BTW, guys, how are you finding cross-server DF parties? Haven't yet really started to do dungeons and forums are filled with the stories of "rush, rush, rush you noob" speed parties, and people say that it's better to get the party via chat, than get DF rushers.

I'm the tank. They can try to rush if they want, but they don't get very far. We move at the speed of me.

I did each dungeon as I unlocked it as I leveled up and used DF. For the most part it was fine. Once you hit 50 it changes a lot. If you run 50 dungeons, yes people will speed run it which makes sense because trash mobs don't drop gil/loot (outside of the random crafting item here and there), take awhile to kill, and your equipment is taking durability hits doing it so you essentially waste time and gil for no reason. I've also had a lot more bad experiences with trashy players in 50 dungeons then in the rest. Using DF for Amdapoor Keep is probably not a good idea, that dungeon is a gear check mostly and will be extremely frustrating to do if you don't have a solid group and is better to get a party through chat instead.

The thing I disliked the most was the people who speed run both the 50 dungeons that are the last 2 parts of the storyline. There are lots of cut scenes and if you watch them most the group will be way ahead where you are or keep complaining you need to skip them and just watch them in the inn (you can watch all the storyline cut scenes in an inn room iirc).

Yea in the Inn room there's a "journal" on a table where you can see all the game cutscenes/story events.

Still if it's someones first time they should let them watch it.

Thanks very much for all the info. I'll keep this in mind. Could you tell me about when I'll be able to 1) Ride mounts. I got the Coeurl mount from the Collector's Edition, but it went to my menus and doesn't seem to be usable. Likewise, the Behemoth Barding for a Chocobo. Is this something else that is part of the main quest to unlock as well? Where can one find other mounts to buy/win etc...?

2.) Own my own Chocobo. At 10 I was able to pick up the "rented" Chocobos or the "auto path" ones, but nothing about my own as of yet, which I assume is what the Behemoth Barding from the CE is equipped upon. I hear these come from the main quest somehow. However, I hear that your chocobo actually can fight beside you and levels up of its own accord - but it takes FOREVER to do so, judging by comments. Also, said chocobo has its own talents/spec and you have to decide if you want it to basically heal, tank, or DPS? Some say these are not able to be reset either - is this the truth, or is there an item somewhere that will allow you to respec your chocobo? Finally, can you only have your chocobo fighting/leveling up while you are solo? If not, do they take "a space" in groups? For instance, if my girlfriend and I are the only 2 in the party, if we both summon our chocobos to level them up in battle, they will be treated like 3rd and 4th party members? Can they be used in Duties/'Levs/Dungeons too, or just the mainland?

Thanks again, this is very helpful.

You get to ride mounts at level 20 as long as you do the main story quest line. Naturally this includes your collector's edition mount. I haven't gotten around to fighting them as I just started that quest line today. I do know that they can't come to dungeons with you.

Are you in fullscreen mode?

OSD only shows in fullscreen for me, windowed or borderless windowed doesn't show.

Doh, was in borderless windowed. All fixed now, thanks.

Just ran Stone Vigil for the first time. For the most part I have enjoyed the dungeons and they keep getting better the higher they go. I haven't run one that I haven't liked yet.

As for the chocobo, it does take a while to level. You cannot bring it out during leves, or instances. I don't believe there is a way to reset your chocobo points, but I don't know if there is anything stopping you from buying another chocobo from your grand company and levelling it again.

You get your mount after you join a grand company (which you'll get through a level 20'ish main story questline)

Once you pick a grand company to join you have to obtain 2000 grand company seals (which can be obtained through a hunting log, quests for that GC, or the easiest/best way, Fates). Fates will start to give you grand company seals once you Join a GC and are the easiest way to level up in your GC and purchase items from it.

Just follow your main storyline and keep going , you can't miss it.

Once you unlock your chocobo you can then use the barding you got from the CE by clicking on the little chocobo icon that's just above your characters name in the character menu (push c).

You also can use your other mount once you unlock your chocobo.

The chocobo fighting you will unlock around level 30 IIRC (I haven't got that far yet).

As far as other mounts go, there are currently two other mounts in the game that you can obtain, one being the Unicorn mount which is a job mount that is given to White Mages (but once you unlock it you can use it on your character period, even if you are playing as another class).

The other mount , the Magitech mount, is obtained from completing the main storyline.

There's also a mount players will get access too soon if you subscrible for 90 days, the Ariman (if you purchase a 90 day sub once the free month is up you get the veteran rewards then, you do not have to wait until the 90 days are up).

Started a healer today... went into that 15 level dungeon, where you have to sleep the turtle. Wiping in that dungeon did not let me keep high opinion about some players.

