Facebook Releases New Messenger App With Fast 4K Support

Facebook made a new version of messenger available yesterday that allows people to send and receive 4K photos. What is supposed to be good about this is that the speed you get the photo is as fast as it was before the upgrade to 4K. However, they do warn that you should be connected to wifi to use this feature because 4K photos are pretty big (no kidding). I'm not a Facebook user so I can't get too excited about this, but I know a lot of you are so hopefully this is something you'll find useful.

The 4K resolution support will be available immediately for both iPhone and Android phones in the United States, Canada, France, Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea, according to Kelly and Green. The feature will be introduced in other countries in the coming weeks.

Lol wifi? Did you just assume that I'm on mobile? I use a wire, and I'm on a desktop.

4K generally refers to a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160. I just looked, and the photos I was taking in 2006 on my trip to Germany are 3,072 x 2,304. A little less total pixels than 4k, but that was over ten years ago on a point and shoot. This is only news because new tvs are 4k, so they are jumping on the buzzword bandwagon.

Why is this even necessary?

For sending over a duckface selfie or a picture of your food, even some old low resolution like 1280x1024 is sufficient.

If you need a high resolution like this, you are probably doing something professional, in which case you arent' going to want Facebook or anyone else to mess with your image compression and quality, and will instead email the image so that it doesnt get re-encoded or manipulated in any way during the transfer process...

A 4K photo is approximately 8 megapixels.

Still have not and will never download and install the messenger. That app is is more invasive than the Facebook app is itself.

Why wouldn't you just use FB through the browser then? This seems to be about the app.
