If you need cloud storage, Google Drive's new rates aren't too bad at all.

Google Drive has been the cloud repository of choice for many people since it launched back in 2012, and now the company is dropping prices to make it even more attractive. While users will still get 15GB for free, the 100GB package now costs $1.99 a month, down from $4.99. What's more, the 1TB option has received more than a 50 percent price cut: it now costs $9.99 per month, a big drop from its previous rate of $49.99.

Cheap... I have a free account, but have barely used it (I primarily use Dropbox). Are there really any reasons to continue using Dropbox now that the price gap is this large? ($1.99/mo vs $8.25/mo) It's obviously "only" $6/mo, but not sure I am getting any benefit from that $6.

They need more plan options. I only need about 150GB of space. I would gladly pay for a 200GB option to backup my pictures and music for $2.99. That is a fair price for peace of mind for me. $10.00 for 1TB just isn't worth it for me.

I have had the free version of Google Drive and I actually prefer its service to dropbox. I think there are still some things that dropbox offers that might be worth it to some customers, but I would say not for the average user at that price difference.

Yes, you can set it up to automatically synch. It works well.

Yes, you can set it up to automatically synch. It works well.

Dropbox is going to have to drop prices soon, or this will hurt. Google is clearly leveraging their massive datacenters.

I think the only one capable of competing with Google on a server scale is going to be the NSA.

The prices are very enticing though Google Drive's IOS app is horrid, lacks security, and more apps integrate with Dropbox than Google. I really like how Dropbox auto-uploads my photos that I take on my iPhone. I don't see Google doing that and I'd have to rely on iCloud which is another cloud storage service I'd have to use.

The cut is different for each tier.

I don't know there are several other companies that have large caches of servers too, such as Microsoft and Amazon.

It must have become a lot more cost effective for Google to search through all your stuff. They must have outsourced that job to Madagascar or something where the labor is less expensive. I'm going to upload everything I care about to the Google so the All Seeing Eye can dig through it and figure out how many cats I own and what litter and food they use and which neighbors I'm having an affair with.
