I won't be buying this at launch then which is a shame. I will wait to see what happens. Maybe down the road they'll release it on Steam? I just read the The Division 2 isn't coming to Steam either, but rather on Epic Launcher. I don't know what is going to happen though in the future... everyone is going to want to open their own storefront so they don't have to pay Steam a cut, but what is going to be the average consumer's breaking point for launchers? I know I am at mine. I got Steam, GOG, UPlay, and Origin. I'm not installing another.

Yeah not liking this "exclusive to" nonsense. Was going to purchase this soon after release. But now i ain't sorry 4A i get the split with EPIC was better but i will be damned if i'm installing 1001 store front/launchers each time a publisher wants their own walled garden. Should have sold on both and let the figures do the talking. 4A you muppets why limit yourselves to ONE store. Could have done multiple and cleared up and made bank. Probably never use EPIC's store tbh. Getting to old for faffing around just liked all my games in one place.
 
I think the real problems is the amount of ill will this shows Epic has to the gaming community. To coerce a developer into taking a game already on Steam, off of it, shows that Epic doesn't give a shit about customers or the community. All they care about is having AAA exclusives and having them now.

They should be working on lining up future games, not poaching existing ones.

I don't disagree with you. But I still stand on my point that I think people here are grossly overestimating how much the average PC gamer cares about this being exclusive to the EGS. Sure it might drive a few handful of people to pirate the game or not buy the game altogether, but once again, the developers are making quite a bit more per copy sold which offsets this. The EGS is already downloaded and installed on millions of computers thanks to Fortnite. So its not like the game won't get exposure; and millions of friends are already on the EGS platform.

I'm not saying this isn't unfortunate - because it is. I'm just saying that the people who think this will adversely affect sales revenue may be wrong. We'll have to wait and see how well these exclusive games (Division 2 and Metro Exodus) do sales wise on the EGS.

Another reason why I argued in another thread that Steam reviews are worthless. Too many entitled idiots complaining about unrelated issues, low quality reviews, and review bombing for pointless reasons such as this.

... or maybe 4A Games & Deep Silver saw this as an opportunity to make a larger profit and took it. Valve isn't giving developers as good of a deal to be blunt. And you're upset about. Perhaps place the blame on Valve, because they're the ones responsible. If they were better Epic's platform wouldn't even be a viable solution and this thread would not exist.

Classic example of a company (Valve) having a near hegemony and letting it rust away while new competition comes in. Will Valve end up like Yahoo? Time will tell I suppose. Personally I hope they turn around in a big way.

Ideally I'd like Valve to get back to making good games. Half Life style games. Mod support. Server browsers. I hate the trend they started with free to play cosmetic money printers like DOTA and TF2 which Epic and many more are emulating. I'd like to see Epic continue to focus on tools for game developers as well. If DOTA/Fornite could die tomorrow I'd be very happy.

I absolutely hate review bombing for unrelated things. It is childish and just makes people lose trust in a platform, not a game.

I think with HL2 it was the thing that game needed Steam and it wasn't like an old skool physical copy (even though these were technically licenses to use the product and you still didn't own a copy). For many it was concerning due to slow internet as I think myself I was still on dialup back then. There weren't any other digital game stores back then either so many folks had similar doubts about longetivity of their investment as no doubt is the case with EPIC store. Ultimately doing this change nearly few weeks before game release after so many folks have been waiting for this game for so long it really just bad business. Like someone commented above, if it was just about profit split, they could have kept it on Steam and bumped the price to compensate. So right now out of $60 Valve makes $18 but with that user also gets a rock solid platform which has been a healthy ecosystem for many years. With EPIC they sell it for $50 so they lose $6 to EPIC which really makes the true difference to the publisher to be just $2. Surely if they sell A LOT this is a big deal but now that hey pissed people off and not going to get any more Steam sales, only time will tell how it will hit them. While I would feel sad for 4A to get hit by bad sales, they kind of deserve to get kicked in the ass for doing this.

I doubt Epic will release numbers and at this stage I doubt I'd trust what they have to say. Also, I wouldn't include Div2 in that simply because there are cheaper ways to buy Div2 through sites that sell ubisoft keys. Off the top of my head, it is 10% cheaper to buy Div2 on GMG or Humble right now than Epic Store and since Ubi requires the game to use Uplay no matter what, what benefit do I have to buy it on Epic store? There is none. At least on Steam I would get various community benefits having it on Steam/Uplay instead of Epic/Uplay or just Uplay.

