Good read, pretty much what was expected IMO. The rest of the details on the cards (price, power usage, noise, features, overclockability, etc.) will establish their worth.

Sorry if these were posted already, I didn't see them though.

Heavy Tessellation:
GTX 480: 43 fps / HD 5970: 29 fps

im very impressed, nice find.

it is just a benchmark...I'm sure the 5970 is much faster for gaming

i think that depends what games you're talking about.

if you talking about dx9 games then im sure that the 5970 will be much faster but dx9 is history to be honest.

games like Crysis 2 with heavy dx11 effects is going to run just as good or better on 480 with a single gpu.

PCB lengths:
HD5870 280mm 28.0cm, 11.02 inches
GTX480 267mm 26.7cm, 10.51 inches
GTX470 243mm 24.3cm, 9.56 inches

interesting............. the gtx480 is smaller than 5870.

March 26th is going to be an interesting day.

I'm more excited to see which speculation was more on the nose :D

Give it another two weeks and we will have real trustworthy reviews.

Yeah except Crysis 2 is gonna be released right around ATI's 6800 series.

All the 4*0GTX benches are obviosly the 480.... Why else cover it up lol

Also the price will be high as it costs Nvidia Tons to make as they only get 10 a wafer... when ATI can get what 100 per wafer that work

are there any morer dx11 games coming out next month?

i only want to see dx11 benchmarks when Fermi comes out.

you notice how the 470 "tied" the 5870 in the DX11 Stalker bench? lol you know... DX11? and you know... tessellation?? you think any developer is going to shoot themselves in the foot by offering a game that can only be playable on 1% of cards? and with medium tessellation the 5970 was still 20% faster? with no tessellation it was 55% faster

stalker i think barely uses any dx11 features so i wont use that game to show off dx11 .

it was never build from ground up for dx11, didnt they just patch that game to use some dx11 effects? wasnt ATI who funded or made that Stalker patch to use some dx11 effects?

i think we should just wait for Crysis 2.

LOL? Crysis 2 is not even out yet, and there isn't any demo about it yet on DX11..

you smoking a bit too much there....

oh, it uses tessellation that is a dx11 feature =)

ultra light tessellation is what i would call that.

like i said before, Stalker wasnt made from ground up for dx11, it only received a patch from AMD i think to use some dx11 features.

I've been down the fanboy/brand worship road before. Only got me lacking products. Now I hope Fermi offers a competitive product at a great price, and they sell like hotcakes so we all win, whether we like nVidia or AMD, prices will come down. That's a win for all of us.

Getting into internet rage benchmark speculation won't do anything for the actual benchmark and performance of the product. Let's just hope these are true.

If that is seriously only the gtx470 it's not too bad, well wont be once they sort out 480 yields.

I'm impressed by min frames and obvious tesselation advantage, but still it has been said many a time that performance diff won't be large enough or soon enough to matter this gen.

now I am wondering. wouldnt it be funny to make a video card that goes like
300 fps every 1 second to 0 fps 2 second. average will be 100 fps but you will feel a pause 2 seconds.

I'm surprised... no post from ShuttleLuv yet. Fascinating.

Huh? Why don't you go over my post history recently and how I say Fermi so far has been a decent disappointment. I don't even want one. I have a 5870 oc'ed and intend to keep it, if not refresh it to the latest Ati. I got kinda caught up in the whole tessellation thing until Kyle came by and basically laid it on the line. And thats what we all need. Only guys like Kyle and industry insiders know the REAL deal. We can only speculate. So our word and "speculation" is essentially worthless.

As of now, Fermi offers nothing that I'd want to sell this card to get. It will probably be in line with a 5870 give or take a few benchmarks, maybe surpassing it a small margin in others.

That's a bad idea. You wouldn't get good results in gameplay but benchmarks would look pretty good.

I don't think anyone is a fan of stuttering

6 months later for equal performance. Color me unimpressed by Nvidia's part. Its no FX5800 atleast.

Nice guess work there... We'll see soon enough. The only clear advantage i've seen Fermi have so far is in tessellation heavy benchmarks which from what i've seen sofar has not translated into a clear advantage in any games.

Wait a min. Just 2 months ago you were spewing how un-important DX11 was.

Now you are happy about a benchmark which you cannot even play?

And now you want more DX11 games?

/facepalm

If it makes nvidia look good it's important.
If it make ATI look good it's unimportant.

O I know. I remember him posting everytime someone brings up ATI drivers and them having issues.

Even when Nvidia released a driver set killing GPU's. Did you see him bash nvidia? O hell no.

Either way I am shocked he has been able to troll this long....pretty bad imo

Yeah I dunno why he keeps harping on about the tessellation performance but failed to see that non-heavy-tessellation performance lags behind the 5970 pretty drastically. Tessellation isn't the only DX11 feature either and it's going to be years before we see a game use it to the extent as the Unigine benchmark. No one knows if Crysis 2 uses tessellation nor have Crytek even announced a launch date.

The GeForce 470/480 needs to perform well in current, released games like Bad Company 2 and AvP. This thing isn't going to win any awards based on performance in future games.

always got an excuse eh? just eat it up for once =p unless Nvidia pays you, you have no reason to be this loyal to a brand name

You guys didn't get the memo? If nVidia doesn't have it or isn't good at it, it's not important :p

That was a card I skipped. I was running SLI'd 8800 GTXs.

Jeez, that place wants 650 for that thing still.

Nice to finally see some numbers trickling down, though I haven't seen anything particularly impressive compared to what my ~2 year old 4870x2's can do.

The cooler reminds me of GTX 295 single PCB version's cooler where the GPU heatsink is an individual block not attached to the entire cooler "frame". It can be removed easily to replace the thermal paste without needing to unscrew the entire cooler unit, should the need arise. Really love this design, glad to see nVidia bringing it to their new gen of cards

Looks good so far. I know they are late and all but I'm not expecting any miracle either. Its good enough if it can give ATi a run for their money, hopefully both company can keep the other prices in check.

I have a hd 5870 oc'ed to 1000core, I honestly consider whats best in the market, but if this 470 is priced at 500 bucks, I honestly switch back and forth but this time I don't think that will be happening, instead I am considering a 2gb version of hd 5870, if that one is decently priced and sell of my 1gb version. seems like the amount of memory is holding the hd 5870 at high resolution.

I am sorry, but that is sad. Nvidia has had six months now and on real world gaming the card is actually the same speed as the 5870. To make matters worse is the retail price of 499 for the 470 and 680 for the 480. The only thing I really saw positive was a benchmark that is not real world gaming. With this, we can assume the 480 will be better than the 5870, but will it be better than the 5970 or ati's refresh?
