"At worst" it could help attackers [and criminal organizations] create cheats... look at how GTA Online is basically unplayable due to these so-called Mod Menus... it's far more damaging than they're suggesting. Especially to customers

"Riot Games provided its first response to last week's cyberattack on its company network. The company alleges that the attackers have exfiltrated with the source-codes for "League of Legends," "Teamfight Tactics," and a proprietary anti-cheat software that's no longer in use. Riot Games assures all that no game user data was compromised with this attack (particularly passwords or payment-instrument details); and at worst the stolen source code could help the attackers create cheats. The company also received a ransom e-mail from the attackers demanding payment, failing which they threaten to release the source code to public; but Riot said that it does not intend to pay. Since user information isn't compromised, and the games themselves are protected by IP laws globally, there's little reason to pay up."

You think cheats make the game unplayable ????
when you're getting kicked and blocked from sessions constantly and your account is being corrupted and banned by hackers, yea

of course people are being exploited and denied service as we speak which is unplayable.
even having cheats yourself for protection isn't a good option, you basically have to allow MS Defender an exception to inject what it considers a virus and take the risk.
recently there's been Ban Waves impacting people who use cheats but also those just trying to protect themselves against stalkers.

GTA was designed as single player, with multiplayer tacked on. They just made it work as a fun social game, security, anti-cheat, etc. were not the priority as that would require redesigning the entire engine.

LoL was designed as a competitive multiplayer game from the very beginning. Stopping cheating was always a priority.

Not even close to the same thing.

GTA is a security nightmare from a multiplayer perspective and doesn't validate shit that would be literally impossible in most games, it trusts the client for everything

The ways you can cheat in a MOBA are super limited.
Generally the ways you can cheat in a MOBA are limited, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done and that this leak doesn’t possibly open new options that they couldn’t previously make work.

There are also security implications here, what if the code leak lets them find a way to issue remote execution commands to users in the lobby or blah blah blah.

It's pay to win awfulness, you can't even play the game the way it's intended without a rocket shooting UFO spam killing you for 2 hours. I don't see the appeal. If people stopped giving money to that turd, GTA6 would have been released years ago.

Cheats don't exist because of leaks, they exist because people want to cheat. If cheating is getting bad in an online game, that's because nobody is hiring moderators to go around and ban the cheaters. Also, they aren't paying developers to fix their code so cheats don't work. GTAV was hacked long before any leaks. Considering how old GTAV is, there's a lot of cheats.

Successfully playing a game blindfolded, Mario 64 no less......
Skip the blindfold, just unplug the video signal, then give us a call.

I’ll never understand the point of cheating in games.

Sure there's a point. Firstly, it's ego as people that can't improve will do so through cheats. I'm not bad, it's just that I don't have time like some of these losers. The second reason people cheat is for profit. The video I posted are mostly people in Twitch who benefit from their ability to play games professionally. Asmongold got his start from being one of the best Warrior players in World of Warcraft, and Ninja has his start with Halo and then Fortnite. Dream was caught cheating in a Minecraft speed run specifically to become #1 and of course got more popular. So there's plenty of incentive to cheat so long as you don't get caught. Technically everyone who buys micro-transactions are cheating, just not in a way that is against company policy.

For casual games like GTA I think it's mostly just kids that are trolling and think it's funny.

But I would agree it's mostly EGO for competitive games.

Someone with a big EGO plays a game, gets absolutely trashed on by someone that's simply better.
Thinks no one could possibly be that much better than them. "They must be cheating!"
Searches for cheats online and finds some. Falsy thinks because cheats exist it proves they only lost because someone cheated.
Downloads and installs becoming a cheater themself because "everyone is doing it".

Some people are just so full of themslves they can't possibly believe someone is better than them. And these people aren't uncommon.

It was better back in the olden days when in person LAN tournaments were a thing. Because people could see IRL, in person, the reality that yes, someone is this much better than you, and no, they are not cheating. Something much harder to do online when you don't see real people.

I had a lot of fun experiences at LANs seeing people's minds being blown by the reality that they aren't good as they think they are.

Some people consider:
1.) Winning to be fun.
2.) Getting their ego stroked enjoyable (whether justifiably or not).
3.) Getting paid money either directly or indirectly worth their time. Especially if it's easy. Which is also where platforms such as twitch come in.

I mean I get the profit motive. We see that in pro sports as well. I don’t understand why someone would recreationally though.

sharknice explained it. It's a mentality that if someone beat you then they must be cheating, so therefore I'll cheat. It can also be justified from a lack of time to hone their skill. It's also the same thought process that compels people to buy micro-transactions and justify it. Diablo Immortal is a game that's entirely about overpowering your opponents with money. So in a way we encourage players to cheat, but some players will run actual cheats instead of paying for it through the in game cash shop.

The League of Legends source code leak will likely not result in more cheats appearing in the wild. If anything other people might use it to make clones of the game or create ports.

Firstly, wow private servers are open source. No code was stolen. All reverse engineering. This one for example like many are based on ManGOS. The issue with private servers is the use of things like NPC say are done on the server and are technically copyright. Everything else is kinda a guess since Blizzard never released info on how things are done in game. Secondly, no WoW code has ever leaked. Third, League of Legend private servers have been around for some time now, like this one.

So if you're worried that hackers might learn more how League of Legends works to create more hacks that allow players to cheat, I'd say we're long past that point. In this day in age if you wanna stop cheaters you need good anti cheat and especially good moderation.