First it was DPS who stood in aoe of boss and two adds, and he was oneshotted when those 3 AoEs fired at same time. Then there was a tank, with mentality of a chestnut, who thought "boss, must kill", and didn't bother reading that you have to guide boss into herbs fumes to sleep him. Me and the other DPS tried to explain that, but he didn't listen. He killed boss, auto failure.

If this is lev 15 dungeon, I'm kinda scared of what's happening next :D

I didn't know what I was signing up for originally (picked Gladiator simply because I wanted sword and shield) and had no idea I would have to tank, but I'm loving it. You're essentially controlling the fight.

Yes and no. I have had several issues with SLI. Random times the drivers will stop responding. I also cant alt-tab sometimes and it locks up my whole pc.

Trying out the 320.49 drivers...see if I can get something stable

SLI works fine for me, but I'm running Win7 and there may be some issues with it and Win8, though I dont think we've been able to fully test that yet.

The physical ver I ordered several weeks back just arrived, so I got a spare pre-order version game key (PC) if you're interested.

So lemme get this straight, there are now the rushers aka noob callers and people bitching about wiping because the tank isn't keeping up? sigh its Wrath of the Lich King all over again, guess i may not pickup playing again after taking a week or so off. I had hoped that WoW tyoe behavior wasn't gonna seep into this game but it has, guess i may not play this game after all, im too old to deal with this kind of behavior in a game,

Think I'm going to uninstall the game...

A. Not really casual because you pay for it

B. Lack of cool spells and combos

C. when it's dark outside it's too dark..

d. Spend too much time playing it =)

e. Don't want to pay a fee just to keep my character active

It is pretty casual...but yeah, you do have to pay for, that shouldn't be a reason to classify a game as not casual though. Not sure how many spells you really need...? Turn up the brightness. I can sympathize a tad on 'd.' I suppose.

Not sure about the last one, as I didn't really know you had to keep paying to keep him "active".

Does that mean that once we stop paying the character explodes into the abyss?

You should have known all this coming into the game? Did you think they were going to magically just go F2P within a week of launch?

Ill agree about playing too much though. The game is incredible. First MMO Ive found in a while that has kept my interest. Shit, my crafting/gathering classes are my highest leveled classes atm.

Should def give it a few more weeks. After the initial free trial, most of the baddies get weeded out. As with any game you'll still have them around but not as bad.

You could also try getting into a good FC or creating a static group with friends. Then you wont have to worry about a PUG.

Yep and this is why i dont play multiplayer FPS games, i like to enjoy my games not listen to some little dbag mouth breather go on a tirade about what he would like to do to my mother and question both my sexual preference and religious preferences. Its bad enough this happens but when people say ignore it then it becomes socially acceptable to be a dbag then society and humanity fail.

My FC got access to The Binding Coil of Bahamut now, an instance of 5 stages and the only endgame content ARR has at the moment. Its pretty hard but we practice every day.

I never used the Duty Finder so I can't comment on it but I heard horrible stories. To all the new players of you I can only suggest to join a good FC and stick together to get stuff done.
If you happen to be on Excalibur and play early (european times) send me a PM if you need help with anything ingame.

I can't imagine how you are in IRL... lol.

Since when was ignoring something making it socially acceptable?

Anyways, game is awesome and you shouldn't let some trolls ruin that experience for you.

It seems there is a new live event - the Moonfire Faire! http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/special/Moonfire_Faire_2013/

So far, I'm a little underwhelmed I have to say. I don't object to the principle, where these scantily clad (of both genders) characters talk about putting an end to Bombs that are heating up the summer. However, in-game itself when you talk to the event NPCs they do not mention where one can find the Bombs to fight who give out the "wet ash" tokens that are to be turned in to acquire the cosmetic skimpy bathing suits. Now, that little web page has the biggest hint of all, letting you know that it happens in Costa Del Sol, La Noscea. However, that info isn't given by the in-game NPCs. By all reports from players, the only place you can get the proper items is the King Bomb FATE in that area, which is a level 30 approx FATE.... nowhere else! Of course, the event NPCs don't tell you even the areas by which to find them, so they certainly don't let you know this info and/or have a dialog saying something helpful like "If you're under 25 ranks in your Discipline, it may be too dangerous".

So far, this dynamic event adds to the selection of "little things" that FFXIV seems to omit or get wrong, compared to established MMOs like WoW and even Guild Wars 2, which are both impeccably polished. For years the cardinal "holiday/live event" rule has been in MMORPGs "Make something that people of all levels can enjoy, at least in terms of most content", but here we see FFXIV:ARR avoid this and worse, putting the entire holiday content in ONE ZONE, right after their server trouble! Yeah, that's smart - I heard people in a linkshell last night talking about how the zone/FATE was packed even at like 5 AM EST etc...I don't want to hear that the server is about to go down because the event brought too many people to a single zone and made it unstable!