Dropping the price to $50 is Epic/Deep Silver trying to mollify customers over the last minute screw job, pull out the rug from under you of taking the game off Steam. As others have mentioned before on this topic, I doubt any of these developers will release their games on Steam/GOG etc. in a year at a reduced price. In the end, the exclusive storefront wars benefit the developers/publishers only.

I'd be more understanding if some of these developers like the RebelGalaxy guys would just be honest with why they did it. Just flat our say, yeah we got paid for exclusivity and it greatly helps us on dev costs. Instead they all hem and haw because their contract with Epic likely tells them they can't talk about it at all. I don't need numbers, just be damn honest. They're all talking like this will help gamers in the long run.
 
Deep Silver and 4A Games are hardly saints or virtuous over this. They Alex Jones'd the original Metro 2033 PC release. You can only buy the Redux version; although if you bought the original one you can still download it. Say what you want about Steam, but do you think Epic, Origin, Uplay, or others would keep the original Metro PC release available for download when the Redux version has "superseded" it?

Also, Half-Life 2 made Steam. Too bad Valve stopped making games. No killer "apps" to make you keep using their platform.
 
I'd be thrilled with this competition if these store fronts weren't invariably tied to DRM or used to manage content.

Then end up being more and more bloatware.

Yeah, 60 bucks with a 30 percent cut is less per unit than 50 with a 12 percent cut, but if they sell significantly less units they would overall have less revenue generated.

This is where I'm at, only I have more launchers than you do. I have Steam, GOG, Uplay, Origin, Kartridge and the Bethesda launcher. There is absolutely no chance I'm going to buy the new Metro game from Epic's store. I'm not using Microsoft's store, either. My purchases are already too decentralized.

I'm hoping that some of these launchers go the way of Playfield. Shark Punch attempted to create their own game launcher and it lasted about 18 months before they pulled the plug. Publishers like EA and Ubisoft are big enough to try forcing users to go through their proprietary launcher, but I've started resisting. I only bought games through GOG and Steam in 2018, and I'm holding to that. If that means I miss out on the next Metro or Elder Scrolls or whatever, so be it.

I was one of the people who was very upset about HL2 requiring Steam. My big issue wasn't that a launcher was needed, it was that it required an internet connection to activate. That was a different era and a totally different barrier.

I think there are users that will care that a different gaming client is required, however. People love their iphones because they are simple to use. There are probably even more users that won't know Metro Exodus exists, though. My kids launch games through Steam exclusively, so if a game isn't advertised in that client the odds are low that they know it exists.

Indeed we will have to wait and see. I've had EGS for ages and played many alphas and betas including Unreal Tournament but haven't really bought anything since what, Unreal Tournament 4 or something? This was also back on physical DVD and I later repurchased these on Steam during fire sale just for convenience sake. I personally don't care much for achievements and I in fact I feel they are a menace for gaming but many people like them. I still think they will get hit hard by this decision as it's just bad for their public view just ahead of a big game launch. Having watched the videos I already had some resevations about new installment lacking any and all of the original games moral twists so this all but made me more unsure if I want to keep supporting them. I just don't see this as a good for gamer's tactic regardless of EPIC lower purchase cost which despite all my rage that PC games cost same as console now brings back $50 PC game price. Simply the predatory was of steering gamers to another store is what concerns me the most.
 
They lost themselves a full price sale with this move. I like the Metro series quite a bit so (played the original 6-7 times but the sequel only twice) I'll eventually buy it but splitting it over platforms is annoying enough that I can easily hold off until it's dirt cheap.
 
I'm not a fan of multiple "app stores" - but can't say I blame the developers. That's a lot more money. I wonder how many lost sales this might translate to?
What I mean by that:
1. Some people might not be aware of another store besides Steam.
2. Some people will refuse any client besides Steam.
I currently have Steam, Origin, GOG, and Epic. I see it as a way to get more deals to games I don't have time to play.

I really think that if Epic wanted to win over PC gamers, they should have let the $59 Steam version stay in place, and compete by having the $49 price on the Epic store. To me that would avoid all of the toxic perception of buying a third party game to get your store into the limelight. As of now, I'm close to hating Epic.

