GTX 970 supporting 3x 4k @60hz?

Not for gaming, just for desktop use.



I have one of these:

MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GD5T OC Video Card


On Newegg ebay:

I know it can support one 4k@60hz with chroma 4:4:4 on the HDMI port. I assume I need a display port to HDMI 2.0 for the next 4k monitor.

However, how do I hook up a third? Is it possible or do I need to upgrade / add a second card?

I think you're limited to 30hz on the DVI port with the connectors on that card.

Not officially. In dual-link mode, DVI has roughly the same bandwidth as HDMI 1.4. The only problem would be finding a 4k display with a DVI input that supports 4k. As in, zero.

The math is simple. Dual-Link DVI = 144Hz 1080p.
4k resolution = 4x as many pixels as 1080p, so refresh rate would be 144/4 = 36 Hz.

And, no DVI to HDMI converter supports beyond 1080p@60hz. It's single-link to single-link only.

I would just shop around for a GTX 970 cards with more ports. Those early 970 using 2xDVI, 1 HDMI and 1DP were just cheap re-used Kepler backplates. Better-built custom cards like this one had the more standard set of ports I expect from Maxwell.

Even the REFERENCE DESIGN GTX 980 has this same set of four advanced ports:

So you can see why I was confused about where the ports had gone :D

Such a shame :(. my gtx970 is ghetto version I suppose.


I was actually thinking of either (#1) selling it (#2) buying a 950ti when it goes on sale again and just using both (I am using this PC mainly for GPU based 3D renderers, I will have to investigate how it scales. (#3) add another 970 (#4) add gtx 1070/1080/1060






I am a big fan of value for performance so I might go for the 950TI since gaming is not my main concern, mostly more monitors + 3d rendering like cycles / octane.

Depending on what the rest of your setup is, you could run a 3rd 4k display off the IGP on newer Intel CPU's.
 
MSI's 970 is the only version of 970 that didn't come with 3 DP/1 HDMI setup, every other version came with it.

lol that's so sad, considering I thought I was finally going with a better manufacturer and not going super cheap with some random brand ;P
 
The 1050 Ti I've seen with more than 2 4k monitor ports start at $150 on Newegg. And I don't recall any of the vanilla 1050 cards having more than two.

Can you link the model you were thinking of buying, so I can double check?
 
I have a sapphire Tri - X R9-280 and I bought a dp to HDMI 2.0 connector and it push's 60Hz 4K desktop and gaming.. the only gaming I do is World of Tanks and here is the card pushing 60Hz 4K World of Tanks on a stock running FX 6300 /8Gb of ram ..