Seriously you went there.. whatever. And no ignoring it doesn't make the issue go away. If i caught my kid acting like that i would rip the damn computer out of the wall and not give it back for atleast a month or two so he realizes that he cannot do that and its "not ok" to act like that.

Ignoring or not ignoring, it doesn't really make a difference. Other than your kids, you can't really be responsible for how people act, and it shouldn't affect your enjoyment of a great game.

Busy man...I get home and either completely crash, or get asked to go out and paint the town all the time. Figured I'd have some time to devote this weekend but that didn't really happen.

[A lot of QQ]...

1. It's not hard at ALL to get to 30, if nothing else do all the quests in each area and you'll be 30 in 2 days.
2. It's not hard to find the bomb fate, I didn't even know about the event but since the main story quest line took me to Costa Del Sol I saw the event and joined in.

IDK maybe you've never played Final Fantasy games or FF VII in this case, but this is what Costa Del Sol is all about, taking it easy.

Even more QQing

The Costa Del Sol event isn't some huge live event, it's mearly a distraction like all of Costa Del Sol is. It doesn't seem like you want anything to do with the live event, the clothing the npc's are wearing, or the items you can buy by donig the event's content. Since this appears to be the case don't do it! There's sooo much other content in FFXIV at all levels that you shouldn't get so bent out of shape over one FATE of the game.

There are jerks in every game - and while no it shouldn't be socially acceptable - it's like the gold spammers - can't seem to get rid of them - so you just ignore them. I was in a group at lvl 32? and some douche-bag was all upset because he was grouped with a bunch of newbies - go figure - newbies in a newly re-launched game...LoL. This 'expert player' was a dps pulling the mobs...a job the tank normally does in 99.99% of all the other mmo's I've ever played - unless it's a special circumstance like kiting or off tanking... Anyways - I'm lvl 44 now (yay!) and still having a good time in the game. I haven't even touched crafting yet - waiting 'til I hit 50.

I can't view that web page that talks about the Moonfire event (at work now) - but hoping there are some cool goodies to spend all that 'bomb ash' on.

I'm going to try and find Costa Del Sol tonight....maybe. I'm bad with directions in this game but with enough trial and error I'll find my way there eventually.....I hope. My Miqo'te needs swimwear if thats what I can find there. :D To me that sort of thing is a nice break from the story quests and works nicely to break up the monotony a bit.

As for the Duty finder, I've had good luck actually as a healer. Though part of that I think is that when I que up and get in instantly, the other 3 have been waiting for so long and are so thankful to see me that I almost get cheers and applause. I ran Tam Tara for about 5 hours one day this past weekend, just to help people get through. By the time I was done I had a full set of gear out of there and spares as well, along with a bunch of levels from all the rested XP I burned off.

Made some great friends through it, but sadly they are always from other servers so I'll likely never see most of them again.

I did the same thing with Brayflox's Longstop. Spent 8 hours Saturday running it. Ended up with a full suit of Calvary armor. Then the first run I do through Sunken Temple of Qarn, I ended up replacing half of it.

ok, how the fuck do you hold argo with a gladiator? I held some, but not a lot. I spammed the hell out of flash until mp was gone. What am I missing?

Mark targets.

This is the single biggest thing tanks can do to help direct DPS who to attack. At the beginning of an instance run, assuming this is a PUG and not FC group with people who know what to do, is say, "Please attack only the marked target, this help me control aggro"

This then frees you, the tank, up to tab through the different targets you're fighting and go through the 3 combo attacks for each mob.

My usual actions are: Mark the first target, shield lob to pull as I run toward the first mob, aoe taunt to get all targets on me. Once I've run past the mobs (so their backs are toward the party (this also makes tab targeting much safer)) I go for 2 rounds of the 3 attack combo on the marked target then I tab through the other 2 mobs and spread out enmity increasing attacks on them.

How I learned to be a better tank:
I didn't have any problem holding aggro until I got to Bray (early 30s dungeon). First pull healer died. The entire run was hard due to my inability to hold aggro (was a pug). After that I got a group of FC members and explained to them my problem and what I want to do to fix it. I asked them to make my life hell: AOE spam, attack the wrong target etc. A few died but after two instance runs I was in much better shape. I'll still lose aggro every once in a while but I know what tools I have and how to use them to get aggro back - most of the times without moving.

Havn't run into a dungeon yet that's been difficult to keep aggro. At 48 now and hopefully 50 by the end of the week, work preventing me from getting it earlier
