Cyberpunk on Consoles: Bad to Rad

The newest blockbuster game will be running on no less than 7 different versions. Here is a look at performance/graphics for those thinking about getting the new game.

PS4 / One S (and OG One):
Simply awful. Not only is resolution goes down to 720p on these machines, textures take forever to pop in, and sometimes not at all. FPS is goes down to the 20s on PS4 and even lower than that on the base Xbox.

PS4 Pro / One X:
Both have much better textures and resolution than the base consoles. Waiting for the DF review of the One X, but the PS4 pro still looks to dip below 30 fps at times.

Series S:
Looks to be more of an upscaled One S with a solid 30 fps. Screenshot below shows it doesn't look as good as the One X, at least in my opinion.

PS5 / Series X:
Obviously the best of the bunch, though still are waiting for a true next generation patch. Right now they are likely running upscale and/or higher quality versions of the PS4 Pro / One X versions. Both look to be mostly 60 fps with the Series X has an additional Quality mode that runs at a solid 30 FPS.

So far Digital Foundry only has the PS4/Pro version.

Despite 7 consoles, it's possible that the game is only coded at 2, maybe 3 settings.

First is PS4/One S look to be Lower Quality 1080p dynamic, but usually down to 720p with awful performance due to hardware limits. I am thinking the Series S uses this setting but manages to hold 1080p 30 for.

Second is for PS4 Pro / One X at higher quality with 1440p. Again, due to hardware limits, these are closer to 1080p at 30 fps. Likely the Series X/PS5 hold these settings at 1440p and 60 GPS.

There is a quality mode on Series X, so it will be interesting to hear Digital Foundry take on resolution/settings here.

I don't think you will get drastically better visuals with the patch. Most likely it will be some lighter weight RT effects, even faster load times for the NVMEs, and a better 60 for performance; basically all the stuff they didn't code in before CDPR had access to the new hardware.

Overall PS5 had done a great job matching performance and visuals on cross gen games despite being a bit weaker on paper than the Series X. There was definitely a much bigger gap between the PS4 Pro and One X.

After the newest DF analysis, things are another more complicated than thought.

PS5: Usually 1080p to 1200p and mostly 60 fps, with some drops while driving. Low point is that it has some PS4 like quality settings and very low crowd density.

Series X: Performance mode almost always 108p and won't go higher. Seems to have a lower framerate, especially in combat. Quality mode averages around 1600p and is a very stable 30 fps. Also adds things like ambient occlusion. By far the best looking version. With both settings, you get good crowd density.

Series S: Strange one as it seems to be closer to 1200p. Visual settings like AA are lower but it does get good crowd density. Even gets ambient occlusion. Mostly Solid 30 fps. Far better experience than the PS4 Pro. Overall, it punches above its weight.

Runs fine on my Series X. I use performance mode, because I dont really see a difference between performance or quality mode. Be interesting to see how it performs when the next gen graphic/update comes out for it (whenever that is).

Basically the game has to not be able to download to your system, at all. That is the only definition according to what I have read.

Even if the game is literally unplayable, like it won't launch or it crashes immediately - does not meet the definition of "faulty", according to Sony.

So yeah...this particular thing is a Sony issue, currently.

Let's not forget that this game was in development years ago so there is no reason it should not have some flexibiliry to older hardware.

That sound subjective, a game engine is terrible or good on what it is set to accomplish, a game engine developed with being something that do not run on 2010 hardware can still be perfectly good, depending on what it is set to do.

I feel there is a good reason, by making the engine less flexible to old hardware we could assume they were able to release the game sooner at lower cost than if they did otherwise with more impressive trailers, sales numbers make it hard to judge those decision's.

10 year's old is a very long time for a PC even today, that is not the equivalent of reacting to GTA 5 not running well on a PC from 2003 but not that far from that either.

Yeah, and it performs and look better on the X360 than CP77 does on XB1.

Besides, if production was on time, PCDR may have had to port it to the X360 as well....

GTA 5 works in PS3 and 360, because rockstar took the time and care to make unique versions of many assets (in addition to aggressive asset streaming). So even though the assets are technically lower quality---they maximized how good they can look. Rather than only turning down settings.

CDPR did the same thing with The Witcher 3 on Nintendo Switch. That version has tons of unique textures and other customizations, unique to that version. Its not just the PC version, set to "low".

And I think that is the problem with Cyberpunk. At some point, the goal posts moved and the game was no longer really being developed for PS4 and Xbone. And scaling back the settings at the last minute, is simply not enough. They need to go through the game and do alternate versions of lighting and shader effects which are more appropriate for the hardware. If done well, the game will still look like Cyberpunk.

Have you ever seen Metro: redux on PS3?----its amazing. And its because they took time and care to come up with ways appropriate for the hardware, to get very similar visual results.

Eh, no, CP2077 didn't start development until after the last Witcher DLC release, which was in 2016. The whole "game was in development for 8 years" isn't really accurate. They started conceptualizing it and consulting with Mike Pondsmith in 2012, but actual pre-production started in 2016.

It seems that this game scales down rather far. Even if it looks bad, it still manages over 20 fps with a 3000g. Even the base Xbox should be able to do better than that.

X1: Version 1.04 was often sub 20 fps and even 11 fps on the infamous night car chase.
v. 1.05 pretty much gives a 50% increase in fps with less hitching

X1X: 1.04 was usually mid-20s and even 16 fps on the car chase. Its now 30 fps more often than not!

SS: Even this version was below 30 fps despite its lower resolution on v 1.04. Basically a locked 30 fps in all situations with v 1.05

SX: A bit disappointing for v 1.05 here. The quality mode was always 30 fps and still is. However, fps mode is often in the mid 50s like it was a before. Considering that this setting has similar resolution and image quality to One X, this seems rather weak.



If only they could have had this just 1 week ago after all that work. Better late than never, I guess.

I'm guessing it looks just as bad for Sony that this game passed their certification process. There were a few articles saying how CDPR may have embellished their certification application heavily, so I bet Sony was leaning on that as a reason to pull the game.

Zoom into the oil rig and background vegetation of the SS comparing 1.04 and 1.05. The SS now matches the One X.

Focus on 'Power Source' on the car picture as well. Series S looks way better than it did before. More obvious in the video too.

I saw on the PC side of things, the patch put in that AMD CPU fix...since next gen is AMD (not sure about previous gen)...wonder if that helped here as well.

I've had Sony refund a few purchases from PSN with no issues. One of them was when my daughter bought a game without my permission.

Anyways, I'm kinda glad Sony had the game pulled; hopefully that will force CDPR to take those ports seriously and update the game to an acceptable standard. I'm amazed they let it launch in that state to begin with and it's obvious they knew it was an issue given that they forced reviewers to use their provided B-roll in their reviews instead of their own captured footage and also since they had delayed the game a few times at this point as well. But they got greedy and wanted that holiday sales money and now it's burning them with the mass refunds.

Unlike PS5, the series X seems to struggle maintaining 60 fps so a resolution mode at a locked 30 fps might feel even better.
