I agree with everyone calling this GOTY or a GOTY contender. I liked it even more than Elden Ring, but both are pretty close. Ragnarok gets the nod over ER solely because I have a preference for story heavy titles.

I’m really excited to see where they go with the franchise after this, especially given the ending.

With Kratos’ story basically done and him happy finally I don’t really think they can center another game around him, unless they have him need to chase after Atreus. There are a few places they can take Atreus but I hope the next stop is Egypt. I’d love to see these devs tackle the Egyptian pantheon.

/sigh idk I think I am done with gaming. I can't get into it. Three weeks later and still haven't beaten it. The game is great I just don't have any desire to play games anymore. I been watching more and more videos on YouTube instead. Pretty much spoiled most the game already.
Take a break for a few years you've clearly played too much. I took like 4-5 years off then just picked what I felt I would enjoy the most. The older you get the less enjoyable things you did frequently become, it's a known psychological phenomena.

I think I reached my midlife crisis. I just don't find anything enjoyable anymore.

Starting to get back into this. Seems pretty linear this time around but I am only on chapter 3.

I finally completed "The Crater" area and I have a theory that it was probably planned as DLC at some point. It's a really neat area, but it's so separate and different from everything else. It has a new type of currency, new gear, and like 15 sub-plots, too. I'd just about guarantee that was going to be additional content and they just decided to too it into the main game. At that point, they scattered a few normal things (gravestones and rifts) to even things out. Either way, it has also probably the best part of the game so far.

I thought I was going to run off on a little side quest to help that guy but it turned out to be at least three hours of me clearing the area. I thought it was really strange to be that far in the game and have an area of that size appear.

On the opposite side of the coin, the Muspelheim trials are absolutely awful. They aren't necessarily even that tough, they're just tedious...and you have to complete them dozens of times. I blew through the original set of 9 and then set the difficulty as low as it would go since the game felt I needed to repeat them at least 6 more times each. Luckily with things set to easy, it only took maybe 30-45 minutes to get through everything. I didn't like most of the trials in the first game, but they were light years better than these. Even though it was tedious too, I liked the idea of the mist zone. It might've been better if the game didn't want you to repeat it like 20 times. I'm all for replay value, but repeating things over and over isn't my idea of a good approach to it.

I managed to complete the game and did all the extra stuff. I really liked the final areas and encounters and I appreciate the "post game" stuff, too. Very well done. The two optional post-game boss encounters...not so much. They're prime examples of what I don't like about the GOW optional bosses. They're spongy to the point that normal attacks basically do no damage. You're just unloading every special you have and then running for your life and playing rock/paper/scissors until your specials recharge. I'm sure there are exploitive builds that change that dynamic, but the fights are otherwise just a pain in the ass.

I'd say the game is definitely a solid A and is the 2nd best game I played this year (behind Elden Ring) overall. The story was well done, 90% of the game was terrific, and even the things I didn't care for were never that bad. It'll be very interesting to see where the series goes next and when. They obviously set things up for more content, but I don't see them rushing anything.

End game:

Sindri. Wow. Totally unhinged and wrecked with grief, rage, and who knows what else. This is absolutely tragic and it's one of the numerous plot lines I am eager to pick up on in the future. Brok will be missed. Blunt and always good for a chuckle.

I looked around and figured I'd see if I missed anything major. I was mostly just using the completion % and item collection list on the maps. Looks like I missed a few optional fights and items. Nothing noteworthy, though. Interestingly enough, I don't think any of the end-game items were all that great in terms of stats/abilities. Powered-up versions of earlier items were better, IMO. Not that it matters much since there's no NG+ yet. They added that mode to the original game after the fact, so I suspect we'll see that again for this one. Pretty sure I won't be fighting the Berserkers and such again. They're admirably challenging, but I dislike the linear nature of those fights. Making that same style of fight even tougher sounds like a hard pass. Either that or I'll just set 'em to super easy just to see if there are new drops.

Game Awards 2022: Ragnarok won a lot of awards but Elden Ring took home arguably the night's 2 biggest awards- Best Direction and Game of the Year

Ragnarok was certainly no God of War 2018, but the fact that they lost to Elden Ring for GotY is absolutely criminal.

I still don't understand what people find appealing about these rebooted GoW games.
The movement is sluggish, the storyline is boring, and the gameplay is nothing at all like the prior games - instead of fast-paced combos we get some generic combat loop which again feels unresponsive and like wading through a swamp. Yawn. To each their own though.

I can't imagine they'll go back to the old format after the success of the last two games. I liked the older games, but I definitely prefer the newer ones. Old school combat was mostly mashy and finding a combo that you could spam that wouldn't be interrupted. IMO the best thing about the older games was the sheer scope of the world. Everything was gigantic and felt very epic. The newer games don't really have anything like that and are more of just a sprawling world. I would appreciate if they'd go a little bigger, but I dunno if it fits the Norse setting. Maybe they can take a hard left and push things toward Rome?

There's an area with an object from
the sand kingdom so if they don't go to Egypt next then I'd be surprised

Sindri's actor deserves an award, Holy shit did he nail it.

My only gripe with the end of the game:
was the ending. Freyr is holding off Ragnarok, then screen flashes white, then the battle is over. Kratos has fought Titans just as big as Ragnarok. Kinda sucks we didn't get to stop him.

I'm definitely down for a NG+ run. I'll just skip (or set things to super easy) all the optional boss fights and have a blast.

I'm clearing out all optional tasks now, so about 6 months is good enough timespan to play it again.

*Edit* 63 hours 22 minutes and I got the platinum.

Sucks that beating the game on the hardest difficulty doesn't earn a trophy... Turned it to easy after clearing the story and it was crazy how easy it is in comparison.

Game is absolutely dope. On chapter 13 and doing as many sides as possible. The game is just too good. I start playing it and hours go by just like that. Sleeping very late because of it. Want to finish it off. Story is sooo good and I am still intrigued about what will happen next.

I spent all day doing crater side quests. Still not 100% done though. Too many things still left to do. Game is phenomenal.

And it’s finished. Now onto the side missions and post main game content. Wonderful game and a solid 10/10 from me.
