Surely this isn't going to hold in court. Otherwise Apple will be free to sue anyone for anything from alarm clocks to monitors, just about any electronic devices with round edges.:confused:
 
If anyone bothered to read the patent the claim is:
"The ornamental design for a portable display device, as shown and described."

Thus they have only patented the round rectangle for portable devices where the display is one of the primary features ie tablet (but perhaps not a phone).

Which makes me wonder about this:

That photo is from 2006, iPad came out in 2010. I don't think this patent will hold up.

If I had spare money sitting around and some patent lawyers as friends I would see if I can get it revoked.

Actually just had a look at the cited references in the patent, the laywers looked at that Wikipedia image but decided it did not apply...

Maybe the specific feature is that the top surface is flat, ie it is a hard edge rather than a more rounded edge like the HP tablet?
 
What about the Windows tablet in 2000 then??? It is dumb no matter how you slice it. So if kindle was round edge they would be screwed.. Apple you are fucking retarded. I hate you and the people you converted.

Can anyone tell me how this is even enforceable? I'm pretty darn sure that EVERY notebook, tablet, cell phone in existence falls into the rounded corner rectangle. I have a hard time believing any judge, ever, upholding this...even if it gets to trial.

This is nothing new, like everyone has been pointing out. Shouldn't this fall into a common use deal?

I have a computer monitor from the 1980s with rounded corners. Apple is going to be pissed when they find out.

This is the same shit Apple has always done. The only difference is the time period and level of corruption in the government. In the 80's and 90's people didn't stand for this shit and it drove them out of the market. Their closed market strategy and complete control they seek is actually paying off this time around. They are losing market share, yet they see their stock prices soar, and to maintain control this time around they are filing lawsuits against their competition.

Well I'm sure one of the judges on Apple's payroll with decide that the prior art shown is totally different and non admissible and can not be used in any court case on the grounds that it hurts Apple's case.
 
Here is an idea to make the Patent system more effective.
Would it be easier to assume going forward that every ideas come from Apple unless proven otherwise?
The Patent Office would only validate cases for which proposed patents are not from Apple.
