Is Horizon 1 or Horizon 2 the better game?
They're both stellar IMO, but I think they complicated FW a bit more than they should have with the weapons and upgrade system. So I kind of prefer the gameplay of the original more, but the sequel has much more story content that is equally interesting and engaging.

You should definitely play the first one before the sequel though if you're interested in the story aspect at all. I think it's free with the PS+ connection and it is patched for PS5 to run at 4k/60 at least.

This game looks tons better visually than the 1st game but the story is like whatever to me.
I spent like 18 hours downloading it off Wifi so it's going to stay.

just like with the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion this will be next-gen only...

"To achieve this grand vision technically and creatively, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus all our efforts on making an incredible experience exclusively for the PlayStation 5 console"

https://blog.playstation.com/2022/1...ues-in-horizon-forbidden-west-burning-shores/

In other words: "The PS5 has finally sold enough and has enough stock that Sony is no longer forcing us to support both consoles".

I appreciate the idea of only supporting next-gen consoles but I also think it's a bit shady that the base game supports older gen systems but the DLC only supports next-gen

hopefully this means a Forbidden West Complete Edition is not too far away on PC...maybe 6-12 months

At least the PS4 -> PS5 upgrade for H:FW is free, so... *shrug*

The first ~1 hour didn't really hook me when I finally got my PS5 earlier this year, but I finally made my way back to the game this week.

Now 14 hours in, I'm... pretty disappointed.

Horizon Zero Dawn (on PC) was by far one of my favorite games I played in 2020. At 60 hours played, nothing other than Path of Exile or Destiny 2 came even close to time spent playing. But this game? Ugh. I have three major gripes:
  1. It suffers from "AC Valhalla Syndrome".
    • WAY too much empty side content. The game has literally a dozen different types of side quests (not to be confused with the 1 of 12 that is titled "side quests"). Hell, one of them is even called "errands"! I'm probably burnt out on the whole open world BS after playing Spider Man, GoW Ragnarok, and Ghost of Tsushima this year... but this game takes the cake by far. The majority of the characters and content involved in all of the side content are simply boring.
  2. Playing on controller SUCKS.
    • Aiming with a controller is absolutely brutal in this game. The core combat mechanic of the game is making precise shots at enemy weak points. The only aim assist that is offered is the "bullet magnetism" type. Given the type of ranged combat in the game, I don't see how they could have implemented traditional "reticle stickiness" aim assist. But regardless, playing this with a controller after playing the first game with a mouse is absolute misery.
  3. The game really should have been called Horizon Forbidden Woke.
    • This should be very self explanatory for anyone who has played the game, or watched a couple YouTube videos about it.

The side quests are completely optional though, so I don't see how they would be a negative if you just want to mainline the story still. They're there for anyone (like me) who enjoys and reason to keep exploring the world and enjoy the extra combat that comes with it. As someone who completed every single side quest in HZD before competing the main mission and wanted more before finishing the game, I appreciated it. Though I definitely didn't do that this time with how many there are, but I did complete every one after finishing the story and then started a NG+ on the hardest difficulty just like I did on HZD.

I played HZD on both PS4 and then PC when it launched. I preferred playing it on PC with controller still (as I do most other 3rd person action/adventure games) 🤷‍♂️. Using the slo-mo abilities is crucial though. In the original game they had the skill where jumping and aiming was always in slo-mo, so you could cheese any encounter with that skill. But they fixed that in FW (as they should have). But I get that some people have controller handicaps, as I see many other PC-centric players have after being so acclimated to KB&M.

I think I remember seeing one seemingly trans person in the game, but don't remember them specifying. And there's the gay relationship between Elizabeth and Tilda. What else was woke about it? I don't like it either, but pretty mild relative to most media these days, I think.

