Hi,
Not trying to start a war between Nvidia vs AMD fans, just need honest input.

My current setup:

Core-i7 6700
16GB RAM
SSD 750GB
GTX 745
Dual 27" 1080p monitors

Now I am looking to upgrade my monitor to either:
LG 43" 43UD79b or
Acer 38" XR382CQK

So i need a better graphic card to run either of those 2 monitors.

I am Not a hardcore gamer, but I game occasionally.
Played FIFA 17, Assissin's Creed Rogue (Have to finish this to move on to new titles in AC), Tomb Raider 2013 recently.

The prices of GTX 1070 and Vega 56 are similar on Newegg. I like nvidia cards, G-Sync monitors are expensive, Freesync monitors comparatively are cheaper. The Acer 38" does have freesync,

Which card would u guys recommend if prices of both are within $30 of each other.

Thanks

If those are your choices I guess the Vega and Acer would be better.

If your decision is in six months I’d say Vega, If you are buying that 38” then I say Vega. In six months they’ll likely have the drivers ironed out. When freesync works it’s fantastic — it’s something you don’t want to give up — But Vega’s drivers are buggy right now. Freesync isn’t even guaranteed to be working driver version to driver version in my experience with several launch cards. IE current driver 17.10.2- freesync is broken on my Vega and my HP Omen 32” for instance.

The Vega 56 should be a better card than the 1070 when the dust settles

HOWEVER, The 1070ti will be a faster card than the Vega 56 and the drivers will likely be ready to go on day one too — so that should be a consideration. Frankly the 1070ti isn’t probably quite enough card for that 38” resolution or for 4K. The Vega will be more forgiving with the 38” because of Freesync.

It boils down to how much patience do you have to wait while AMD ferrets out the game and use bugs over the next few months?

If you could swing a 1070ti and a gsync monitor I’d absolutely recommend that foremost.

Release date for 1070 Ti is November 2nd, just fyi.

Don't be the guy that bought a 7700k a few days before the 8700k releases.

Vega has tons of head room and will outperform a Vega 64/1080 with an overclock. I vote Vega 56.

This is spot on. Do you want to spend your limited gaming time tinkering with settings/configs/drivers/etc. and save a bit of money, or just fire up games and play without hassle, but spending a bit more upfront? (generally speaking)

Personally, I like to avoid the hassle and spend a bit more upfront for the better solution, I'm not a fan of settling/compromise when it can be avoided for a bit more money.

Pre-order today, ships November 2nd.

Warranty directly from Nvidia.

Newegg/Amazon/etc. gouging bypassed by being a card sold directly from Nvidia.

You also most definitely do not want to be running a reference leafblower Vega anyways.

FYI on Newegg's ebay store Vega 56's are selling for $420 now. With the pre-sale pricepoint of 1070ti at $450 you save $30 right there. Maybe Vega 56 will be available soon at MSRP of $400. Unlikely we will see 1070ti below MSRP anytime soon.

If you want/need a blower style cooler I think it is a no-brainer to go with Vega at this price point. The 1070ti also has an increased TDP of 180W (1070 is 150W) which is closer to that of Vega's at 210W. Get that FreeySync monitor you're looking at.

If you want/need an open air cooler then those don't exist for Vega yet, but the 1070ti should have plenty available next week.

Not really

It will nearly match.

But you can oc the 64 a bit too
And you can really oc the 1080.

Going to disagree here, vega 56 scores within 1fps of 64 at the same clock speeds. They both hit the same clocks from what Ive seen, seems to just be silicon lottery.

Vega 56 has less shaders than Vega 64 that cannot be unlocked via overclocking or bios flash. Even if you clock it to the exact same speeds as a 64 with the swap to a 64 bios it's still going to be potentially a little bit slower because of the lesser shader count - IF a game takes advantage of the extra shaders that is. (which certainly all games don't.)

Just pointing out it isn't like a free true Vega 64 when you flash a 56 to 64 - though yes it is very close.

The extra shaders don't do anything in games. Perhaps there isn't a game out that takes advantage, but its pretty clear it just doesn't scale well with extra shaders

Surprised me too. 56 > 64 because performance is identical clock for clock and it uses a ton less power. I honestly wish I went 56 route.

Lol. Been weeks still cant get an 8700k. I found a Golden OCable 8700k for 500 at Microcenter but was on a long list.

So a 7700k for a good price is still a good thing to be had for many.

You can always flash to a Vega 56.

I would probably get AMD because of freesync, but don't think you can really go wrong either way.

Thanks a lot of the info guys :)
From what I am reading here Vega 56 has a lot of potential almost very close to Vega 64 in gaming clock-for-clock.

I had no clue that the 1070Ti was coming out on Nov 2nd.
Any predictions how that is going to change the pricing on 1070 or even Vega 56? Should I wait for black Friday? I am guessing we will have very good idea about 1070Ti vs Vega 56 by then.

So now I am looking at 1070Ti vs Vega 56 atm?

I think with the 1070ti being priced at $450 pre-ordered it won't affect Vega or the plain 1070 much.

I'd say get the 38" and Vega, since you can use FreeSync.

4K is nice, but not worth it unless you want to spend the dough on a 1080 Ti (or do SLI/CF).

Even that 38" is a pretty hefty resolution, but FreeSync may make it workable.

Iwould get tthe Vega 56. I have one and it performs a lot closer to a 1080 than it does to a 1070. I am expecting Alpha Cool Eiswof 120 GPX ful;l cover gpu block to arrive next week. After installation this baby will outperform a 1080.

While that is true, the 800 MHz HBM2 on a V56 against the 945 MHz on the V64 is where the diff is at. You *have* to flash the V56 to get it close to/past V64 stock and be stable.

Flashing is easy as pie.

The 1070ti, spec wise, is closer to a 1080 than a 1070. The last time I had an AMD product was when the 7870 was relatively new, so this is old and anecdotal, but I've found Nvidia's offerings tend to 'just work.' For me and my limited available gaming time, that's worth the price premium.

double true with AMD cards/drivers at and around launch (and to this point).
not so much true after some time passes and the AMD drivers are up to snuff.

I like the 56 far more then then 1070, and in the us you can now find the 56 very close to msrp in the US. in Canada where I am the 56 is still about $150 more then is should be.

a 56 is almost as fast as a 1080.
That's simply not true.
Vega 56 isn't nearly as fast as an AIB 1080.
Even Vega 64 Watercooled isn't really as fast as an AIB 1080

1080 will overclock better than Vega 64 watercooled if comparing 1:1, meanwhile Vega 56 will never perform as well as Vega 64 watercooled.

Freesync is a game changer (when it works) and it's the reason I bought Vegas myself - but also the reason I sold them - because freesync clearly wasn't working on my monitors with Vega. (though I never had an issue with my Fury X)

I was just reading a Vega 64 watercooled review today in my Computer Power User magazine. (Excellent magazine, and free!)

Thanks

I have a GTX 1070 myself and I'm very happy with its performance, I'd get a GTX 1070Ti instead simplly because right now its cheaper and faster than the Vega56

Newegg ebay has had Vega 56 at $420 for about a week now
