Because Dinklages character was totally based on Mitchell all the way down to him cheating

This dude, and by extension this thread, is like reading a quick article from those garbage tabloids near the checkout at the grocery store... and for some reason I love it lol.
That isn't directed at anyone in particular when I say this thread**, but its like a weird guilty pleasure seeing this dude try to stay relevant.
EDIT: what I find funny is in all the speed-running communities I follow, it's really cut and dry what you can and cannot do within the game to consider a run valid (and that can include the hardware used plus the software side of things like glitches and whatnot, both major and minor). Usually self-policed and all that but still.

I just find it so funny that whenever disputes like this come up, the community steps in and settles things, and really that is what it is. (NOW) multiple defamation lawsuits... man, I chuckle.

Would having separate categories (you either run OEM hardware or you don't in this case) and this something you verify before or the run is invalid/goes into another category solve this issue?
Standards go a long way to cutting down on the bs.

But he says he's running on stock hardware and they claim he isn't, when it's a requirement.
Even if they added a category letting him use MAME, he wouldn't admit it, even if he did.

Billy Mitchell may be a giant jerk, but this guy is a retard. Being under an expensive lawsuits against him for a video about him cheating, he again makes a video where his cheating is mentioned. And now has the audacity to beg for money. AlphaQup was right, this is Jerry Springer level drama.
We get it Billy. You don't want any negative pr because it's bad for your "business".

This I do have a bit of a conundrum with. The burden of proof should lie with the accuser, innocent until proven guilty and all that. But at the same time, I thought I read his latest record was achieved on unverified hardware. I could very well be wrong on that last bit, but if no one can verify what you achieved this record on, and YOU are reluctant to let anyone verify... yeah, that does stink a fair amount...
erek , I do personally really enjoy your threads, seriously. Between this thread, a few other obscure news threads you come out with, and your old video card/build threads (ugliest video cards and your Voodoo threads come to mind right away), they're always a hoot.

The problem I have with Karl is that his channel is not primarily about knocking on Mitchell. A big chunk of his fans surely watch his stuff for the other speedrun content as well. It's how I even know about him - on a random speedrunners binge.
However, when the most recent lawsuit started a few months ago, he actively asked for people's financial aid. Thus, his supporters found themselves basically compelled to literally rescue him, even though it wasn't them who decided to call Mitchell out in the first place.
In my opinion, you shouldn't try to throw punches at anyone if you know you might have to call your friends for help because the guy punched back.

Karl covers a lot of cheating within the community. While most of it is speedrun related, he has covered high score cheating outside of Mitchell. Your opinion is literally telling people to never talk about shady things rich people do and just let them keep doing shit with no consequences. While Mitchell lying about a video game is nothing of any real importance outside of the high score space, it's still an example of "small" people punching up at someone richer/more powerful than them. We should ALWAYS call out the rich and powerful when they do shitty things, we should never just lay back and accept it.

IMO it's not about needing rescuing, it's about the absolutely retarded way the US legal system acts. In a sane world there should be someone on the court side of things that sees YET ANOTHER BASELESS LAWSUIT BY BILLY MITCHELL and simply throw out his case, in fact there should be an injunction on him by prohibiting him from filing any further lawsuits of this nature against this person even if there is basis for it. But no instead we have a system where someone can sue another, and it's up to that other person who fork out money for his own defense and it's not necessarily guaranteed that the person will have his attorney fees covered either so if the person suing has deep pockets (or access to a cheap lawyer, e.g. friend or family or one of those lawyers that simply gets a cut of the verdict if they win like injury lawyers do) then there could be a never ending stream of lawsuits to just financially try to break someone... i.e. it's fucking retarded that this bullshit is allowed to happen like this. Now if he is lucky enough to get his attorney fees covered, then he could totally give the money back to those who gave it to him or stuff it in an account for the next time he's sued by Mitchell in which case you then don't have to ask for help for legal fees.
Karl is a guy who essentially reports on video game records whether speedruns or high scores, he was reporting on a story of a guy who potentially cheated, I don't see it as "throwing punches" any more than putting out a report of a corrupt politician or the like. People of power and wealth should NOT be able to sue others just to shut them up, and it's kind of deplorable to even suggest that you should stay quiet if you're afraid of being sued.
Mitchell probably hasn't had much if any financial hit due to any potential libel or slander (not sure if articles were written about it) so these lawsuits should be thrown out of the courts immediately without any trial or hit to people who made said comments, but again... retarded US legal system.

You declare someone a vexatious litigant; generally they are required to ask for permission to file lawsuits after that.
The problem is you basically have to be the Speedway Bomber or the Prenda Law guys to have this happen to you.

Nobody is compelled to give money, it's entirely voluntary. You act as if he is demanding money from followers at gunpoint. It's up the viewers to decide whether they think it is a worthy cause or not. There is nothing wrong with this.

Yeah, don't cause problems by calling out liars, cheats, and crooks, let them scam people as their heart pleases.

Sorry, but a lot of those arguments are just strawmen. No gun-pointing was implied. It's how I felt, actually. I would feel bad if Karl got ruined by that guy, possibly for a good chunk of his life. If you expect help from your audience, it becomes a crusade and Youtube is not a good venue to do that.

It becomes an endless pit of bail-out money that supporters have to shell out to be able to see their content creator actually delivering content.
I really like some of the people I watch and I've seen big things done in a better way, like the farmer from Goldshaw farms lobbying against live chicks in deplorable conditions at Tractor Supply IIRC. Thing is, Youtube was merely a way to document what he was actually doing in real life.
Again, there are ways to do this, Youtube isn't that.
As for the US justice system - I can't speak to that. It sounds wrong to use it like Mitchell uses it.

I think it's an issue of priorities. I genuinely don't think anyone cares if Billy cheated or not. I don't see him as some super powerful or rich figure and that this all about "punching up". In fact, it sounds downright silly when put that way. I'm confident Billy is capable of achieving whatever he was purported to have cheated. What they accused of him of doing sounds impressively ballsy and elaborate for an old arcade game.
There is little doubt that he cheated, especially now that there are pictures of the machine he (very likely) used to get one or both of the scores in question. Even if the DK board in the machine is legit (which is questionable) the fact that the cab itself is modified means his scores are disqualified and him lying about the machine being unmodified means he would be banned anyway. Whether or not he could get those scores legit is entirely irrelevant at this point.
As for it seeming ballsy and elaborate for an old game? Not really. People cheat and lie about the dumbest shit all the time. Look at how rampant cheating is in the speed run community or with online video games in general.
And, yes, in this context Mitchell is more rich and powerful than the people he is suing. In the grand scheme of things, he's a nobody, but he still has the money to be able to bully and attempt to silence those with less than him. It is still punching up, even if it's a much smaller scale we're talking about here.
