Apple’s AR Headset Was Seemingly Tried Out By Oculus Founder

Omar Sohail
The Apple AR headset could be the company’s most polarizing product to date, but to the founder of Oculus, the mixed-reality head-mounted wearable has apparently put an excellent first impression, if his tweet is anything to go by. However, one individual’s positive feedback is not going to do any wonders for the success of this device because, as it stands, Apple has to sell a ton of these.

Sounds nice, looks nice, and probably IS nice, but @$3-4k, it's gonna go nowhere real fast, especially considering the rumor of a lower priced (but gimped as usual) version forthcoming, except to fruity-boi diehards and some other fools with moar $$ than brains :D

Apple is apparently well aware that this first gen will have a limited audience. And I don't think the more mainstream version will be "gimped" as in being neutered; it's more that the initial version will be overkill.

Just needs to compete with other professional AR devices like HoloLens which costs a lot more than 4k. Professional ones are used in design, engineering, and medical fields as well as a number of military applications. I would love a sub $1000 consumer version but it would be a gimmick at best.

All still a bunch of virtual boys, never gonna work

Let me know when in comes in contact lenses or PlayStation 9

Perhaps but they always remove alot of features from the lower-priced models, so not really "gimped" per se, but still missing things that alot of people want, in favor of a lower price...

I'm well aware of the pro devices out there & have even used some of them. However, that's a way different market segment from the consumer/retail one, and most "average joe" consumer aint gonna/can't afford to pony up $3-4K for these... regardless of how nice or cool it may be :)

I'm waitin for the neural net-implant version, then perhaps my medical insurance will pay for it (or at least part of it), hehehe :)

Yeah as beautiful as the studio displays are I only have 2 people who need them, and everyone else gets a Dell, which is still a good display. But it’s $700 and not $3000. Give me a $600 AR and I’d get one to see what it’s all about and try to work it in, but anything more than that and unless I have a specific use case that requires it then it’s just another pretty thing somebody makes for somebody else.

Apple Registers 'xrOS' Wordmark Ahead of WWDC Headset Unveiling (macrumors.com)4

Apple has registered a wordmark for "xrOS" in New Zealand, the first time the company has indirectly revealed both the name of the operating system for its upcoming headset and the official font and styling that accompanies it. From a report:Spotted by Parker Ortolani, the xrOS wordmark registered with the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office shows that Apple will use its San Francisco typeface in xrOS marketing, just as it does for macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. "xrOS" is meant to stand for "extended reality." Extended reality represents both the augmented and virtual reality functions the headset will support. The name was already confirmed by internal Apple sources last year via Bloomberg, and Apple has also been trademarking xrOS in several countries through a hidden shell company.
