Have seen this reporting from a few sources, so can presume it's legitimate. It's playable.
I've seen a little bit of buzz over the 12GB RAM requirement. Feels like 16GB has been the standard for a while (even for office machines), but people have to find something to get freaked out over.

Coffee lake is a 2017 cpu I bet half of the people on Steam don't own one. That was my last cpu I got from Intel Retail Edge. I upgraded twice since then if you consider it an upgrade.

Yeah, 16GB for a gaming rig has been the standard for quite a few years. Further, DDR-4 isn't super expensive anymore like it was. It isn't that expensive to upgrade to 16GB even if you completely toss your current 8GB/2*4GB module(s). A full 16GB 8*2 kit of decent speeds is less than $100 now.

I think the complaints would be valid if they were wanting more than 16GB.

Nah. My work laptop is only 8gb in single channel lol. It was a $1400 Dell laptop too a couple years ago.

I remember the outrage when Call of Duty: Ghosts came out and it required 6GB. At that time I think a lot of us thought 8GB was the standard, but there were still people running 4GB. I'm sure there are still plenty of people only running 8GB these days. I personally would not run a PC with less than 32GB.

EDIT: Actionsack was removed from the Nitter instances. Updating link.

If I built new now it would be 32GB, but I have no need to upgrade my 16GB yet. Even so, i've looked at 32GB kits, and it's not like it's that expensive anymore for DDR4. I could toss my old 2*8 kit and move to 2*16 for only about $130.

They all are on the Steam forums. The always complaining why their 15 year old CPU or their 660 are not supported anymore.

Confirmed that top posts right now are bitching about the requirements and the usual throwing around of "poor optimization" without knowing what the word "optimization" means.

I want a DDR5 setup some games really benefit from it. Going to wait for Raptor Lake to launch.

Minimum requirements don't scare me at all. They are rough ballpark figures, not absolutes. There is always wiggle room.

I'm playing Elden Ring next week on a 2017 7700k with a RTX 3080. I'm hoping 8 threads matters more than 6 cores. Having a decent overclock surely helps.

Dark Souls 3 didn't scare me either. I played it at launch on an E8500 and a GTX 670. Wasn't ideal experience, but no worse than 30 fps locked consoles at the time.

Minimum is proabably for low 1080p at 30fps. I am sure you can drop it down to 720p with potato specs. I just hate how people whine about minimal specs. These are the same people that were crying consoles were holding PC gaming back. No it is you people with 10 year old hardware that is holding back PC gaming back now.

the only question is, how high will this rank on the greatest games of all time list?...Top 3?...Top 5?

i dunno, it could be... IMHO it'll depend on if there will be anything engaging in terms of narrative/lore besides some cryptic item descriptions and vague npc dialogues. but it's gonna be a great game, no doubt about that.

i'm pretty excited because this will be my first time jumping into a popular/highly anticipated multiplayer From game at launch so we'll all be learning and experiencing it together. it kinda sucks coming in years after and every invasion is about the meta instead of people actually experimenting with builds, trying new gear, etc

Yeah, i'm not holding my breath, and personally, it's going to be very hard to beat Sekiro for me. I love that game.

the only bad thing about Elden Ring finally releasing is no new From Software games for at least another 2 years...hopefully we get Demon's Souls on PC before that

I don't care for the difficulty these games but the magic looks great compared to previous titles. I might start off as melee then change to magic later in I hope the game has a better save system. I'm going to backup my saved games for sure.

Well you know there will be DLC for this. Depending on popularity probably several of them over the next year or two.

I prefer games that don't add DLC's. I really hate going in after the fact when i've already finished a game unless said DLC is closer to a mini sequel/expansion.

Its going to be top 3 or 4 for sure I mean Dark Souls 3 is still on the top 100 and that game is 2016. Almost 6 years was a long wait we had Sekiro but that game was way too hard due to no leveling.

That's why I loved Sekiro. It was almost entirely skill based. You got upgrades for health/stamina & unlocked special attacks, but ultimately, it was totally down to the player just getting better at the game. I'm /really/ not a fan of grinding mobs to increase stats due to a stats-barrier on certain bosses in games. I cannot stand that.