I'm hearing a lot of people on other forums that loved Zero Dawn say that Forbidden West is really disappointing...outside of the graphics the gameplay is not as good- far too much inventory management and boring quests...I still plan on playing it on PC but it doesn't seem like the sequel lives up to the original

I think I'd agree that it's not quite as good as the first one, mostly because of how much they tried to squeeze into this one in terms of weapons and gameplay modifiers. I also didn't care for how they changed how the weaves and coils work in this game. They completely removed stealth weaves sans an outfit or two where you have to upgrade them to unlock the weave, so you can't find multiple ones to stack and be virtually invisible like you could in HZD.

But overall I thought the outfit and weapons were overly convoluted compared to the original. So I hope the simplify it a bit again on the next one. Since they're a core gameplay element, that weighs against it more than most of the other graphical and animation improvements that they made on the game, which I think generally degraded its reception relative to the first game.

I hate the way the different types of elemental weapons worked. In the first game, it was fun swapping the different weapon types to hurt specific targets and/or enemies. In the sequel, it simply doesn't work very well. Plus, upgrading was grindy as hell and there were way, way too many weapons. Like about 10x as many as were actually needed. Everything in Forbidden West felt like it was designed to be a time sink. Like they were gunning to have the highest "# of Hours Spent Playing This Game" possible. I tried to be a completionist for the first 30-40% of the game and then just got tired of everything and blew through the rest.

in the first game each robot had a particular weakness to fire, frost etc and you would need to switch out the arrows based on the enemy type...so you're saying that it doesn't work like that in Forbidden West?...the amount of weapons doesn't bother me as you're only going to use the ones that you like the best

Say an enemy is weak against poison. You whip out your crappy poison weapon and spam poison arrows or whatever until the status effect bar fills up. This feels like you're fighting a rhinoceros with a sling shot, but now they're 'status effected' and seem to take additional damage from all sources. Now swap back to your normal bow that does more damage and unload on weak points. When status effect wears off, swap back and repeat.
Hell, I got away with just using my hunter bow and not bothering with elemental effects for at least half the game.
You can also get away with basically zero weapon variety. Other than futilely using a tripcaster against an enemy that was supposedly weak against shock damage (because I had no shock bows), I played the entire damn game using nothing but an assortment of hunter bows, and one sharpshooter bow. Maybe you could do similar in HZD, but I remember being compelled to switch up the weapon types quite a bit in that game.

wasn't that how the first game worked as well?...status effect arrows and then switch back to pure damage arrows

Try using the bomb slingshot with the appropriate status effect, then switch to the explosive spears.

Brings everything and anything to its knees quick.

Pairing the right stuff up makes it easy to dominate all of the machines.

After I got the ability to hack the robots in the first one that's what I did for 98% of the enemies. Can you still play that way in the sequel?

Same lol. From what i remember, it's alot harder to cheese the boss fights like that. But you can do alot of the game by stealthing around and overpowering.

hacking them is not fun...I would do that once in awhile just as a change of pace in the first game but it was much more fun using melee or arrows to target their weak points

I'm old and not super great at video games at all, and was really bad at hzd because i hadn't played console in a while. Still had a great time farting around with ways to hack machines and make the boss fights easy. Was fun for me sneaking around and cheating some of the big machines in the world. I'm weird though.

I had more fun hacking them, but that's just me.

Game is much better than the original. The people who don't like it are just inept at fighting bosses because they are slightly tougher than before and you don't get materials piling up like in the original. Here you actually have to put in the work. On the side quests, they are much more involved than before and not collectathons. I liked them better than first one as well. In every aspect the game works better. Not sure what the issue is with people.

Honestly I though the bosses and everything were easier then the first game but I agree the 2nd build upon the 1st and is better in almost every way.

PS5 Creators: How Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores will harness the power of PS5

The new expansion is a PS5 exclusive...so, how is Guerrilla specifically harnessing the power of the PS5 for this update?...it isn’t just the environment getting a boost...Guerrilla is also hyping a particularly large battle that wouldn’t be possible on last-gen hardware

“Another notable [PS5-pushing feature] is a particular battle scene that requires a LOT of memory and processing power! To achieve this grand vision both technically and creatively, we definitely were thankful for the many advantages that the PS5 hardware brings”...

Actor Lance Reddick has past away at age 60. He was an accomplished actor in many movies and played Sylens in both Horizon games. He'll be greatly missed. Rest in peace.

