I've been in Micro Center and Tiger Direct a couple times this past month and they have no where near the amount of ATI cards as they do Nvidia. A year ago this time Tiger Direct seemed to be about 50/50 and had just about whatever you needed was in stock (granted, a lot of their in store stock has went down a bit). When I was in Tiger Direct recently they did not have a single 7950 or 7970 in stock and Micro Center had 1.. ONE 7950, an XFX 7950 core edition.

Is there a reason why this is or are they just selling that many more Nvidia cards? Partners? I refuse to believe Nvidia is just that much better.

Nvidia does have a stronger name brand than AMD...

AMD cards are selling out all over the place. Newegg is almost sold out of 7970s having only 3 models in stock, and one of those is the $599 6GB Sapphire OC one.
Why are they selling out? Bitcoin price surge + the amazing game bundle. Sell the game codes + you can mine bitcoins with the cards and in a few months the card will have paid for itself.

I have noticed a few I've had my eye on are selling out. I realize Nvidia is the top name brand but when I go online and read reviews and compare it's very even between the two, at least on forums. Which is why I was a little shocked to see stock so low in store. It could be that Tiger Direct is selling them faster than they can keep them in stock I just didn't think that was the case.

I don't think I know anyone who's actually bought a video card in a physical store. The prices are usually way higher, and the selection is much smaller. I would think AMD doesn't feel the need to waste their time on it.

I disagree but that's because I have a Tiger Direct about 30 minutes away so it is much easier to for me to get it there and take it back there if something is wrong or I don't like it and skip the whole RMA process plus skip the wait on shipping. Also these stores will price match newegg and each other.

I guess I need to reiterate that they do have a decent bit of AMD cards, but mostly low end cards. In TD there was only 1 680 in stock and a couple 670's. I think stock is decreasing but still they had it. Where as Micro Center had a glass case and 90% of it was Nvidia.

Go to BestBuy you won't even find a high end card there. But if you go to their website you'll find them. It's easier for them to sell the lower end cards since the average person only looking for what they can afford. Also it makes no since to stock high end products when they sell lower end quicker and larger quantities.

The Tiger Direct near me opened about 2 years ago and this time last year you could walk in and get just about anything you needed. I guess they've finally figured out the business model, oh well.

but I think AMD has a stronger presence in BestBuy - so its basically dependent on the store

Nvidia have a significantly larger market share so it makes sense that stores would have more of their products in stock.

AMD cards sell faster and restock slower here, the local Fry's carries about 25% more AMD cards variety-wise than Nvidia but they sell quickly, especially the 7950's.

Yep, it's the same everywhere.

BTC being over 100$, plus the games, means you can get the money back in several months, depending on electricity costs. You sell the game codes, and it's even faster.

I didn't take into account Fry's. It's been about a year since I've been in there but it's close to the Micro Center. I may call ahead and see if they have what I'm looking for in stock. I really avoid shipping if I can.

Their website inventory is pretty accurate, if you want to check on there.

NVIDIA has nearly 3/4 of the video card market. It makes sense for retailers to display more of what sells more.

People always bring up Nvidia's market share, but is there really any hard data on that?

It's always been a mystery to me when I see people say it. because I see so much activity and discussion of AMD cards everywhere I look online.

Last sentence is why I made this thread.

It's because Newegg isn't receiving new stock or when they do it's only smaller shipments of the ones going OOS. It's not because the 7970's are selling as well as the GTX 670/680's. ASUS has almost completely stopped manufacturing 7950's and 7970's for whatever reason because most of their models have been out of stock for a couple of months.

Shelf space is limited. They offer what sells better.... period.

More from you? Between Cannondale and your bullshit posts, im amazed that the default colors of this forum haven't changed from red to brown.

That only shows that steam gamers use nVidia.

That survey doesn't include all the Radeon sales used to mine BTC.

So many more pictures out there. Use google image search.
I bet AMD is getting a HUGE market share in the past 2 years that isn't showing up on steam surveys.

I'm going to have some interesting pictures for you guys in about 2 weeks.

i always felt that AMD's 7000 series architecture was defective.

Actual sales data.

There we go. Somebody who doesn't mislead by posting steam survey results.
Thank you.

I believe the type of customers who buy GPUs at B&M stores (best buy) are nVidia fanboys. Couple with the higher profit margins, it makes perfect sense that there's a disproportionate amount of shelf space allocated to nvidia cards.

I could name a few co-workers who think Radeons suck, yet they admit they've never owned one.

Fizz-ick-al?

They still have those?

I call bullshit, I don't believe a word of this conspiracy nonsense!

Physical stores indeed.

Eh, there isn't that large a difference between the "official" numbers and the Steam Hardware Survey numbers. One shows AMD at 36% market share, the other shows AMD at 33% - to me, that's within the margin of error. I'm not so sure there's "a HUGE market share in the past 2 years that isn't showing up on steam surveys." Mining is still a niche activity and few people are willing to put up the money required to set up a farm of 7xxx GPUs. Google Image Search isn't a good metric of market share either. ;)

I wasn't claiming any metrics so don't try to misread my post. I simply stated that there are many Radeon sales that aren't reported in steam surveys and gave an example (mining).

Mining with a video card is dead. You need an ASIC now to make any money at it.

not quite. Perhaps "mining for BTC with a video card is dying because ASICs are growing quickly" is a better statement.
One can still "make money" even mining BTC with video cards. It's just not a lot at $70 / btc.

amd sells out faster due to cheaper prices. its not that they are better, but during rough economic times people always go the cheaper alternative.

I don't even... did you really just conclude that people buying a video card inside of a store must be Nvidia fanboys? I've bought dozens of video cards at the store, the vast majority of them AMD cards. They price match online shops like Amazon and Newegg and I can return shit thats broken with no hassle. If you were a shady character you could even test drive super high end cards and then return them afterwards I suppose. How does where you buy it determine what kind of fanboy you must be?