None of the above. Even if it was truly a Top 3 or Top 5 game of all time you would never know it.

We live in a different time and people are feeble and most have a hive-mindset. All it will take is a few issues/bugs here or there to propagate into a big mess due to sharing pics on Twitter, Reddit, etc. Especially a game like this with high expectations. People will tune into bad news more than the good news so if there is any opportunity for such it will be brought to light and feasted upon. For example, if the frame-rate drops even in one area for a split second it will be exposed greatly.

Older games will always skew a bit better ratings wise. People just played them and moved on. Heck, Zelda: Ocarina of Time ran at sub-30fps and is considered one of the greats. The only hope for newer games to be in the "Top all time" category is a surprise Indie darling that no-one was really expecting, such as Hades. I would personally put the latest God of War up there as well. Witcher 3 is in contention as well, but that took some time as well.

A game can simply be an all-time great to an individual. I consider Dark Souls 1 and all-time great and Dark Souls 3 is at least in my personal ballpark (top 15 or so). It's tough to base greatness on anything you read online. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion and the only way most get noticed is if they say something is either the best or worst. It's why minor stuff gets blown out of proportion and there's a 10/10 game being released every other month. I barely even include anything prior to 2000'ish in my all-time list. Different era, different expectations.

i also strongly believe there's a "zeitgeist" of sorts in gaming, with an ebb and flow when it comes to the "great games everybody loves to love" and the "shitty games everybody loves to hate." note that i'm not saying games in either category *necessarily* deserve the love or hate. it's dependent on things like how long it's been since a big AAA release or how long it's been since a launch that was viewed as a huge clusterfuck.

for example, battlefield 2042 has been the punching bag for a few weeks and is still being discussed, while on the other hand it's been a while since a major AAA launch with positive reception (i might be having a brainfart here and forgetting one, but you get the idea.) i guess what i'm getting at is that Elden Ring is probably a great game in its own right, but the release timing just so happens to be just right for the "zeitgeist" and a social media zeal for praising it. (Horizon Forbidden West will also benefit imho although it's a slightly different situation being a playstation exclusive)

Games were more fun when you didn't talk about them online all the time. The old eras were full of bugs. Some funny some game breaking. Finding them was cool and interesting. But right now everything is an online circle jerk. People ranting about textures, frame rates, resolution, graphics, physics, and blah blah blah. One of the reasons Nintendo has done so well is they never got into that mess. They come full out with underpowered hardware and their games don't try to compete there so their players don't get drawn into the online game of shit posting about the latest release.

I don't think Elden Ring will be Top 3 all-time (I was being a bit jokey as I love all From Software games) but I do think it will be in the conversation of all-time rankings...main reason being that Elden Ring is supposedly the culmination of all the work FromSoft has done over the past 10- 15 years...their magum opus...almost everything I've read and seen says it's better than Dark Souls 1...and DS1 is considered by many to be in all-time best games list (Top 25, 50 etc)...so it stand to reason that if ER is better than DS1 that it'll rank higher

but I'm biased in that I think all the FromSoft games since Dark Souls 1 are all time great and From Software is my all-time favorite developer

They still complain about graphics. Just look at the new open world Pokémon game. Straight potato graphics.

From what I've seen the people who complain about the switch are generally people who aren't primarily Nintendo gamers. It's usually people who don't own Nintendo hardware and angrily want them to destroy their own company by publishing their games on xbox/pc/playstation. Or they own multi platforms and then bring the same griping from those platforms to Nintendo.

Without taking things too far off the rails, I've owned every major Nintendo system to date and I want them to go back to having hardware and graphics near the top of the industry. I hate having to buy their hardware because it's the exact opposite of what I want...yet I have to for 3-4 franchises alone. It sucks when those games are great but always have an asterisk because they could/would be better on different hardware. They're "fun" (like all the grown up 80's kids keep saying), but they look/sound and play online like trash. Nintendo is making money hand over fist, so good for them - but so are tons of shovelware mobile game developers.
To take things back on topic, that's one reason Elden Ring won't be on the Switch. It can't handle it in spite of the graphics being mostly last-gen. The Switch is from 2 generations ago. If you look at their online platform, closer to 3.
