Gaming services going down seems like a holiday tradition at this point. I guess there is always Netflix to fall back on.

While acknowledging the publicity that such attacks garner for hacking groups, he claimed that the ultimate aim is to force companies like Microsoft, Sony and Valve to do more to stop them. "We will be hitting them because we are trying to make services like them [prevent] these sort of attacks, so they get stronger," he said. "Anyone with a $5 booter can take down Xbox if they have the right IP."

How about they fuck off and let me pay the games I paid for on steam?

I have an idea that will fit into their philosophy, I'll keep beating them with a bat until they learn how to do more to stop it and it'll make them stronger.

I'd like to hold down the person that said that and break off a broom handle off in their ass... You know, so they would be motivated to get stronger and I couldn't hold them down to do that anymore. See its just me doing them a favor, I'm such a nice guy!

While it is terrible that they do this for the sake of doing it rather than putting their efforts towards something useful, the fact is that the system is broken in that it's so easy to do. This should be a wake up call that networks are too fragile and can be easily taken down.

The, "I am only hurting/inconveniencing you to put pressure on them to do x", philosophy only works if we blame them and not the people actually hurting/inconveniencing us.
It will go like this. Take it down and you only hurt the gamers. The gamers are going to blame the dicks that knocked them offline, not Valve/MS/Sony. Then Valve/MS/Sony are going to come out and claim they are doing something to stop this sort of thing. And they will, it will not be much, it may not address the "problem" at all, but it will be just enough to say they did something. The gamers are going to continue to blame the dicks that knocked them off line. The dick group responsible will possibly get caught. People that do this sort of thing just can't seem to resist the urge to brag. Then jail time. And for what? Nothing really..
I just don't get their reasoning.

More likely, the servers crash due to the influx of activity during Christmas and they simply take credit for it.

I don't really take their justifications seriously, I think it's all part of their trolling. They know they're just being douchebags, and by trying to justifying it, they're giving their trolling hooks barbs.

These types of "hacks" never accomplish anything. All they do is piss off some people for a day or two and then everybody forgets about it.

So if Steam goes down does that mean you can't even play games offline?

I believe you can disable your internet connection and Steam will give you the option of starting in offline mode. You have full access to your game library in offline mode (ones that are already installed of course).

This is the most asinine logic ever. As far as I'm know, while these attacks are seemingly easy to do, you'd think they'd be endemic to services like Steam etc. However, these services don't seem to come under routine attack. Sometimes, its just down to you doing your part and not being an asshole. Most people can do a lot of stupid shit, but that's usually when rational thoughts take over. Of course, there's still the minority like this d-bag.

just griefers mind them no head and it will piss them off more they want attention so tell to drop dead or to go pound sand and watch them forth at the mouth... if some one had raised these kids right they would never have become so warped to target people relaxing and having fun during the holidays. personally I think we a griefer hunting season were a month before a major holiday we post free hugs to every waz prek and griefer hangout site and tell them to these sites and have consolers who get to psycho anaylst them for a week so that they never attack anyone for risk of dealing with some one like that... grin.

How can they stop a DDOS? That's like saying a 5 lane highway is unacceptable, because if I purposefully try to cram 10,000 cars through in 2 minutes it gets congested.

DDOS is artificial.

Fuck these people. That's all there is to it.

I think they should put their money where their mouths are if they TRULY believe this ... steal money from the bank of their choice to "make their security stronger" ... explain to judge and police why they don't need some quality prison time because of their selfless activities ;)

Better ingres filtering, and higher redundancy is needed for these services -- that much I'll agree with, but that is not on Steam, Microsoft, Playstation, or any of those companies, that is on the content distribution networks they pay 95th percentile bandwidth fees to. Denial of service is just typically met with a nullroute, and let run its course, and that is not the best practice, though it is the most widely used. Beefier bordercores able to tarpit, with extra route metrics for normal pps with actual network operations and engineers onsite at major peerage providers to shut it down at the source is best practice.

Don't even give them the courtesy by putting the word "hack" in quotations. Just call them what they are: script kiddies. Even better, don't even acknowledge their existence. That way you're not feeding the troll.

Anyone having issues with Steam? Logged into my account and noticed something weird. Everything was in Spanish. I went on the account info and realized I was logged into someone else's account. Their card info and PayPal were right there in plain sight.

I logged out and logged back in after a few minutes. Seems to be working fine now.

So it logs in as someone else. It just shows the last bit of info for the wallet, nothing useable to steal. Worst case scenario, someone bought a game for you. Hopefully if that happens, its a good game and not a piece of shit.

Even better.. arrest them and actually punish them instead of allowing "oh, but he has autism" excuses for a slap on the wrist. Yeah, I'm looking at you, UK.

Looks like the entire Steam network is hosed right now: http://www.neowin.net/news/steam-down-on-christmas-day-amid-fears-of-ddos-attack

On a community-run Twitter account surrounding Valve, they retweeted a statement from SteamDB telling concerned users that it is a caching issue:

Valve is having caching issues allowing users to view things such as account information of other users. Don't use Store for now.

As a precaution, Valve has now disabled access to the Steam Store and community features, to try and limit the amount of personal information that has been freely available. When visiting these areas, you will now be presented with an error such as "An error occurred while processing your request.".

Say what?

I log in to the Steam store, instead it logs me in as scojer, giving me complete access to your Steam account, bypassing Steam Guard entirely. We're not talking about simply displaying other peoples information, individuals are being given full access to other people's Steam accounts. This incident is so severe, Valve has taken down the Steam Store on Christmas day.

It is beyond time people realize that Valve gives no fucks when it comes to customer service, security and stability of their platform. Their bug bounties consist of TF2 hats, devs who report vulnerabilities through the proper channels get ignored for months until they disclose them, at which point Valve bans their Steam account.

What about the most recent incident of Valve's lackluster security practices? Wherein it was possible to reset the password of any Steam account by simply....not entering a password! Many prominent streamers had their accounts stolen via this incompetent oversight by Valve. But don't worry, all you had to do to recover it was contact Steam support, and wait a month or so while their outsourced and equally incompetent support team cleared things up for you.

Valve's platform is constantly going down and getting hacked. Their forums have been hacked previously. Glaring vulnerabilities crop up again and again. Valve's customer service is outsourced and unresponsive These are issues that have existed for years.

Valve has a captive audience of mindless apologists who refuse to hold their feet to the fire. How many more incidents will we need before people stop worshipping the CEO of as a God and actually demand Valve get it's act together?

f you know you're already logged in, do NOT visit any Steam Community or Steam Store URL. Playing games online should be fine. It'll also prevent anybody else from logging into your account via desktop client.

Do NOT unlink PayPal, do NOT remove credit card info from Steam's websites. You may choose to do that on external websites instead.

Explanation according to Steam DB:

Valve is having caching issues, allowing users to view things such as account information of other users.

This is also why the Steam website has been displaying in different languages.

Hey! Did you say something?! I can't hear you over these crazy prices I get from Steam every week on some of my favorite games! Plus my library is so large it's blocking out the sun! I gotta get back to you! Wolfenstein is 85% off!

I think everyone gets it man. This is bad. They fucked up. Enlighten us what should we do though? Stop shopping there? Protest? I know! #gamerslivesmatter!

it does seem like transparency and communication with steam customers is the big thing
