Consoles Became "Lead Platform" Late in BF3 Development

I don't see what the big deal is. It makes perfect sense to me. Its easier to patch and issue updates to the PC version after release, we're use to it. For the consoles, it needs to be 95% good to go to keep the kids happy.

I have zero problem with you not wanting to buy a game. Just don't call something Garbage when you have never used it.
Origin is garbage and I don't have to own or play bf3 on pc to know that.

It's like the definition of pornography "you know it when you see it". I have no desire to split up my gaming library between Origin and Steam, I would like all of my games to remain on Steam. It is garbage because Origin isn't new, it's the same shitty EA DM (EA Download Manager) that has been around for a few years and rebranded as Origin to launch it into the mainstream consciousness. It was shitty before it was called Origin, it's shitty after it's called Origin.

No Steam, no sale.

I've been using EADM/Origin for three years. Let me tell you it is A LOT better now. More stable, faster speeds, much better designed over-all, better menu set up, a few real options in the options menu, and so on. Origin is just as good as Steam is now. I like Steam's over-all layout and feature set better, but Origin works just as well.

I figured consoles were the lead platform as soon as they announced different DLCs for different retailers, held Back to Karkand hostage for money unless you were willing to buy the game before release, and then insisted that the community was too stupid to have mod tools.

Those behaviors all seem to be habits of console-centric games these days.

For BF3, I don't even open origin. It stays minimized on my taskbar, and I have the notifications turned off. I launch BF3 through Opera Speed Dial. I've looked at origin twice since I bought BF3. Once to preload, and once to launch the game at midnight on release.

I won't argue that as a game merchant and download manager, Origin/EADM just plain blows. But if I ignore it, I never notice that it's there.

I knew it when they were trying to peddle their Origin malware onto us PC gamers and like you, the DLC/mod tools debacle.

Origin is there to funnel more money in their pockets in the form of DLC, and removing mod tools keeps the community from making awesome maps that would dent sales of EA generated DLC. In other words, why would they want to give the community a means of improving the game through user ingenuinity when it will cost EA their nickel and diming scheme?

Then there's the genius idea of putting server listings in a stupid web browser server. Why can't they just do what Valve has done with their games? Valve's server browser is pretty peerless when it comes to finding what you want to play and QUICKLY.

On the other hand, it's nearly impossible to tell the difference between a kick, a disconnect, and a game crash, when the game has no 'In-Game' menu to fall back to. And... the promised settings and loadout customization outside of sitting around on the battlefield like an idiot? Still not there.

Change is great. Change solely for the sake of change is not.

Half assed and rushed to meet a deadline that was moved UP when they decided they wanted to steal some sales from MW3 by releasing early.

Change is great. Change solely for the sake of change is not.

Change is wonderful, if properly executed and implemented. However, regression and violating the KISS principle is not.

Agreed. BF3's UI is the worst tech regression of 2011, followed closely by Ubuntu's 11.10 UI.

Re-read it...in mid-production, they had to prioritize the consoles in order to get them ready for release. But instead we'll have 7+ pages of moaning because DICE didn't priortize the PC 100% of the time.

And yes, I totally see the connection between a web based browser and consoles...wait what?

Great hopefully every other developer takes note and sees how a fucking game should play on the pc. Whether they switched mid platform means nothing. The game is extremely well executed. Once they stomp out the bugs It'll easily be game of the year on pc.

Hopefully other companies raise an eyebrow and make such a valiant effort on their next go around instead of a shitty piss poor console port like Rage.

