Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter have announced a new project that will enable users to use data from one service to sign up for one of the other services. They say this will allow user data to be transferred in and out of the services involved without the user requiring help from the services. Further, this is just a first step and the four companies involved hope that others will jump onboard the effort as well. Anyway, does anyone believe these services aren't going to be sharing your data even if you only stick to one of them? I don't, but that's just how I roll.

Facebook points out that the Data Transfer Project is in its early stages, and while there are only four members now, it hopes other tech companies and experts will get onboard.

Great... So instead of using the same password on every site, we'll just make 99% of the world use both the same account name and password instead. Then when the data gets hacked, the thieves can access 4 times as much data at a time!

FTFA

but they expect that the companies that help them do that will also protect their data.

we do?? we know full well that data protection only applies to YOU the companies, not US the consumer

LOL

Sneaky way to deflect blame when a breach occurs. Now they can all just blame each other.

This.

Now you will be able to share all your data with the entire internet 4 times as fast!

It's too bad this isn't the government doing this, then we could be assured of it taking 20 years, costing trillions and be based on XML and Secure FTP...in other words, no real world impact to Joe Nobodys like you and I.

But those bastards up there? They're going to get this done.... :p

My kid's first child will be named like Logan - 5 or something.......we're gonna be living in domes.

super bigwig: "As simple as it is for us to already determine all your digital presences point to same user and to your IRL ID, we're lazy sods that wanna get richer and we're gonna fire all those code monkeys once they link all those databases and APIs and phones and whatever."

I wonder if this could be a an effort to circumvent California's new law requiring tech and software companies to allow all users of their products and services to choose to not have their data collected or sold, without penalties being imposed on them based on their choice.

If they partner together under one project, does it count as selling data when they share it between each other?

Maybe the California law should be expanded to include mention of non-commercial sharing personal data as receiving the same protected rights for people as collecting and selling of their personal data receive.

No way this could ever go wrong. Clearly this will be "Great" for the consumer no matter how you look at it.

I feel sick now.
