so maybe I goofed & had also un-clicked VR Supported.

I was just looking for games already in my library, but had apparently turned the VR filter off.

However, Elite Dangerous, Project Cars, Dirt Rally are listed - but only with game pad support!

If my G27 wheel & Thrustmaster flight stick don't work, this may not even be interesting enough to install w/ my library.

I can vouch for the G27 and flight sticks working in those respective titles. I don't think Steam breaks down peripheral support beyond gamepads and keyboards, at least last time I paid attention. In any case your wheel should be fine in all the racing titles (I recommend iRacing especially - great VR support and well organized community in general). Elite Dangerous supports a variety of separate input options, so even a HOTAS would work.
 
Relax Troy talk, most of the VR driving games all support a very wide range of wheel/pedal control accessories. And flying games such as Elite Dangerous support just about every HOTAS out there. Steam doesn't really go beyond identifying keyboards and gamepads - with the exception of knowing about VR controllers from the Rift/Vive. If you are worried about support in a particular game, there's also this really neat search engine known as Google. :D
 
That said, look at Vorpx for adding VR support to games that don't have it. From what I heard results are hit and miss depending on the game but it does work
 
Thanks guys, I just started looking into this tonight and never read much about it before (saw it on youtube months ago).

Updated vid card drivers, rebooted, Oculus software / drivers finally finished DL'ing, installed, ran setup / demo.

It's kinda' cool, but now I need some full on VR games!

IMHO, You really can't get more full-on in VR right now than Lone Echo and Robo Recall. If you are into sims, then Elite Dangerous is also a really great choice - but you'll ideally want a full HOTAS setup to go with it. There are lots of really great choices as to full-on VR games out there now. Enjoy!
 
Elite dangerous can get confusing with the xbone controller because the ABXY buttons have alternate uses when combined with the D pad. So if you hold down the X button, for example, a pop up will appear that shows the extra commands available with the D pad.

robo recall is free when you buy the rift + touch controller
 
Yeah, but my buddy installed that with his purchase, so I'm not allowed.

He's currently pissed that he paid $600 - 34 days ago & it's $400 now w/ no price match refund.

If it stays @ $400 - I will jump on-board after I deal with some other $$$ priorities.

Gotcha, I think the $400 price stays until mid aug then it will be going up to $500 as the new price point
 
WOW - just ran some Dirt Rally & pCars... so tempting to say - to hell w/ my credit card payment!

Dirt Rally was kinda' flaky to get going with, but after some fiddling - WOW!

pCars "just worked" but was not as cool as Dirt Rally.

Time to try iRacing - which I expect to be spectacular - as someone mentioned above.
~ sadly, I can barely maintain my safety rating in 2d, so I fear that I am DOOMED!!!!!!!!!

My home was robbed while I took my mom to the doctor and I never even got to open my Touch controllers before the meth / crackhead took them. The Oculus head unit with a XBOX Open controller was pretty awesome while playing Project Cars! I will have to order new controllers so I guess I missed out on the free games that came with the $400 package from Amazon.

One thing that annoys me is the screendoor effect. I would return the unit and wait for better screen technology to come out, but of course I am stuck with it since 1/2 the package is MIA due to the reasons above.
 
Great description - screendoor effect was happening for me too! Noticed it - didn't know how to describe it...

The HMD or display part is there with one sensor. The Touch controller box contains the 2 controllers, another sensor, and some Rock Band thingy. I have to order another set of the controllers for $100. :( I tried to get a cheap set from Amazon Warehouse Deals, but the sensor was missing.

Yea Project Cars on whatever default setting was in the game looked very weird and "blocky". I was in the alpha for the game before the car models had tires on them or steering wheels and I've never seen blocks like that before. ;)

With that said VR was the most immersive amazing experience with the game that I have ever had! I was blown away! Turning your head and looking at the car beside you is so darn cool! Being able to look up at the rear view mirror just like I used to do in my younger days when street racing in "Mexico" was fun as hell! Even though the screendoor effect was still there, I was giggling too much to care.

I just convinced myself that I was playing an old Daytona arcade machine or Ridge Racer and all was well. :)
 
iRacing was spectacular!!! VR menu showed no races (or I was corn-fused), so I launched from desktop & put on the goggles.

Did some practice, 1 qualifier, 1 race. I still suck and finished poorly, but it was visually fantastic.

Weird thing - I had to physically scoot my playseat back / forward to change my FOV rather than use the keys set on my KB.

SIDE NOTE: I hate B & C racers running in the D class. Cherry picker douchebags.

Ran Assetto Corsa for about an hour yesterday & drooled all over my G27.

Tried some ARK today (never installed the +TOUCH controllers, so it was just game pad).
NOT obvious RE: how to run ARK on Oculus in VR, but there's TON's of potential here!
PS: I played 70 hrs w/ KB/MS in the past but only lasted 20 minutes w/ the game pad & these tiny VR menu's.
 
Do you have access to your friends Oculus account? I let my friend borrow mine for a week and he just played the games I have already purchased (and bought me a few, too!)
 
No access to his account.

I might have actually logged more hours on this Oculus than he has & this is a ploy to get me to buy his unit!
 
Wait, wait, wait, hold up. You didn't install the touch controllers?

Brah.

You've got to at least load up some of the cool free stuff in Steam like The Lab and the Budget Cuts demo.

If he ends up selling, at least make sure he throws in his Oculus credentials so you don't have to buy RoboRecall.
 
My racing games work great w/ my G27!!!!

I don't need no more stinkin' controllers dammit. /s

He says the controllers are the "big deal" too, but I will have to physically "hover over / straddle" my racing seat to use them.

I just haven't seen anything compelling to make me want to try them, but I'll CK youtube RE: The Lab & Budget Cuts demo's.
 
Throw everything you own out in the hallway and start playing room scale ASAP.

YouTube isn't going to show you whats what.

I don't really have any room (see OP) to use touch controllers.

However, my buddy has a biz trip Monday, so I might get to keep his stuff another week.

If so, I might decide to move my desk & stuff.