I love these people who quickly forget how asstastic Steam was and to a large extent still is. Such short memories completely. Points for you to stick to your guns, just no points for you for not choosing the right time to pick your battles. Probably truly the best FPS game ever to release, and you choose now to stick to your guns. If anything give what has drastically improved a new try. Even your precious Steam had it very very wrong for a very very long time. That you want all your games in one client. Wake up, if PC gaming is to survive, not all the money can filter through Valve's wallet. You are asking for the wrong thing by choosing convenience over practicality. In your future world, Valve will have no competition and will force their way on all of us. A varied approach to digital distribution is the more sane approach and will more likely benefit the consumer with competition than not. I am clearly not saying EA is the way, just that they have a right to challenge the market with their own distribution system, that may even better/surpass Steam in many areas. I can tell you from my perspective, they already bettered Steam here in my neck of the woods where Steam's servers are very slow to download, whereas the Origin servers were at my max speed on game release day. That says something. I think what most people really want to say is that they see it a bit painful to see what truly is a great game passed over for just Origin. It isnt worth it in most peoples opinion. I was like you, I didnt want to use the Origin system, but the Battlefield series BY DICE, is more important than EA's Origin. Most forget how BFBC2 was not done under the same realm of developement. This is the successor to BF2, not BFBC2. But I think you already know that.

They had a hard time getting it to work on consoles.

This is actually a PC port for a change lol.

This is what I read too.

Loving BF3, sorry for crashing jets into other jets on the runway on one of the [H] servers. :p

I've been on three 64player servers post patch and there is zero rubber-banding going on. That's the last of my technical gripes, now to have foregrips removed from LMG's.

While there are not many game publishers left, imagine what would happen if every single one of them decided to make their own port of Origin. Since more gamers have at a minimum of 3 games loaded on their computer at any given time, you can imagine 3 such programs loading every singe time they log in. The result is a ton of tasktray trash and used RAM that most people have no clue how to turn off.

Beyond this, the fact our as*hat US Government can't regulate their way out of a paperbag, let alone wrap their heads around this technology thing to secure personal information, we're left with lots of spyware to record what we do. It pisses people off.

My personally biased opinion, derived from professional experiences is that EA/DICE need to die a Chapter 13 death and I'd be the first one to piss on their heads if I ever got the chance.

Why is this a surprise? It's economics. A game maker cannot make a profit making a game for PC. Consoles is where the money is and for a game maker to even survive, that's what they has to focus on first. Don't know why some PC gamers seem to be insulted by this. Nothing to get insulted about. We should be thankful that the game makers are including us PC gamers at all. The game makers have to make a buck like everyone else or they go down the tubes and everyone loses. Myself I'm thankful that I still get to play good games on my PC (and there is a lot of them no matter what Hardocp says). I just get the game and play it, I could care less if it's console or pc first, I don't get into it. I just play for what the game is and still have a hell of a lot of fun doing it (or else I'd just stop).

It's attitudes like that about being "grateful and thankful that they even think about us PC gamers" are what allows the companies to sell us these half assed console ports. They know we'll buy anything, in that, we're probably no different than the console crowd.

However, there will be those of us who choose to abstain from buying games from companies that do not want to put the PC gamer first and will instead vote with our wallet for those who do.

The game looks great, plays well, is well optimized and is fun as hell. I couldn't give 2 shit's about where the primary focus at the back end of the dev cycle was. All that matters is for once the PC version isn't a last minute half assed effort that plays and runs like balls.

100% AGREE!

Changing focus to consoles, which are another name for a 5yr old computer, does nothing more than take 5yrs worth of progress back. Face it, consoles are old and inferior PC's.

I've taken up classic hobbies like gardening and house upgrades since PC games have progressively went to crap.

Anyone who's played games over the past decade can recall a time with games told as much of a story as any book and played well enough to be caught off guard while enveloped in their reality. While graphics have gotten better overall if you use 1995 as a marker, their overall enjoyment have declined severely.

Stories as good as a book? Maybe some book meant for young teens.

No, it's attitudes like that that keep some people to still have fun playing good games. You act like if it's a console first game, that automatically means it's a crap game. If I listened to that nonsense, I'd never play anything as most all games are console first. You don't want to spend money for these games, don't do it. It's your loss for missing out. I choose to keep playing good games as long as the fun is still there. You might as well quit playing now dude cause nothing is changing. As long console game sales and console gamers continue to dwarf pc, it's just the way it's going to be. Again, this is new news, it's been this way for some time now. Apparently you haven't adjusted to it yet.

