https://www.oculus.com/blog/a-single-way-to-log-into-oculus-and-unlock-social-features/

Today, we’re announcing some important updates to how people log into Oculus devices, while still keeping their VR profile. Starting in October 2020:

  • Everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.
  • If you’re an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you’ll have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts.
  • If you’re an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years.
After January 1, 2023, we will end support for Oculus accounts. If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account. We will take steps to allow you to keep using content you have purchased, though we expect some games and apps may no longer work. This could be because they include features that require a Facebook account or because a developer has chosen to no longer support the app or game you purchased. All future unreleased Oculus devices will require a Facebook account, even if you already have an Oculus account.

I didnt pay much my rift. I think it was like 299 like back in 2016 or something. Ive used it so much all the glue is wearing off. Its time for a non FaceCrook upgrade anyways.

I will get a Index or whatever the next badboy is that comes out from NOT Facecrook.

Damn... the Rift S was the only option that has prescription lens options.... I do so dislike contacts, but the HTC’s just got a lot more competitive.

That's unfortunate, looks like this will be my last purchase from them. I have a FB account for updating my family on life events while overseas, other than that I avoid it like the plague.

FYI, my current Oculus account is on different email/not linked to Facebook. But looks like that won't matter in two years and since they are making it mandatory... I will find something else.

I agree, Facebook profits off of selling people's information so supporting them financially makes no sense.

Lots of folks seem hyped for the HP Reverb G2. We'll see, I guess.

i have an alt FB account for games that need it, kids game saves mostly. If I can link it to that (different email accounts on Oculus and alt FB, then may not be a big deal, but i do hope to move on from the Rift to something better by 2023.

Garbage, I've been wanting to get a Rift S or whatever its successor will be since they haven't been in stock anywhere recently. I would consider an Index if it didn't require the base stations since I'd like to move between different PCs and not have to set up the base stations everywhere, plus I think my office might be a bit too small to set the base stations far apart enough. I hope an Index successor or alternative comes along soon that doesn't require base stations then.

Taco is sure they have that loophole worked out and will know who you are regardless.

All it takes is friends and family to put up photos or talk about you even unintentionally and a profile could be created from that.

To be fair, and not to defend Facebook, that’s literally all tech companies now. Heck, even Windows 10 is tracking everything now and sending that data back to the mothership, like malware is known to do.

Who cares?

If you are not a Facebook user, you can make an account and do nothing else with it. They aren't spying up your asshole just because you created an account...

Nice! Too bad for me their lenses don't go up high enough, though.
Yeah, I know. My eyesight falls in range of what they offer direct, one of my kids does not. I bought the adapter from them, and then got lenses made locally.
I never knew this was an option. I always just deal with my glasses getting smashed into my face.
Yeah, first thing I did after getting the original Vive was start looking around for these. Found these guys and their prices are not too bad and they shipped within a few days of my order, so I had a good experience there.

What I would fear is when you end up getting banned from the platform, you will lose access to everything.

That's not something to fear, that's something to aspire to achieve.

I understand this. You won't be alone in that fight, if it comes to be.

Well, I was considering buying a Quest. Not anymore. Screw Facebook and their commie agenda. Thanks for the heads up.

I don’t see how this is functionally different than when it was an oculus account or if it was a PSN account, or a Steam account. They all share data to some extent hell most of the servers that host the data are probably running in AWS.

How else will your friends and family be able to join your VR hentai simulator session?

Steam & PSN accounts won't follow you all around the web, for one thing.

I’m pretty sure they take your addresses and information to track your social media movement, tie that back into your gaming usage and online interactions so they can bundle and sell that data to advertisers and marketing agencies. So even if you aren’t using the same email address they do have the capability to determine which FB accounts could be yours based on the IP addresses they are accessed from. Even if you use a VPN they can match the activity there unless your VPN is randomizing your outgoing IP they provide based on a site by site basis. The “science” of collecting your randomized and sanitized data to package it back together as a whole person is pretty thorough and scary if you stop to think about it.

If you look at that much Virtual Porn then be proud of it, go on FB and say "I LOVE VR TENTACLE PORN!". You won't have friends to worry about spying on you in *no time*....those that remain, they ain't gonna judge you... :)