I think PS nailed it by offering the game on PS+. I bought the physical copy and sold it after i was done, but now i can play the expansion, not to mention anyone that's just now playing the game for the first time with their subscription. Hope to see more of this in the future.

Probably next year, at the earliest. Sounds like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will be the next PS5 title that hits PC, assuming the rumors are right. I'd love to get Demon's Souls after that or Ghosts of Tsushima.

We get it.. you're in the PCMR. It's most of your posts in this thread and subforum outside of your copy/paste articles and videos, starting with your first post in this thread sans OP. 🙄

I don't get the infatuation with a single platform. If you like games, buy whatever enables you to play them. High end PC hardware never spoiled consoles for me thankfully.

Anyways, I gotta finish up my NG+ on Ultra Hard on this in preparation for the DLC. If anything just to refresh on the strats I was using and refresh myself on the controls. Been a lot of other good games keeping me busy so far the past 6 months (Dead Space recently and now RE4).

I don't care about the platform as long as it allows me to play with KB+Mouse.

I'm not sure what's got you so irritated this morning but I'll respond...I'm a PC gamer but I don't have any issues with a PS5...they have some amazing exclusives...I actually bought a PS4 specifically to play Bloodborne but ever since Sony started porting their games to PC it makes buying a PS much less of a need for me...same with an Xbox where all their 'exclusives' are on PC

as far as copy/paste postings, you do the same as well from Digital Foundry and other sources...if an article/video is interesting then it doesn't matter where it comes from...and most of your posts are from the Console Peasant Race...again, why does it matter which platform someone prefers?...PC offers the best overall experience as far as graphics, mods etc...even the Sony PC ports are the definitive experience- games like Returnal and Spider-Man Miles Morales offer ray-tracing features not available on the PS5 (Spider-Man Remastered also offers higher quality RT)

I don't think anyone who's thinking impartially can dispute that PC offers the best experience...the DualSense and the fact that you can play the game 1 year+ sooner is the only advantage to a PS5...I would buy a PS5 if Sony stopped porting their games to PC- Demon's Souls is probably the game I most want to play right now...don't get so butthurt if someone prefers one platform over another

I loved Horizon Zero Dawn on PC which is the reason why I'm really looking forward to playing Forbidden West...the game is more important then which platform it's on

I don't care about the copy/pasting of articles and videos, it was only to emphasize when you're not doing that, it's usually to post about if/when it's coming to PC and not actually discussing the content of the game as the rest of us are. You're not quite as bad in this thread, but I've seen you post the same thing in all the other PS exclusive game threads multiple times.

I buy many of these timed exclusives on both platforms, if only to support these awesome single player games and as an excuse to play them again. With most of these games running at 60+ FPS on console now, the game isn't meaningfully better on PC anymore, even with added RT effects and such. Unless you're putting them side by side, it's pretty much the same exact experience I had on console, just a bit smoother and with the extra FoV since I run 120hz ultrawide on PC. At least when the game isn't crashing like HZD did a lot when it first launched on PC and took several weeks to get stable. Stuff like that and shader compilation studders that plague many modern PC releases are why I'm glad I don't wait to play on PC half the time as well.

I don't disagree that the PC ports are the best "definitive edition" (words you've used) versions or whatever, or blame you for waiting for it and not buying other consoles if you don't have to. I just wanted to point out that you keep repeating this in these threads. I'm sorry if I came off irritated about it. 🙃

I rarely post in the console gaming specific threads as I don't own the game plus I want to avoid spoilers...but you really overreacted...my post what not meant as a 'PC Master Race' post as you mentioned...it was literally because I'm looking forward to the PC release as I enjoyed the first game...that's all it meant

the game discussion has pretty much died for this game so I didn't think posting about the PC release at this point would get you so hot and bothered (discussion will start up again once the DLC hits)...it's obvious I'm a fan of the PS games like Demon's Souls, Ghost of Tsushima, Forbidden West etc otherwise I wouldn't care if it was coming to PC