You mean a game maker cannot make as much profit making a game for PC as for consoles. Game companies still profits from PC gaming, just not as much as consoles since there are a lot of "kiddies" with consoles.

Is that why the Origin client usually takes at least 3-4 tries before it will actually load properly?

And when it does load, the initial info page is always screwed up.. tries to go to a non-existant site.

Once the client finally loads properly, it works fine.. but having to fight with it is a huge pain.

What about the Origin store? It has been a complete mess the past few weeks.. Going slow, not loading, not letting me log in.. not letting me reset my password.

Oh, and the chat support is very iffy.. the first person I tried to talk to gave me a few lines of what was obviously something that was copy/pasted and had nothing to do with what I was asking about... and then they said.. "have a nice day, goodbye" without even letting me respond or making sure my issue was resolved.. which it wasn't.

The second person was a lot more helpful.. but waiting 30 minutes (twice) to get ahold of online chat is completely unacceptable.

A. Why is anybody surprised from this? I'd be more surprised if they didn't honestly. Blizzard is the only company that I believe would surprise me if they focused on consoles.

B. If they focused on PC, then console would be out of the picture. Mainly due to the lack of ram.

C. Just be glad they didn't screw up BF3 for PC like ID did to Rage. It's getting to the point where the games don't even work when you install it. Which is like companies moving from focusing on consoles, to not giving a shit about PC games at all. ID Software did a complete u-turn on their stance on PC gaming. I'm willing to say that they're the worst PC gaming company on the planet.

Luckily Dice didn't have enough time to wreck the game enough to make it undesirable. Glad that decision was made later in the development stage. Any sequels or expansions will most likely be console based. We might not get that many patches and upgrades though now. Their focus is now officially consoles.

I do not support being forced to install Origin to play BF3 and I bought BFBC2 and had a shitty experience playing with that game. It's not really my style of game after all, but hey, I was just like you guys, I bought BFBC2 after hearing everyone rave about it, I played the BFBC2 beta (cause I preordered). I didn't expect the pile of crap on release day that I got.

That soured me on EA/DICE.

I agree. I didnt like the feel of BFBC2 and now I hear BF3 is more of the same. BF3 beta was meh. I cant wait for MW3.

I'm glad someone has some commonsense. Since when does redefining a new "lead platform" mean leaving everything else to f***all? It would make sense that if they focused on PC development from the start, they would have to focus on console development at some point to get them up to speed. Anyone who's played BF3 on the PC instead of sit on forums and bitch can clearly see the effort that went into its PC development. Hell, it's the first multiplayer game with Crysis-level graphics that runs extremely well. And what do the consoles have? ~720p @ ~30FPS with oodles of texture pop-in? Some of you are bitching about the development time it took to create that?

I can still not figure out how people screwed up Origin this badly. Day one I downloaded BF3, loaded the browser-based Battlelog in Chrome (maybe that's half your problem), and joined a game. The only problem I ever had was the server list not refreshing, which was easily fixed by hitting "Home" and re-entering. This was officially fixed in two days anyway. I've never had a bad start-up, a crash, or any kind of failed load. And I've played a ton of BF3 over the last week. Sometimes I wonder what sort of shape some of you keep your comps in.
I agree. I didnt like the feel of BFBC2 and now I hear BF3 is more of the same. BF3 beta was meh. I cant wait for MW3.
Or people could just wait for any excuse to bash BF3 to justify getting MW3, which I imagine is what half of you are waiting to do. I find it funny that a lot of the people bashing BF3 play MW3 for the same reasons they're bashing BF3 for. MW has been the same game since 2007 and still people keep forking over more money to buy it again and again. It's truly amazing. And no wonders decent PC developers like DICE are few and far between - why deal with the headache and bitching of never satisfied whiners when you can just dish out the same old crap on consoles over and over and make twice the money?
