Apple Let Suppliers Reduce Face ID Accuracy to Speed Up Production

According to Bloomberg, (WARNING auto play video) Apple had to allow their suppliers to reduce the accuracy of the Face ID system in the iPhone X so they could speed production and have some stock for their November 3 launch date. Supposedly the dot projector that projects 30K dots onto the face is the component that is hard to produce and this is why Apple relaxed some of the specifications for Face ID. Don't worry though, Face ID is still more secure than Touch ID according to Apple.

Despite demanding the near impossible, Apple didn’t add extra time to get it right—giving suppliers the typical two-year lead time. The tight schedule underestimated the complexity of making and assembling exceedingly fragile components, said one of the people familiar with the production process.

Answer to your question is Apple. Now w/t fingerprint you have to look at the damn phone to unlock it. What a great idea, will probably go well with all the touch screen stuff inside a Tesla car. lol
 
Heck I just got a new phone after 4 years and the fingerprint thing is amazing. Has me thinking they want to have the "latest and greatest" since fingerprint tech is showing up on other phones.
 
So they can't believe what they promised so they giving you the inferior version? This being Apple I wouldn't be surprised if they upped the price of the phone by another $100.

It's selectivity was decent if you used just one finger, but decreased with enrolling multiple fingers. It was sensitive to skin oils building up, sensitive to sweat and moisture, and doesn't work with gloves.

FaceID improves upon all of that and permits apple to removie the button and giant borders everyone has griped about for years.

FaceID imrpoved on a number of things users said they didn't like. I'm not sure why people have a hard time accepting such.
 
Put the finger ID on the back of the phone like other manufacturers do.

I'm sure FaceID will be super accurate with people wearing winter hats and sunglasses. Also likely will have problems if your sensors are dirty or wet, or someone is wearing a lot of makeup, or wet from rain or the pool. So it's really no better than a fingerprint on that account.

I've never heard anyone griping about the button on their phone. Ever.
 
In the winter people wear scarves or other items covering their face in colder climates. A whole ton of women in the middle east who have their faces covered all the time in public. And, the obvious one as mentioned that you have to point it at your face. Currently with my fingerprint on my Nexus 5x I can slip it out of my pocket and it is unlocked before it leaves my pocket. A quick glance at something can be done without ever raising it above my hip.

All face unlock is doing is trading one set of issues for another. It isn't an all positive change. Apple is doing it because they wanted to get rid of the front button and didn't want to put it on the back like most everyone else. Can't be innovative if you copy another person's good idea. You have to invent your own hair-brained idea and force that out the door.

Same thing that's wrong with touch ID. Biometrics are unchangeable and tied to you for life. They also aren't protected by the same rights as a pin/password, and either can be used to unlock your phone when you're unconscious.

God I’m sick of this 5S already lol. Did make good money off my 2 IPhone 6S though lol.
 
Your average Apple user will not see information like this, so out of sight, out of mind.
(Accuracy being out of sight with the new technology that is)

After using a phone with it on the back, there isn't a more intuitive, easier to use spot that I can imagine. I'm surprised you're so upset at the prospect, logically if you think about it a little, it's a great spot.

What exactly was wrong with unlock pattern or pin code ?

All this complaining is premature. You're going to look at your phone anyway, so why not streamline it with the face ID ?

You might look at your phone, but are you going to look at it at a sufficient angle to activate Face ID? I regularly slip my phone out of my pocket and swipe into my email to check something. All without raising it above my hip. If I had to use an iPhone with only face ID I couldn't do that because it wouldn't unlock. It forces you to be much more conspicuous about your phone use. Also, my phone, with the fingerprint sensor on the back, is unlocked before it leaves my pocket because my finger is on the sensor the second I touch it.

We do not know that yet, it may unlock just as easily without having to lift it. We will find out very soon

Yeah? How about when its on a dashboard mount? Or you are holding it at the bottom

Hasn't been an issue on my 6P and I use a dashboard mount; the scanner is still above the mount and I can access it as easily with my middle finger as I could a front scanner with my thumb or index finger. But it's a non-issue anyways since my car's BT is a trusted device so my phone doesn't lock while connected to it (I assume iOS can do the same thing, but don't know). I don't know what you mean about holding your phone at the bottom.. any way I hold my phone I can reach the rear scanner with any of my fingers pretty comfortably and effortlessly.
 
So face id will open to most people now?

I hear the iPhone xi Will just have a owner lick it to unlock.

here's what i know based on video demos. It scans your face from all obtuse angles when you set up faceID, so you could give it sideeye and it would still unlock i presume.

Honestly, you shouldn't be using your face or your finger to unlock your phone. Use it for apps after you've unlocked it (maybe), but never use it to unlock a device. Police can force you to apply a finger or take a picture of your face. They can't force you to enter your phone password (so far).

Or, you could avoid doing anything on your phone that you don't want the cops to see...Or maybe not do illegal things at all.

At least with a finger, you can accidentally use the wrong one and after a few tries your phone reverts to a pin which you don't remember. Tougher to do with your face.

Android does it.

Apple has long had a need to be "first" at things (conveniently ignoring things that predated them, like Windows 10's face recog) and to differentiate themselves for everyone else.

OK, if you think the Police are on your side when they ask to search your phone or house, then go for it. I'm going to keep my shit private and if they want to see it, I'll contact an attorney first, because the Police are NOT your friend in those types of situations.

I just don't use bio-metrics to unlock my phone. Unless the courts agree the 4th amendment includes biometrics, I'll enter a code. It doesn't take that long. That said, I guess the latest IOS allows you to revert to a pass code from a locked screen, so that'd essentially cover me if I get pulled over on the highway, but I'm still sticking with a passcode.

I mean it is apparently more secure than a finger print and it'll work with people who dont' have easily read finger prints (I know some old folks that can't get the finger print reader to work consistently.

I have to disagree. I have a Note 8, and I have to pick up the phone, press the bottom of the screen, then stretch my finger up far enough to completely cover the sensor at just the right angle, and even then it still tells me "match not found" or "make sure you cover the entire sensor" 3 out of 5 times. Maybe I'm just too ignorant to get it right, but my 7+ with the sensor in the home button felt much more natural since I was pushing the home button anyway to wake up my phone, and it worked 90% of the time on the first try.

As for face ID, I think it's a neat concept, but it's still a very immature technology (hats, scarves, sleeping, unconsciousness etc can mess it up). Getting rid of TouchID was a little far-sighted. Maybe they could have given us the option to use both to even more security. p

I'll be honest, the note 8 finger print sensor does look like it's in a bad spot.
Also, using it doesn't automatically unlock the phone??

My phone has a generous finger print sensor in the middle of the back, which unlocks the phone when used.
I honestly believe this should be the defacto standard for phones.

If someone is going to chop off your finger, then phone security is not an issue anymore. Hold the person hostage, torture, extortion, etc.

The issue with face id is that it's more work than a finger print scanner, and I'm really hoping it doesn't require certain view angles of your face to work regularly.
