ELKHART — A longtime Elkhart audio manufacturing plant will be phased out over the next several months the company announced Thursday.

Crown Audio, a division of Harman Professional, which makes various audio devices for professional settings such as concert venues, will close its Elkhart plant, located at 1718 W. Mishawaka Rd. over the next several months, according to site leader Marc Kellom.

The company is working on consolidating dozens of plants around the world to become a more efficient company, Kellom said.

"At the division level, not just at the Elkhart level, we've been facing some serious business challenges the last several years," he said. "We need to just try and get ourselves into a more agile position, one of our problems is we're spread out across several dozen sites around the world."

The company will be closing around half its sites worldwide, Kellom said, throughout this restructuring and consolidation project.

RIP Harman. I hope Samsung enjoys the patents that they bought so that they could get a jump start into the dashboards of tomorrow's cars.

But they aren't closing. It says they are restructuring and closing half of its facilities.

How many Crown Audio plants are there in the world? Or is it dozens of Harman plants / divisions in general? It will be interesting to see as Samsung just wanted the patents.

I always wanted to own some Crown equipment as it always got rave reviews. I have some JBL stuff like a couple of the W10GTi subs for the car around the house. Maybe someone will buy some of these plants and make a new high end audio brand.

Man, it certainly wouldn't hurt if they reduced the number of product lines to make it easier for consumers.
http://www.crownaudio.com/en/product_families 15 different families, of amps, and then different ones within each family. I feel the same way about going to a restaurant with a 15 page menu, just overwhelming. Having 1,400 buzzwords per product description didn't make it much easier.

What's their typical consumer line?

Professional audio engineers. Concerts, DJ, churches, live TV sound, malls, some home users that wanted the best, most rugged gear, etc.

Class D is taking away a lot of the magic of amplifier making. You don't have to worry nearly as much about layout or components being heat stressed like back in the day of Class B and discreet transistors.

So is Harmon in general taking a hit or just this child company? I haven't checked on them in a while, but they started sucking up a lot of companies back around 2000ish or so.

Most people get the budget Crown XLS or XLS2 DriveCore amps.

Will the closure cause any price hike?