Epic basically stole the battle royale genre from PUBG. That's fucked up. They make billions and here we are. Why don't they go fuck up PlayStation or Xbox?

I agree with you. Competition should be about vendor A selling an item competing against vendor B with a similar item. Not vendor A having exclusive ownership rights to something so nobody else can sell it.

No this is worse than console exclusives. we 're talking about steam and running on the same windows 10. not a nintendo and their unique box vs sony's box. pc gamers are running the same system's virtually.

At this point in my life I can trace almost all of this world's evils back to the previous generation of consoles. Exclusivity being one of them. They didn't invent exclusives or anything but traditional studios, such as Epic, have showed us the finger on multiple occasions.

While I agree the platform is the same Epic's launcher doesn't have a Linux variant. I find it a bit odd that Tim Sweeny was going ape over Microsofts store a few years back but still forces us into being reliant on Windows. Killer feature for me on Steam is Valve did the dirty work of emulating the Xbox controller. I can plug in nearly anything and it will translate to the game.

Also, Valves recent work with Proton translates DX calls into Vulkan with minimal performance hit bringing a large portion of the library Linux compatibility. As lazy as Valve is I still see them as the better storefront and am bummed by moves like this.

Pulling a game that was available for preorder on Steam for sometime now and had people who preordered? This is a”fuck you” to Steam? This is a “fuck you for buying our unfinished game on Steam.”

I could care less about the store front choice/wars, but this stunt is something else. After this shit stain I have absolutely no confidence buying anything Metro related.

That said, having played the previous Metro games on Steam I will not be buying this one.

Maybe read the article next time. If you bought it on Steam you get it on Steam. If you want to buy on Steam, but it within the next few hours or wait a year when it will come back on sale on Steam. Of course they're not going to take the money and then pull the product from the digital storefront it was sold on. That is illegal in practically every country across every industry.

I have Uplay, Bethesda, Glyph, Steam, Battlenet, Epic and Amazon games all installed, and I do want to play exodus. If its cheaper on epic (which I log into daily anyway) yay for me and my wallet.

How are you guys not realizing that steam had exculsivitiy for a decade. Entering a market is difficult and competition is good. Epic is attempting to create a competing storefront...

same, think. gonna wait for reviews. The second metro was just ok. Im not desperate to run out and grab this one. Hopefully by exclusive they end up meaning 2 years or something and ill grab it on a $10 sale on steam. Im not a steam fanatic its just that I already have too many clients on my pc. I dont need another one in my face. Also reports about epic store having sideware crap in it concerns me.
 
The issue isn't exclusivity here, or the recent Split Wars, or even the Storefront Complex. That's a whole other set of issues. The problem here is they seemed to have caved to an exclusivity deal after offering it elsewhere. When you've already offered pre-orders on Steam for months, then yank it a couple weeks before release, it tells you one of 2 things.

1.) The Publisher has it's head up it's ass. Which doesn't bode well in regards to future Steam support for existing pre-orders, or even support on EGS for that matter.

2.) They caved to an EGS offer (or maybe just wanted the better cut) last minute to rake in the cash, despite the obvious onus it would put on their fan base to decide whether to stick with Steam or move to EGS. Those ramifications have already been pretty well hashed out in this thread.

While 2 sounds like it's the same as 1, it's actually much worse. It's not like nobody knew EGS existed when pre-orders went live on Steam. If they knew an EGS exclusivity deal was a possibility then the pre-orders on Steam should never have been made available. If they didn't, then this all happened in the last month or two and was signed off as kosher. It's coming to Steam in a year, so maybe they figured the Steam crowd was more likely to wait for a sale anyway. No telling when it comes to 'upper management logic'. Doesn't matter, the whole situation doesn't present well.

If nothing else, it will make people think twice before pre-ordering the next game. While I think that's awesome, it was either never mentioned in the meeting that approved this, or they decided that was fine. I imagine it went something like this.

mumble, grumble, another client, mumble, grrr, more crap to keep updating, more crap that can go wrong. I agree with others, pretty sleazy the way epic pulled this off. I was just waiting till my next check to pre-order. Sure it'll be $10.00 cheaper but I wasn't quite ready yet to go with someone else. Been following Epic stories over the last few months but my biggest concerns are their support. Will the game get its updates like it should. What about cloud saves? I love cloud saves!
