The SweClockers site is suggesting that Intel is pulling the trigger a bit early on getting its new Coffee Lake processors to market in response to the huge popularity of AMD's new Ryzen CPUs. The Coffee Lake CPUs officially launch on October the 5th, so we will know soon enough. While most of this story comes down to the rumor mill, they are quoting channel partners becoming concerned with an early launch effectively killing off any current Kaby Lake business, leaving dead inventory, as folks then wait for Coffee Lake availability. The one who waits for Intel Coffee Lake may have to wait longer than October 5th. According to data for SweClockers, there is a shortage of new processors until after the turn of the year.

The launch was originally scheduled to take place in early 2018, but should have been moved in a quarter due to AMD's launch of the Ryzen Processor family . Now, sources of SweClockers speak that the modified plans have an impact on availability and that Coffee Lake appears to be a shortage of the year.
 
I am in the market for one, but I've waited 4+ years to upgrade happy to wait a couple of months longer to save a bit of money. As of right now, Newegg have the processors listed but no Z370 motherboards. Perhaps this isn't going to be a smooth launch after all.
 
If there is going to be significant "dead" inventory, might have some good sales on 2xx motherboards and Kaby Lake processors? Still, 4 core i3 at normal i3 pricing is mighty tempting...

Possibly, but who wants to buy into a dead platform? Coffee Lake should have comparable products, I think it's just a question of pricing.
 
Well Sweclockers was speaking about the Scandinavian market and stores have reported a very limited supply on at least the unlocked K-cpu's.
What the situation will be in America or Europe as a whole is still unknown but we will know soon enough.

The i7-7700K has been on sale for $260 as recently as last week.
 
Eh, the original release date for this was supposed to be early 2018. Accelerating forward the launch by 6 months is bound to cause a shortage of silicon.

It will be fast, but it will also be scarce.

Hopefully we'll get official price cuts on the Kaby Lake lineup to tide things over, as this i3 8100 competitor is still priced $80 too high:

Basically, if we don't see price cuts to the entire Kaby Lake lineup, then these shortages will be self-created by Intel.

Yes, AMD will no longer be able to sell the R7 1800X at $429 with the i7-8700K at $359, so their prices will have to come down.
 
I might consider IceLake for gaming if Intel gets their !@#$@# together. Coffee lake holds no interest for me compared to Ryzen. So I'll be skipping it.

But for my heavy duty processing TR is the one for me.

Intel doesn't do price cut. At most store will drop the price a bit just move their left over stock.

Except this is a unique situation THAT INTEL HAS NEVER BEFORE BEEN FORCED INTO.

Coffee Lake STOPS AT FOUR CORES. There are no plans to go lower, because yields are just too good.

So either Intel rebrands Kaby Lake for the Coffee platform (with a price drop) and discontinue Kaby Lake z270 platform in record time, or they give current Kaby a price drop, and keep Coffee to 4 cores for it's entire life, with Kaby at the low-end

I think option 2 would be the less painful of the two. It's a lot easier for customers to swallow price cuts than early-killing of a platform.

TBH: Z270 really didn't offer much over Z170. The only reason to get it was Kaby Lake

Coffee Lake is the first significant change in consumer grade processors. But I'm predicting (based on early benches) it still lags behind AMD Ryzen in price/performance on heavily threaded task.

I am blessed to currently be living within reasonable driving distance of a Micro Center. They will offer good discounts when trying to clear inventory, and seem to have a perpetual $30.00 off when bundling a processor with a motherboard on "mature" platforms. Since their prices are about the same as Newegg on these parts, I have to figure right now, an actual price on that CPU there to be $159.99. So I'll have to see what other discounts and price cuts come, and what deals on the new i3 are.

When talking pricing about products not yet released, or discounts on soon to be old but still current inventory, it's all speculation. Fun speculation for me, but speculation still.
 
There is no shortage of Coffee Lake CPU's....also, we always planned on upping core counts across the entire lineup with Coffee Lake, and it is in no way a reaction to what any other company may or may not have released on the market. Oh, and while we're thinking about it, those other CPU's are glued-together hack-jobs that we wouldn't use for a calculator, let alone a real machine.

TLDR: Standard Intel approach to life, nothing to see here. Had the same sort of stuff going on when the Thunderbirds were blowing the doors off of the P4's.

Exactly. And this will be a good time for all those running a lesser Skylake or Kaby to top off their platform.

The new stuff will be good certainly but plenty of legs left in the 7700k. I plan on picking one up for my brother who runs a 6500 vanilla. We can sell that off to recoup some and the extra speed and threads of the i7 will hang for a while.

That would require some change to the innards of Kaby Lake, to make it work with the new motherboards.

Immediate price drops of Kaby Lake are a non issue. Here in Sweden the price on 7700K went from 2,900 to 3,200 SEK yesterday in a response to the lack of Coffee Lake.

I like these new changes. It's much better than the small changes we've had since Sandy Bridge. It's actually moving forward, even if it is just adding more cores. I'll give it a few more generations before upgrading, but we're not going to go backwards. 4 cores as a minimum is the new normal. I like that. May not be much now, and may not be that competitive with AMD, but it's a step forward and out of the plateau we had before.

That's nice you have a Microcenter. Sure is pretty nice to have some fairly close....I'm fine with having nothing good nearby and will rely on Amazon and Newegg.

I want one; however, I can wait. I ha e a 4770 and to be honest, if it was a k chip, I would probably not bother.
 
Well the 4 core x299 sort of ruined it for me. Makes no sense. The high tdp of the other Xeon hybrid chips keeps me away. I am sure its knee jerk even though they say otherwise.
Ryzen is positioned well and now the 6x raid on nvme thread ripper is crazy for movie or photo editors.
I have a 6850k but I might refresh for zen2
