I remember way back when at the start of UFC pay-per-views, right after the Federal Piracy Warning, that Joe Rogan used to say, "You can't stop the internet." It does seem that the UFC stopped him from continuing to say that however at the top of every show. However, it does seem that he was somewhat correct in his statement. The numbers mentioned here for pirate boxes in Hong Kong are staggering, but I think what is more surprising is how many people have flatly stated that they have dropped all legitimate sources of paid entertainment for their pirate "Kodi boxes."

From the outset, CAP has had the stated aim of tackling the pirate set-top box market. CAP General Manager Neil described their prevalence as “staggering” and a new report published this morning appears to back that up. The newly released survey, commissioned by CAP and carried out by YouGov, reveals that one in four Hong Kong consumers own a set-top box that can be used to stream pirated TV and movies content. Of the quarter of all consumers who own a piracy-enabled set-top box, almost half (49%) told the survey that they had canceled all or some of their subscriptions to legal pay-TV services as a result.

And how many own one that don't admit to it in a survey?

Flip side, how one side was the survey? If it was being done by the anti-piracy group, they have all reasons to skew the numbers in the way they word the questions.

For example, it could be the difference between asking:

"Do you own such and such [Kodi] box?" (Even though those boxes have legitimate uses), followed by "are you a current TV subscriber or have you cancelled any service in the last X months?"

Versus:

"Do you own a [Kodi] such and such box? If so, have you ever used it to watch content that you did not pay for?" followed by "Did the ease of the content on the box cause you to cancel any TV services in the last X months?"

The former question group skews the data to "they're all pirates because of the kodi boxes." Just because people own box A and cancel TV service B does not mean they're correlated, it could be that your content is just shit on both and they would have cancelled anyways.

It's the difference between research being done to test a hypothesis for the sake of knowledge and research being done to get a specific answer for an interest group (e.g. they're funding it).

Agreed. But I think if someone bought a box capable of watching pirated content and then cancelled all of their paid-for services, I think we can assume they are pirates. They didn't provide numbers on that, but it's less than 12%, which doesn't sound so alarming.

I guess my Sony 43" 4k HDR is a pirate box. I went to the play store app and downloaded kodi right from the tv. I then installed Twitch app thru kodi.
I also play Blackwake on the Pirates side of course:)

According to that picture these boxes go for $325? Not sure how much TV cost in Hong Kong but here that box paid it self off in 4 months with something like Comcast. Way back when I had Dave TV before the swapped out the customer card with one with a bit more security I used to love to reprogram my own, watch PPV galore even shitty movies just because I could, then wipe it clean. These days though I don't have time to watch TV for any length of time, sure I use the computer a lot but that's the 21st century equivalent of "reading the newspaper" and that's my primary source of entertainment/news/etc.
