By the time drivers aren't specifically developed for an architecture, all the available performance has already been squeezed out of it and the notion that newer drivers degrade performance has been debunked many times over. Game-Ready drivers apply to all supported cards.

It’s likely that driver optimization is mostly replacing game shaders with a faster AMD/Nvidia specific one that “hopefully” produces the same result. The general purpose optimizations probably happen very early in the life of each architecture with everything else being game specific.

At some point they will stop doing the game specific stuff for older hardware. Hard to tell if that’s already happened for Pascal/Polaris/Vega.

nah they still happen but a lot of times it's not avertised because they want people to upgrade.. e.g. AMD constantly says X fix for 5700 series but the fix actually effects vega/palaris as well but it's never mentioned. or X performance improvement for the 5700 series in some game but palaris and vega also see a boost in performance in the same game but it's never mentioned. nvidia does the same thing til they eol a card series in their drivers after about 4-5 years.
 
Assuming it's a relatively quiet aftermarket 5700XT I would take that over the 1080 Ti. It's faster in newer (low level api) games and uses a bit less power.
 
I own both

They're effectively equivalent, but the 1080ti overclocks better.

I had more issues with the 5700xt driver wise the first couple of months, but they've all been fixed by now.

I havent tried the 5700xt in VR yet.

On my 2080 Ti NVLink setup, I don't notice any microstutter in any games that support SLI. It was different than the 1080 Ti SLI set I had, which had horrendous microstutter.
 
Also, slightly off-topic, but since we were speaking of SLI, it looks like Nvidia may actually be trying to get mGPU running again...

 
I'd take the 1080 Ti over the 5700XT in a heartbeat. More VRAM, PhysX support and great performance in the games I play.

It’s a BS technology that has been superseded by software physics models long ago. That’s why it’s not used any longer. Wavy cloth isn’t hard to do.

It was the overdone explosions that interacted that I liked.

I think hair was a part of it too, but they would degrade it so bad for game release the hair would look like garbage, since they ran that on the CPU.

CPU Physx is widely used.
 
GPU-accelerated PhysX in Arkham Knight was amazing... Until Rocksteady toned the effects down due to the complaints of performance. It was nice while it lasted, I guess.

As to the OP, I'll take the 5700XT because I haven't played with an AMD video card in over 10 years and I still have a Titan X, a fully enabled 1080 Ti, as a backup card.
 
I'd take the 5700XT since its the newer card and likely to be better supported the next few years.

There’s decent cloth simulation on CPUs these days but fluids are still non-existent.
 
if both are ref models, i'd turn the offer down.

if 1080ti was watercooled, and 5700xt was just non-ref decent cooling - i'd take 1080ti | if both cooling were non-ref and similar in performance i'd take 5700xt anytime of a day.
 
Have an RTX 2080 Super so the 5700XT as long as it works. My last one did not and so I went with the 2080 Super. I really wanted the 5700XT to work so I could say I had a PCIe 4.0 card that went with my X570 board.

1080 Ti fo sho for g-sync and still better resale, performance, and VRAM.

Well you are talking to a person with a 3900x and 2080 super that only plays games once in a while and mostly uses the system to surf the web. So I bought the card to have something new and give AMD a shot again. And I just went from a B450 MB to an X570 MB and figured why not try this new card that is the only PCIe 4 one out right now.

Sadly I could not even get the drivers to install and tried for two days. Heck even reset my BIOS to defaults just in case there was a setting that was screwing it up. Drivers would just lock the system and reboot it after a while. Never ever installing. Ran every file cleaning trick I could think of to make sure it was not some NVidia drivers left over. The fans on the card were spinning like crazy and finally I pulled it out and returned it. Got the RTX 2080 Super instead.

I feel for AMD, being as they are, the underdog. So it always makes sense to try to undercut the competition by driving/leading open standards, hoping to undercut by simply "being first".

But, as Steve Jobs pointed out, being first is irrelevant: you have to be the first thing that actually COUNTS.

Luckily, for AMD, their CPUs are certainly doing exactly that right now.


p.s. Forget Intel in terms of driving GPU prices down, the other way around Intel would like...

p.p.s Intel won't open with a 'value' discreet GPU, I practically guarantee it. No one at Intel gives an actual fuck about enthusiast desktop graphics, most notably Raja...

I really did want it to work. I was actually so irritated that I could not get it to work. I know it was most likely just a bad card and I got unlucky but I was not willing to try another one. Considering on a whim I just decided to go all out and update a system I just built in February to the 3900x when I saw BestBuy had them in stock. Then came an update to the X570 board to replace the B450 I just bought, then of course faster RAM going from 3200 to 3600 and then clocking to 3800. New Power Supply that I really did not need. Then a new case, I mean I needed to put all the old stuff I replaced somewhere right. So I needed a video card. Now I have a system built and literally sitting in a box, the box the new case came in. All it needs is a hard drive. What can I say, being single with a good job and no kids the money has to go somewhere. :)
 
They are pretty close in performance, really, so I would go with the newer 5700xt. My last Radeon was a 9800 pro, great card, AMD finally has a card compelling enough to try.
 
5700XT hands down. I love the new radeon overlay and software control. Its a strange new world where AMD upped its driver and software game.
 
I'm going with the 1080ti, its a proven card and does great in gaming still. I will be moving back to a 1080ti once I off load my current card
 
If I was getting a card specifically just for gaming, the 1080Ti wins hands down.
But I also am doing video encoding in macOS and I need macOS compatibility for compute workloads. So personally I'd probably end up with a Nitro+ 5700xt in that case (for clarity, the card I currently use is a Radeon VII, which is better still for my purposes).

Still the 1080Ti I would say makes way more sense for 90-95% of people on this forum over the 5700xt.

It’s unquestionable that most people here are using their cards for gaming. Casually look through the last 2 pages and let me know how many pick the 5700xt. The poll essentially has already made itself.
