That's not permanent though. That's the hardware manufacturer not updating their driver, and unless the hardware manufacturer has gone out of business or stated that they're definitely never going to update it and not releasing the code for anyone else to, then the state of it not being functional is variable.

Additionally, there is the option of using a different yet current operating system and the hardware may function perfectly on those.

The hardware isn't broke permanently. The current version of windows just doesn't have a working driver for it.

Windows 7 patches aren't much better these days, one of the Aug 13 patches borked a bunch of PCs including my old pc.

I couldn't even boot into safe mode and the normal boot fixes like system file checker and rebuilding the boot sector didn't help. It turned out that it broke a system file related to EFI and there was an old hotfix for something completely unrelated that was supposed to fix it but I couldn't figure out how to use DISM for an offline image so I ended up restoring to an old backup. Luckily I had a fairly recent backup image and I mainly use that PC as a DVR so I didn't lose much but it's ridiculous how badly it broke windows.

But hey no more pesky patches for it soon.

Drivers were a big part of the problems ME had. I don't think 3dfx ever made a good glide driver for ME. There are good 3rd party ones however.

Yep. ME was a nightmare with hardware that didn't have proper driver support for it and that was basically all hardware released before ME and most released the first few months after. On hardware with proper drivers it was much better than W98 with one of the biggest improvements being that drivers didn't get corrupted every time you coughed or looked at the pc wrong.

Delete all the hidden bluetooth devices in the device manager. I had to do that when I swapped boards between two machines with existing Windows installations. Once I did that, Bluetooth devices worked correctly again.

I gave it about 2 weeks and hadn't heard of any issues. There really isn't much discussion about Win 7 patches these days though, even at places that specialize in that sort of thing.

In it's roughly 7-8 years of existence I think I seen only one or two Windows updates give me grief with the actual rig. In that time it's gone from 7>8>8.1>and all the variations of 10. Wednesday morning saw the update prompt while doing some things and went ahead and told it to update&restart. Didn't make it past POST. Twice. Thankfully Windows managed to repair itself and start after the 3rd time. Wasn't really looking forward to re-imaging and glad I didn't have to. Bad MS!

I'm surprised anyone with half a brain installs patches and updates right away. Delay any updates/patches for a few weeks so that the rest of the public can beta test them and freak out first..... then no problems. This is nothing new or unusual and is standard practice for big business going back to the 90's.

Indeed, and that's been my MO way back to XP. Wait a week or so and see what bugs there are. Even if MS had a huge patch testing team for 1000 people, they're not going to catch all the use cases for millions of unique computer configs. I occasionally go faster, but it's rare and frankly, 10 generally doesn't update for a week or 2 (if that, because I generally end up search for new updates before it ever asks to install anything...you know, pretty much like 7 and 8), but maybe 10 just likes me better than everyone else (or my install is borked in a good way)

I've never had to do it, but I always have a backup of my boot drive that's no more htan a week old. Worse comes to worse, just restore from my NAS. But again, the only issue ic an recall having that was bad was in 2015 and I either did a system restore or it was a major update and I just undid it.

Windows 10 LTSC can be legally bought for less than $5 on eBay.

Letting Windows auto-update is foolish in general, though.

except the patch had nothing to do with boot issues, lol.. the only thing the patch broke was the search function in cortana and start menu and people are acting like it's the end of the world.. i can't even remember the last time i searched for something in start menu let alone used the worthless ass cortana feature.. so woopty do the patch broke something i don't use..

in your case you may want to start looking at possible memory issues starting to happen if you were forced to repair windows after multiple post failures.

Eh, I have been using Windows Search since Windows Vista. Heck, before that, I would just hit the Windows key + R, type in the program and hit enter. That is far more convenient when I already have both hands on the keyboard.

Wow....I don't use cortana (AFAIK), but the only way I use the start menu is search. That said, I dont' know if this affects me, because MS hasn't asked me to install any patches this month (though i know I can go there and download them....I just normally wait 2 weeks to see what shakes out (but of those occasions I don't wait, I've only had one issue back in 2015 and that was one of the major updates, not a regular patch, so I just uninstalled it).

I'd visit friends and they had 6 months to a year of patches that they hadn't installed and then people on [H] bitched about how windows wasn't secure, even though more than 90% of the attacks were using vectors that were patched months earlier, and my friends were all w/w and computer engineers!

Sorry, but the average computer user can't be trusted to patch their system (or anything at all). That is why they changed how they patch.

I speak from experience with the insider program...i tested a number of "early releases and they had some serious bugs that wouldn't get fixed until like 2 releases after that......It was like they just experimented with builds until one worked......the program is a mess. One bug even messed up so bad you couldn't roll back to the previous build so i had to wait a few weeks to finally get a new build that fixed the old crap.....They hear people but they don't LISTEN to people.

You’re correct - they don’t listen AT ALL. At this stage, Microsoft only seems interested in furthering their money grab via subscriptions and only seem to implement things which further that goal. PowerApps is a good example - go read the PowerApps forum and look at all the issues or missing features that have existed for years which haven’t been fixed. It’s a joke that basic features are excluded, MS commits to working on them, and then 3 years later, with people asking for updates, you get no response or a response like “Well that feature is already in Product Y, so we don’t want to duplicate it in Product X.” By the way, that feature is printing - companies still need that functionality. Instead, they’re focusing on their CDS backend, for which they can charge customers more and more money.

Did that change? I know it use to auto do it if I didn't keep on top of it. Now it doesn't do it for weeks (and maybe I have to tell it to install). Maybe I made a change I've forgotten (that happens a lot )

One of these windows updates seems to have broken ssh as well for me. They seem to have also broken whatever modern implementation of network neighborhood they had forcing me to \\192.168.blahblah to see other windows 10 PCs. These were things that were working yet eroded away with unplanned updates. Just to name a few recent changes for me...

Besides UI changes in previous operating systems, this is the first in a long long time that continuously annoys me with breaking features. I wouldn't say 10 is as bad as 95 yet but it's on its way.

On my side the only downside is EVERY reboots from updates ends up in unresponsive system. Manual reboot and it's golden... Somewhat annoys me having to reboot twice but given how much issue everyone else have I feel better lol.

make 2 of us at the very least, all was golden one day, next day Windows reports as my BT and/or wifi is there, functioning correctly and/or cannot assign it an IP/Proxy invalid

though not willing to go through the BS of forcing 7 to my x570 ryzen 3200 etc as the actual install to use was pretty painless
if not still BS have to set to metered, have to hunt for this that and everything else, set tiles etc vs standard desktop apps/tiles being THERE
and START MENU not the dual/triple wide eye sore segregation they did for the "start is back" crap show this so far has been (found my 1/2 arse way of mimic my 7 install)

anywho....I want/need my wifi/BT back, thank you MSFT twits...stop mucking with "simple"

allow the users parts to work, keep their internet and computing SAFE from intrusion/backdoor spying
