The crew at Engadget have quick and dirty review of the Oculus Rift posted today for those of you interested. Any of you got your headsets in yet?

As a first-generation VR product, the Oculus Rift delivers an impressive amount of immersion. The big downside is its price, as well as the fact that it requires a PC gaming rig. For most people, it might be wiser to wait until the price drops for high-end VR.

EuroGamer and Ars Technica have excellent reviews, generally hype and loaded-opinion free. Looks like a solid Generation 1 release.....some gems, some warts. Let the grandstanding and finger pointing....COMMENCE!

It is because it wasn't made by Apple...if it was made by Apple they would say Apple is giving it away! I can't trust a thing engdaget says after their ipad mini review from a while ago.

For me it was that and their political hackery that just got to much for me.

Good on him for being honest. It sounds superb despite the few issues.
I'm really glad it has a first class sound system, I was going to get a high end Oppo set of headphones (they gotta be good for me to bother).
I dont fancy the Vive at all, it has 4 cables, wtf is job simulator??? and I'd rather be sat down playing games.
Spending lots of energy to relax, what?
And with the OR not being room based (for now), the games will be more to my liking.

I'm really looking forward to getting mine in 2 months.
A friend will get his very soon, I'll know what I'm in for at least :)

Exclusive titles, there it is, and that is why I'll be going with the Vive, since Valve is a pretty damn good partner for exclusive content, whereas Oculus has, well, nobody we've ever heard of.

I think my gear vr is good enough for the time being, once it matures on the pc i might pick one up.
I can at least spin around in my chair without wrapping the cord around my neck, is there a large choking hazard label on the rift? There should be...

I'm not aware of any exclusive titles besides Lucky's Tale which was in-house.

One thing that surprised me is I had to use the full 70mm ocular spacing for maximum sharpness. I didn't realize I had facial structure straight out of Avatar. I hope it fits everyone.

I guess you have never heard of Eve and CCP. One of the longest running MMOs around. Eve Valkyrie would be the only reason I would even consider buying a set at this point. Don't get me wrong being hooked up with Valve might work very well for HTC long term. Myself I will sit VR out until they have a more consistent standard. Who wants to get stuck with the VR equivalent of a Beta player. I am sure there will be enough interest in the first few years, that I can safely sit out until 2nd or heck even 3rd generation hardware. I get the feeling there will be a resolution race soon enough, as soon as one of these guys release an "extreme res" or full on 2.0 version that doubles the resolution the other will be forced to do the same. With the mobile sector pushing the cost of high resolution display tech down and down I doubt 1080p per eye is going to be the best on offer in a year from now.

Why are you saying that these are 'Beta' versions? That's what all the development kits have been used as, and they themselves are pretty great (Oculus DK2 gave first introduction to standing and movement with positional tracking, Vive DK1 made it even better). These are the true consumer experiences. Resolution itself hardly matters as much as establishing that the product even exists (for now, it's just another detail you can advertise: Check StarVR out for super-high res HMDs).

I'm certainly biased and all that, but waiting isn't going to do you any favors this soon, since both consumer headsets are going to stay as they are for a good few years before CV2 comes out.

:) that isn't what I was saying. I guess I was showing my age. "Who wants to get stuck with the VR equivalent of a Beta player."... perhaps a newer way of saying that would be... "who wants to get stuck with the VR equivalent of a Zune." or "who wants to get stuck with the VR equivalent of a HD-DVD player" or "who wants to get stuck with the VR equivalent of Myspace" or "who wants to get stuck with the VR equivalent a windows phone"

Anyway ya was referencing the actual Sony Beta format which although superior to VHS lost, sticking plenty of people with a very expensive and very good system that became pretty useless. Just saying I am not in a rush to jump into VR until things are standardized... to further make the point that I'm old, who wants to be the kid with the Colecovision when all your friends have an Atari. (ok bad example my Coleco was pretty awsome) lol

Oh, betamax. Yeah, didn't quite catch that. Showing my age myself.

Alright, I understand your point. I feel that it's a little *too* early for any real big players to set themselves up (for all we know, Oculus could crash and burn in a year and Atari will make a big comeback), so I feel that most investments for at least the next half-decade are 'safe', in that there won't even be time to establish how to provide basic features like roomscale, let alone if there'll actually be any explicit advantages for any specific headset or company.

I'll stick with my google cardboard for now and wait for this VR stuff to mature and the price to drop a ton and also be be wireless. Look out 2018 I am ready.

It also depends whether you want to be in on the advent of VR and the fun that brings.
If you have no room for another hobby then you may as well ignore it for now.
For the time spent using and the quality of experience, its excellent entertainment for relatively little outlay.

The Zune HD continues to be an exceptional DAP. Just sayin'.

Just got mine yesterday (Kickstarter edition). I have 2 x DK1's, 1 x DK2, 2 x GearVR and have tried literally every demo and I have to say, first thoughts are, best box I have ever seen. Seriously the box it comes in should win some sort of packaging award (if such a thing doesn't exist, it should, just to award this box).

Cardboard aside.... hehe.... The screen door effect is still there, much less than before and certainly these screens are major improvements and for a "first" consumer release it shows the promise of the platform, I feel. When paired with a powerful PC and UE4 or other sufficiently detailed graphical content, it is very compelling. My biggest gripe so far has been that the screens have this massive "light shaft" issue with any text on a black background. Almost every intro to any content has some sort of "logo" over black background and it looks horrible, like as if there was massive sun glare in your face. That is sort of off putting at first glance but quickly fades once the full content loads.

Running on a Titan X SLI setup on X99 with 4.5Ghz overclock (just turned off SLI for now).

The Oculus Rift can do room scale. Just "not" as good as Vive:facepalm:
